It was a bad day hauling in low security space ;-)

A bad day for hauling…

Somewhere, deep in the void of a 0.3 sec system, a lone pod pilot cries himself to sleep. He is a sad pilot, remorsing over the loss of his last ship like many out there across the universe. Only for this last pod pilot unlike many of you, his last ship was carrying 40 billion ISK worth of things.

Behold.

**** Truncated - mail is too large ****

That’s right, read up right there and cry softly. Someone actually flew a Viator-class Blockade Runner through lowsec, unescorted and unscouted, carrying almost a Titan’s worth of deadspace goods. And they were caught by a 6 point scrambling Lachesis.

This killmail is truly amazing, and unfortunately for the lucky pirates scoring such a kill, any gods they may have believed in decided to destroy ever last item carried by that transport, as it was all in a single giant secure container. The Overseer’s Effects themselves were easily worth more than 15 billion, imagine what kind of profits could have been reaped from the rest?

Now, the next question springs to mind: How on Earth did anyone get all these goods? It’d take more than 180 runs of complexes to acquire the overseer’s items alone, taking over a month of respawns alone to get. Two theories come to mind, and neither of them speaks good news for the victim.

Theory 1: He was hauling an alliance’s worth of goods for sale into liquid money for the alliance deep in 0.0 space.

Theory 2: He was a complex farmer who just got set back over a month in pay by the work of a pair of plucky space pirates.

If this pilot is lucky, he was part of that first group. His Alliance (Probably Red Alliance or Against All Authorities, judging from the Gistii and True Sansha items there), just lost a couple of motherships and will probably punish him. Looks like someone’s month has been ruined!

If this pilot was unlucky, he was a dirty isk-inflating complex farmer, and is losing a job over this. If so, good riddance. The less isk-sellers on Ebay, the better for Eve. Looks like someone’s career has been ruined!

Either way, piracy sure pays for the patient and lucky. Have fun with your 40 billion worth of laughs, OctoberSnow Corp. You just sunk two Motherships of goods with a Lachesis and Slepnier. Now save some for the rest of us.

- Aries

I'll cry just to see the nightmare BPO gone - aka more price hiking but only in that area....

FFS thats a buggerload of items, bet that person threw one hell of a temper tantrum when he jumped through the gate, then cried after kicking his tower, then woke up the next day feeling like he should never log into eve again to save himself from death

it was a news article from eve tribune that he pasted, link included at the bottom of the post.

could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?

I don't play EVE but I love to read the EVE forums as they are filled with such great tales of real heartache, political machinations, wild west lawlessness. EVE seems to create the most realistic human interactions of any MMO around -keep up the stories :)

Well I do have a nightmare so no worries there :-) mine costed me with minerals about 1 billion isk... I have always wanted a Nightmare from the first time I saw them, so when I had the chance I bought it.

Funny thing it was during the worse empire killings (suicide killings) and I where moving the bpc and the minerals around in a slow-ass hauler through systems like Jita... without problems :-)

I do not play anylonger (due to the dev thing) but on my character there should be 1 Nightmare, 1 Succubus, 1 Navy Vexor, 2 or was it 3 maybe of the Gallente Navy Comet, 1 Ashimmu (nice looking bloodraider ship I belive it was)... and all the other ships ofcourse I had there in my possession hehe...

I where ingame a sort of a gather, I loved to collect the faction ships and had plans to buy me a Phantasm cruiser also...

One of the reasons I posted it was to link to the EVE Tribune, which is a rather good online magazine for EVE IMHO

    http://www.eve-tribune.com/

The other reason I posted it was that I am not exactly a fan of ISK farmers and complex campers  (or would "whores" be a more appropriate term ?). And this was quite obviously a complex camper transport on his way to exchange a few weeks worth of ill gotten loot into ISK in the market hub of Jita. An alliance transport would AT LEAST have a frigate scout, but more likely a 30 man escort gang. I get a warm cosy feeling seeing such an ISK farmer being gang-banged hard. And hope MORE of this happens to make EVE as unattractive for their lot as possible. I was not personnaly involved in this kill, although I would have loved to.

And yes, I agree, of all the MMORPGs I play EVE generates the most "realistic" situations concerning win and loss.

If only the CCP devs would clean up their act and get the hell out of leading positions in player alliances as well as kick out all the bad eggs amongst their own kind. Then EVE would be (again) a great game.

