So what goals do people set for themselves in this game? I played it briefly and I was like... Okay, here's some cruddy quality 1 tools. I guess if I keep trying I could get better quality tools. But then I'm like... What's the point? I'd just be making better tools so I could in turn make, well, better tools. The crafting system as a whole seems fairly interesting, but the crafting action itself is boring. Yet, there's not a whole lot more to do in the game. Short of maybe, well, finding some means to recruit a bunch of people and terraform the land to make strange artificial features just to do it.

I've played a fair chunk of beta, up 'till now, and i've had a lot of fun while playing it.
Goals can be anything from making a high quality hammer, to being the best carpenter out there, or even wiping out your enemies villages(Wild Server).
For the crafting, to make a higher quality tool, you need to improve it. Examine it and it'll tell you what needs to be done.
To make the game more fun, go find a group of people, or get some RL friends, build a couple of houses together, and start working on making good stuff.
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
