I really would like to try Vanguard but my comp won't really run it. I get really bad stutters and I am unable to play. Here are my specs. Windows xp, pentium(r) 4cpu 2.60ghz 2.59ghz, 1.25 gb of ram. my video card is nvidea fx 5200. what i really want to ask is if i will be able to just update my video card and make this game playable? if so, to what card? i am really poor and don't know much about comps. anyway, thanks for the advice in advance.

The first thing I would recommend is that you be sure that you want to spend the time and money to upgrade your computer. It's not going to be particularly cheap (especially given Vanguard's steep system requirements) and if you don't end up liking Vanguard, you'll want to be sure that your upgrades are applicable to other games so that you aren't just throwing away money.
Looking at your system specs, I think your best option is to upgrade your RAM to something between 2-4 GB (If possible) and upgrade your graphics card to something with 512MB of RAM. If you go to Vanguard's website, you should be able to find a list of supported or recommended graphics cards. Usually something made by NVIDIA is what you want.
As a side note, if you really like computer games, you might want to start learning about computers and how to judge between a multi-purpose computer to ones that are built around gaming. It will be worth your time in the future.
Well, depends on how much eye candy you like.
I have one friend that was planning to upgrade but didn't because he was OK with the way Vanguard ran on maximum performance. He has 1 gig ram, 2.2 ghz processor and think the same video card you have. Personally, I've seen him play and maximum performance is an awfully bland world.
If you want to get it up to balanced settings, which look pretty darn good, you'll need 2 gig of ram and at least a 7800 GS (dunno about the ATI equivalent).
If you want high qualify (which I run on) you'll get looking at a significant upgrade on your video card, 2 gig of ram and a better processor too.
Definately going to need a new graphics card, I run it on a 7950 GT with 512mb. Rough price estimate: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814143071
Adding RAM so your computer is at atleast 2Gig of RAM is important also.
There's also smaller things you can do for upgrade computer performance depending on what your system is running in the background. Try doing searches for 'computer performance optimization' etc. and you may be surprised that little things like that help. My guess is that until you add a more modern card and upgrade to 2Gig RAM you won't see very many improvements with performance in running Vanguard.
thanks for all the advice. i will start by getting a new video card, i think. if i can play it on low to low/medium settings i think that will suffice. i have played almost every mmorpg and im sick of them all so i guess it's time to upgrade for 3rd gen or get a new comp . is my processor that bad? will it be able to run the games of the future if i get more ram and a good card?
Sorry to inform you :
* V:SoH is NOT 3rd gen. It is not even a very good 2nd gen game.
* There is NO computer you can buy today that will run V:SoH on even medium qualitiy settings at consistent good frame-rate.
* Even on a $5000 system, on Highest Performance, you will still run into sub-15 fps rates at the most inoportune times (like when other characters are around, or you are in a town).
* The game is in a horrible state. Think Anarchy-Online at release with a *slightly* higher framerate. CDT bugs, Rollback bugs, Inventory bugs, Quest bugs, all abound. It is a mess.
* It is being worked on, but that is really not a good thing. V:SoH is a good six months to a year from being ready for Release. What you will be paying $50 + $15mo is the chance to Beta the game for the next 6 to 12 months. Do you really want to do that?
I really recommend that you find a different game to play; LotRO maybe. At least until the work is complete on V:SoH. Then get a trial (there will be plenty), and try it out. For now, trying to fix V:SoH with Hardware is just not possible.
Good Luck
Note to the OP: If you haven't posted here before you may be unaware of this board's troll problem. Shoal is a troll who flings out inflammatory remarkds to steer people away from trying the game for themselves.
To put it into perspective, I have a 3 year old Alienware that has a Geforce 8800 GTX card as it's only upgrade (albeit a big GPU upgrade). I run on Balanced with additional options turned up and on such as all the dynamic lighting effects (e.g. bloom) that don't seem to degrade my performance at all. This is where I've settled to find the best combo of graphics and fps. In open areas I get 80-90 fps. In Leth Nurae, which has become a crowded city I get 25-30 fps. And know this, Balance turns ALOT of nice options on and/or up and is two notches above Highest Performance. As patches continue, the fps has been creeping up as well.
You've got nothing to lose to try the game out for yourself on a free trial.
Well, figure it this way..... friend of mine who loves VG decided to build his own PC to play it.... using these components purchased from NewEgg: (around $2042)

It seems like he built a decent system, right? Well, he can't run at Max video...he runs one notch below it to maintain about a 30 fps average.... which depressed him since he thought he had a system that was strong enough...