    Have fun

Good to see that you understood nothing about this post (e.g. that i only reposted an article).  There have to be THESE people too.

Or maybe you are a complex and ISK farmer yourself .... in that case ... YARRR  ;-)

yeah I think it is pretty safe to say that this guy was a complex-farmer ... I know myself as I used to live in low sec that to haul stuff around in low sec you where better of with some escort.

I remember I where to haul something big from one low sec system, in the freighter I had 1 scorpion, some named items worth about 1.5 billion isk (corpmates tanking equipmetn for his raven..) and some other corp stuff.

Anyway on my way out I discovered that the station "shot" my freighter straight down so it took alittle while for me to line up for warp and this some pirates took advantage of and starting to bumping me.

Ofcourse since I where abit prepared I called in the support that came to rescue so I could dock again... with 35% hull left on my Freighter :-)

Where kinda fun.. never really had such experience in other mmorpg's... I play WoW now and well pvp is not that fun, infact I belive that playing Battlefield 2142 is better pvp than WoW :-) but then again I play both LOL

Every SANE pilot would use a cov ops or a extremely tuned up interceptor with cloak to make a few trips ... e.g. with the BPOs, BPCs, Overseer effects and the really high priced modules (in the 300+ million range).

Then, and ONLY then, you COULD risk running the gauntlet with  the Viator with the "lesser" ***cough cough*** modules .. and even then I would fit a cloak + stabbers in all low slots and use a frigate scout.

    Have fun

    PS:

In 0.0 space : With the new patch there is no log-off-emergency-warp-escape trick anymore once you are in a bubble from an interdictor or a mobile warp bubble. That means a LOT of people will die horrible in game deaths in the next days ;-)

This is exactly why I am seriously considering re-subbing to Eve for the third time since 2003. I cancelled my EQ2 sub the other night, purely because despite being a beautiful, mature and polished game I am done - once and for all - with generic fantasy, level, itemization based gameplay.

What has fascinated me about Eve is the free-form, sandbox gameplay mechanics, and the possibilities therein. Eve is all about risk management because even in high-sec space you can still be podded. Of course, just because it is a possibility doesn't mean it frequently occurs. But one should take steps to mitigate this risk.

I remember when I last played a couple of years ago, I was in a transportation corporation, where we entered into contract to deliver goods/services from system A to system B. Fairly boring and humdrum, you would think? The real kicker is for the Machiavellian possibilities that could be exploited by the cunning, the unscrupulous and the ruthless.

As many long-time Eve players will doubtless know, to transport goods from one system to another usually requires collateral (consideration) - MUCH more collateral than the goods are worth, if you're smart (and you would be surprised at what goodies you can obtain if the unsuspecting person putting up the collateral mis-prices the goods. There's a name for it: arbitrage. Or simply, "Ha Ha!" - to quote from Nelson) - as insurance against the party transporting the goods failing to fulfil their obligation, for whatever reason.

    Pay particular attention to 'whatever'.

My corporation leader informed us all that he had entered into contract to transport goods from system A to system B. The deal was a relatively small deal for the other party but a big deal for our corporation which was relatively new. We were all excited (all 4 of us, including the corporation leader), and discussed the logistics required to transport goods from source to destination. 3 Mark IV/V haulers and 1 Frigate scout would be needed for this contract - one run. There was a small, but important consideration: the source was in Empire space but 0.0 sec Empire space.

    "DANGER! WILL ROBINSON! DANGER!"

Any player worth their salt, or who had sentimental attachment to their cargo and ship, would immediately have suspicions; as did we. To understand the risks involved and manage those risks, we examined the route - a linear route to source, then back along the same route to destination, examined notable pirate hotspots on that route, then planned accordingly.

There were risks: it was a linear route from system B (starting), to system A (source), then back to system B (destination). One or two systems along that route had pirate activity; and the system where we collected the goods was Empire 0.0 sec (AFAIK, no difference in Empire space between 0.4 and 0.0 sec - unlike non Empire 0.0. sec space) and was a bottle-neck system i.e. one gate.

After analysising the risks and using the in-game tools to judge pirate activity, frequency and last kills/pods, we agreed upon a time (out of normal playing hours) and date for our run, and had our scout create gate BMs [book-marks] and take the lead a system ahead to report on system activity.

The run went smoothly and we arrived at the source (collection point) to pick up the goods without trouble. When we left the station - Empire 0.0 sec space - to begin the journey back, our scout suddenly reported that the gate on the other side - in the next system - was being camped. Bottle-neck system, camped gate, 3 haulers full of valuable cargo ... The same pricking fear filled our sub-space chatter: this was a set-up.

