Well i jumped into Guild wars and made my first character a Elementalist/Warrior, and promptly died to the pack of raving Gargoyles due to lack of controls and skills. My fault since i had read nothing, not even the skill hover popups beforehand. My first take was it was way too shallow of a game, since i jumped from solo mission the the undead crypt, promptly died, and played that little "undead arena game of kill the other parties for no apparent reason at all" But making a new char gave me a much better feel.
Well next i jumped into game with a Warrior/Elementalist to learn the ropes, it is so much easier to learn games by playing a Warrior type to begin with. Well running out into battle i began to explore the starting solo area, and got the general feel of the controls. Overall they arent that bad. Playing around with attributes(IIRC) i found i could cash them all in to choose other ones, unfortunately this isnt infinate since after you cash em all in and spend them again a few times they lock for good. Messing up my warrior pretty good in the process i moved on to my "final" character.
Ashes To Ashes is my Elementalist/Warrior whom i love dearly, if only she could find better looking gear! LOL, anyway, i must say being a mage who can take a few hits is nice to see in a game, my favorite technique is to pull enemies over with Flare, and then launch Inferno, Fireball, and Firestorm into the mass of them healing inbetween. I maxed out my Fire Magic skill to 20, got Energy Regen(IIRC) to 11, and then the rest into Swordsmanship and Melee Def (like 1-3 skill each) Im running around with a sword and shield for the look and Def of the shield, if Def even matter atm.
Overall i must say it is rather enjoyable, and seems like it will be fast paced in retail when it comes in half a year, the skill system is very random and reminds me of "Sacred" but aside from a skill tree which i would much rather have, its a fun game. Im unsure if the free healing will be in retail or if its to help out in Alpha, but it does seem a little too easy to heal - thou it isnt a bad call and saves on healing potions since money is a bit scarce unless you sell Gems. It also makes downtime almost nonexistant which is a very nice bonus.

Good write up.
I also think this game shows much promise. Witha game like this it will be an MMO for those that want to get in, kick some butt and then attend to real life duties.
Well since the above post ive managed to get thru a few missions and do some quests, and i have to say this game just gets better with gameplay, and i dunno if i would ever get bored with it in retail. Thou it almost seems like you gain "skill" too fast, i cant guage how advancement will be in retail obviously, but at this point it seems very easy to advance, which is a double edged sword, while giving a sense of accomplishment and power it could fall victim to Asheron Call 2's "Beating the game" syndrom of reaching a point where theres nothing left to do.
The missions are well thought out for what they are, i like that you can attack anything within range even if you cant reach their platform for a long time, the Loot system is good, if a bit random, id rather have it be based on a class-based drop system where things more closely related to you would allocate to you, but i digress still better then Grab n Go tech of other games.
I look forward to the differing armor and clothes in the game, if the beauty and style of different shields and weapons is any indication this will be a major high point for finding better armor. Right now im using a Skull Shield and Toother(IIRC) sword just for looks, it is rather awesome lookin. Also i love the ease and variety of dyes, it adds alot even to Alpha.
Skill gems seemed hard to get at first, but with 2 days of farming its MUCH easier to get the ones ya want, still seems still like they mine as well have a skill tree since the gems will be easy enough to get with the vendor trading system. But oh well.
So in finality i WILL be buying this game when it launches, and look forward to seeing any of you there...... even if the gems still suck