$1900 (us) at tigar direct after rebates. I play and never get under 20fps , most of the time I am at 80-110fps.

I am playing VG on a midgrade system and it's doing fair. It's definitely not good, but it's pretty decent. I've decided to sacrifice the pretty graphics so I could play this game I've been waiting on for so long. I would suggest the 2gigs of RAM first of all. Also, see the sticky on these forums about optimizing your VGclient.ini files. This helps a lot. And don't forget to defrag and shut down any background programs you may have running.
I play on highest performance with my clip plane turned all the way down in cities or laggy areas, and turn it back up in the open. Yes, I know, the graphics will suck, but graphics don't make the game unplayable. I use a Celeron D processor at 2.8Ghz, 2 gigs of RAM, and an Nvidia 5500 512mb overclocked. It's an old card, and I need to upgrade, but the game is playbale. The graphics aren't pretty, but I grouped successfully last night in a mob infested Ksaravi bunker and had no issues.
Try that, and see if you can play the game. It won't be pretty, but it will be playable, and you can still have fun. Hope that helps.
I'm not a video card expert, but I think the main difference between brand is warranty, tech support and free T-shirt or no free T-shirt. I looked at 3-4 different brands when purchasing my card.... eVGA, BFG couple of others too. Ultimately I chose BFG for the warranty. But in the end, I think the chipsets are identical and the only performance difference is whether a manufacturer over-clocks the card or not.

Actually, not true. My 'negative' posts are pretty much targeted to V:SoH, now that DDO has been proven to be a dog and everyone knows it. Do your research. My post previous to this one was to say the EVE was a fantastic game and was not going to die, even though I don't like it or play it.
To the OP. You can deny all you want. But you asked what system would run V:SoH. And the answer is that no system will run it well, all the time. The Vanboiz, of which I assume you are about to join (temp, I am sure), will continue to post their lies about V:SoH. I like to 'Troll' the truth about this PoS game.
So, live with it, for now.

How about this, my PC specs are:AMD 64 3000+ (mediocre)
2gig PC3200 RAM no brand (Good)
Nvidia 7950GX2 (Great)
WD 350gig SATA II (Good)
As you can see my CPU is biggest bottleneck, and yet I still CAN get up to 20-30 FPS in the wilderness on maximum settings at 1280x1024 resolution. Granted, i have to turn graphics down when I enter the city, but its not at all that bad in the wilderness. Buildings and PCs seem to cause most lag (I lag in dungeons when 20+ people run around me).
While this is not what a perfectly polished game should look like, it is definitely not enough to completely throw down anyone who likes the gameplay. Yes you get bad FPS, and yes its not that bad to throw the game away just for that reason alone.

If you want to upgrade then just don't do it for vanguard do it for the future dx10 games.
You can take the cheap route and get a lite version of x1900 card and run it much better or go the full monty and prepare for dx10
This might require a full build .Yes even new memory and possibly motherboard if yours is not 775 and can handle ddr2 ram.
A affordable build for the future is
intel 6300
2gb DDR2 667mhz(the 800mhz are too expensive and really more for OC fans)
320mb 8800gts(if you can afford to spent an extra $40 or so get the XT version from XFX because its pre oc with a warranty to gtx speed)
Intel 6300 core2 duo (plenty of overclock potential)
Geforce 7600 GT
1 Gb Ram or Greater
Budget Upgrade choice. Will run the game nicely and save you a few pennies
