What Two Aspects of an MMO Keep You P(l)aying?

I was trying to decide what I'm really looking for in a game.  I read the thread that another poster made asking what games he and his wife should try (I wish my spouse played...) based on a certain set of criteria.  He received a good number of responses, with a few different games cited.  But his question, and my inner search for a reason to play, lead me to ask these questions:  What two aspects of an MMO keep you playing (and subsequently paying)?  What one or two games cover those aspects the best?  What could each game do to improve the aspects you listed?

What two aspects of an MMO keep you playing (and paying):

- Weapon/Armor Art & Exploration

What one or two games covers those aspects the best?

- Weapon/Armor Art: V:SoH

- Exploration: WoW (I found the way to the Dwarven Airbase all by myself)

What could each game do to improve the aspects?

- Weapon/Armor Art: V:SoH: Increase the amount of Art included for weapons and armor and make each item different (right now some weapons share the graphics with other weapons).

- Exploration: WoW: Include not only interesting hidden locations, but also bonus' to finding the locations.  Like when SWG first came out and no one was sure on how to get a Jedi Account, people were wandering all over looking for secret areas and ways to advance to Jedi (there were a lot of ruins scattered throughout - these could have been part of the overall process).  Make things like exploration experimentation, etc (instead of needing to grind) give you special abilities, upgrades, weapon/armors, etc.  Make another reason for people to explore (aside from a player's satisfaction at finding that "cool" area first.

Maybe your answer will help another player looking for some reason to play, choose a game they wouldn't normally have chosen.

1-Character customization. If i don't like the way I look, and/or am a clone, I won't play it very long.

    2-Exploration.

What one or two games covers those aspects the best?

    Secondlife.

    Somehow make it not laggy;p

    1. Character Customization

    2. Frequent Rewards

In my opinion, the CoX series has done THE BEST hands down when it comes to the customization of characters. I created multiple different heroes/villains and none of them looked the same, nor did I see anyone else that looked the same as any of my toons. One game that I'm hoping can match the character customization is Chronicles of Spellborn. I was actually impressed with Everquest 2's ability to customize the character, because I went in there thinking it wouldn't even compare to CoX. I take into consideration a lot of gear based MMO's, because as time goes on the gamer will gather more armor and equipment to create a look for the character, making it somewhat unique. However, games like WoW I'll see someone around my same level with the same equipment. When it comes to these types of games, the key isn't exactly adding more customization in the character creation phase, but just plain ol' having more equipment and gear. Just my opinion though.

Rewards? Yeah, I'm someone that can be described as an "instant gratification" gamer. I want something new and exciting QUICK , or else I'm not going to be happy with going on. Whether it is new abilities, new armor, a fun new quest, or the ability to get into a new zone, I want to be able to have something new on the table in a relatively short amount of time. What game did the best? I don't really think I have one. That is why I'm stuck in a rut right now with NO MMO to play right now. WoW did a decent job of taking away the grind, but if I have to do one more fucking quest to get 12 owl feathers I'll kill someone. No more WoW for me.

    1. Art style

    2. End game content

For art style, this would include the overall look of the game but my main focus would be on the character and his or her armor and weapons. As for end game content, I look for stuff like Raids that are actually fun and rewarding as well as good PvP systems. Without end game content, there is really no point in playing MMORPGs.

If I could choose a third option, I would say something like Frequent Rewards as thaak did, which sort of contradicts my second choice. But without frequent rewards, most people wouldn't have the patience or desire to even reach end game content.

So anyways, my choice for both of these would be WoW. CoH/V is a pretty good one too, but there is no end game content beside the incredibly boring Hami raids and lackluster pvp. I'm very interested in what WAR and AoC will offer though.

    1. leveling fast /  being the "best" for that sense of accomplishment (albeit false one :D).

1.5. Playing with my S/O and crushing others in PVP. (teehee).

    2. Boredom / a place to talk to people and be friendly as I don't have a lot of people to talk to where I live.

    Sorry more than 2

WOW for the longest time, though now I am bored with it, been there done that really tired of people in the game only out for themselves in the end game. Yea I know I said I like being the best, but I don't step on people to get there, and loot isn't important to me as I know I'll eventually get it.

I don't mind being given advice, but so many people in WOW think they are superior if you make one little mistake, or do something different then they think you should. I hate the elitist attitude that WOW breeds.

LOTRO now because it's fun like WOW but new and a lot friendlier.

What could each game do to improve the aspects you listed?

LOTRO could use more diversity in character customization.

    1. Community. I don't care if you don't consider this an aspect. I have to deal with morons all day and I don't want to deal with them when I try to play a game to have fun. Granted, almost every game out there has a bad community, but some are worse then others.

    2. Customization. Be it character, item, housing...anything. I want a way to stand out and be different, I don't want to look exactly like the next person or have the same exact items as them. As long as the game as some type of customization, I'll more then likely play it. If not, it would take a lot to keep me playing the game.

Only game that has anything close to this is CoX.

um, i occasionally play wow, because the wife refuses to play anything else.

i play eve, because i can buy timecards with isk.

i play project entropia because it doesn't FORCE me to pay any money.

    ditto ao.

might try shadowbane again and keep an account there if they still have the free to play type thing.

other than that, when a new expansion/patch comes out, i MIGHT try a game again.

but, for the most part, they're just boring.  and there's some games, that are REAL good games, but the players just are assclowns to the nth degree.  i can only be nice to psychos for so long.

could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?

    1. Content: And by content I include community. Some games are fun to play (or play solo) but the group and community dynamics makes it very lonely due to the multitude of ego trips, childish and flat-out mean behavoir.

    2. Exploration: Which is also tied to content in many ways. Take EVE...A very good game with perhaps a little to much exploration while the game is getting dated (until new update) it's community, story, and exploration make it a excellent game, not for everyone but a good game.

Witty saying to amuse you goes here.
