I was wanting to try EVE but a friend told me not to waste my time, that a new player didnt have a chance, that skills where based over time and I would never be as good as anyone that started before me. Is this true? Should I even start playing?
Yes you should consider playing. Only a select amount of your skills can be used when flying a select ship so it is possible to "max out" the skills for a ship. The longer you play the main advantage you get is you can get closer to max out more types of ships giving you more options of what to use.
Will you ever have more Skill Points than people who started before you? Probably not. But that's in the same way that someone born before you in IRL would have had more opportunities in life.
In EVE you will find that all you need is player connections and your own determination to be successful.
Skill Points are tools, not goals. Someone may have a bigger tool box than you, but there is only ever a right tool for the job.

basically he is saying what makes a successfull palyer involves the following.
I agree, it's all about specialization and technique in EVE.
Sure, someone who started playing 2 years ago will have more skill points than you, but if you specialize in a particular ship or in a particular role and the other player has points all over the place, you can be more than a match for him. The skill tree is so massive that no one will ever max out all the skills in the game (at least not any time soon) so there's no worry about meeting someone with "uber" skills. And like the other guys said, skill points are only half the battle.

Actually you only need to specalise in the begining once you are experienced and specalised you can branch out.
Why is everyone wants to be better then someone else in the game. I mean I understand if you want to be better/cooler then someone else in real life but game?! Just have fun, play the game!

I started only 6 months ago, I was under no illusion that I would eventually all powerful but I knew what I wanted to do and I'm now fairly confident in that role.
IMO I don't see how anyone can play MMO's and not play EVE as it truly is different to everything else out there and I believe the skills being time based make it far superior than the button bashing and repetitive clicking of other MMO's.
It a nice sense of satisfaction when I get to that lvl 5 knowing I've been playing about doing other things.
plus the general community(if you dont go on the forums too much as they can be depressing) are very helpful even after they have just creamed your ship
do it...take the plunge

Yep the "you can never catch up so it´s waste of time" people haven´t really realised that there is no need to catch up or are just trolling, The start is a bit rough but not because the catching up aspect but because you simply don´t have skills to do that much. Though the key isn´t just waiting for your skills to rise but to join a good group of people to play EVE with. Social skills are important in EVE and im not talking about the skills you train ingame.
Also I think the learning skills are completely needless timesink which basicly force you to waste couple months on them just be able to gain skills at what is seen to be the normal rate by most players. But don´t worry there is also "xp grind" in EVE and its called gathering isk for example the advanced learning skills cost 22.5 mil isk total which is a lot for a new player.
I basicly see EVE as a book that everyone is recommending but at the same time they are also saying that it´s really hard a book to get into. You have have to keep reading the first couple hundred pages no matter what because in the end you will be rewarded by a great reading experience. Of course tastes differ and sometimes that book everyone has recommended wasnt that good for you.
The main thing new player should remember regarding skills is that they aren´t the secret to having fun in EVE actually they probably are the complete opposite for some people who don´t wanna risk losing their precious implants and therefore won´t do anything "unsafe". The secret to having fun in EVE is interacting with other people and you certainly don´t need skills for that.

30% Skills that you need to train.
20% Guts.
50% Experience.

A great man inspires men with what he can do. A great leader inspires men with what THEY can do.