Circling the space station, we decided to keep in range of the station, and remain patient whilst our scout reported on activity. After quite some considerable time, our scout eventually reported that the gate was clear, but to hurry because he was noticing unusual build up of activity in the system. We agreed that we would synchronise our warp (we had all trained the group warp skill) and due to the BM usage would exit warp exactly 2km from the gate and jump simultaneously.

We clicked on warp and started to group warp to the gate. This was going to be cake. Then we hit the gate.

Not 2km, or 3km, or 4km or even 5km out. 15km and further, 3 Mark IV/V haulers exited warp from the gate to find a cluster of ships in star formation, circling the gate. The static of sub-space chatter was filled with panic-stricken shouts and cries. We had fluffed up our jump! Our scout was asking where we were with increasing anxiety, whilst we were all scrabbling about, taking evasive maneuvers. 2 of the haulers headed for the gate at full speed (any hauler pilot knows that 'full speed' essentially means starring at the screen, desperately hoping that you're not going to get jumped), whilst I attempted a 180 degree turn and warped back to the station.

Whatever idols to unknown deities or strange, odd-plasticine shaped objects that decorated the ship's controls we had, obviously worked because the ships that were circling around the gate were oblivious to our prescence - either that, or were dumb-founded with shock that 3 Mark IV/V haulers, fully laden with cargo had just warped over 15km from the gate.

To this day, I still do not know whether the contract was set-up, or why those ships didn't react. Whatever the reasons, we managed to deliver the cargo to the destination, received our collateral as well as the hefty contract fee, as agreed. The corporation split a short way later for unrelated reasons, with the assets distributed evenly amongst the members.

I can still remember that cargo run, and the prickling sensation of fear at exiting warp to find the gate circled with predatory ships.

Impatience + ignorance = loss of ISK in the world of eve.

Every single hauler pilot needs to read this post badly. Also for people to haul stuff themselves they do really need another account. All this dude had to do is scout himself.

Man... I don't know but I'm sure theres some hardcore people in EvE right now that would have rather got kicked square in the groin then lose all that stuff.

Great story! This is why EvE is great.

Oh, I think I was online when this freighter got hit. One in my corp was going balistic about some freighter loot his friend had. Being stuck in Jita, I didn't really pay attention.

making multiple runs in a lesser cargo ship is just as much of a loss.  If you're going to spend 10 hours hauling stuff in a covert ops instead of risking one run in a ship that can hold it all, then that's too much of a compromise in my opinion.  When the curse alliance ended and took over S-U84 in syndicate, I'd bring back one assload of zydrine in an armageddon or something or whatever.  I didn't want to dink around with multiple trips.  It's a big loss yeah, but if you're going to compromise how you play to run loot to something you've already lost.

Well I sure hope he buys an occator to replace that ship, there's like 4 of them in Amarr for 92 million, cha ching

This kind of stuff really makes me wanna play EVE... But I can't even get pass 14 days trial with out getting uber bored of it. I mean... I love mining, I love fighting (tho never I did PvP) but... About half way through trial I just lose interest. I mean... I don't feel connected to the world at all. I don't want to play as a ship... I wanna be pilot! And damn egg thing just doesn't cut it for me. But I heard they will add new avatars in-game in the future. Walking around space station, shady trading behind a corner and RPing in a bar - Add that and I'm soled for good :)

And it hurts so much some times... Like when you finally get a new ship. You love it! It looks so great... And only thing in the world you wanna do is to grab a joystick and just do one spin... But you can't. It is killing me :D (I understand joystick flying makes no sens for big ass ships... but I'm talking about smaller ones - fighter like ships).

Tbh. I gonna go with another trial this or next week. Hope I get hooked since for half a year now I'm looking for a MMO to play... At least till PotBS.

Every time I read your post, I die a little inside...

I wanna be pilot! And damn egg thing just doesn't cut it for me. But I heard they will add new avatars in-game in the future. Walking around space station, shady trading behind a corner and RPing in a bar - Add that and I'm soled for good :)

I completely understand where you're coming from.  It took me numerous account cancellations to 'get' this game.  It finally happened when I got in with a corp with a bunch of people that I actually liked.  This game is all about the people you like, or the people you hate.   When I stopped playing EVE like a game, and treated it like a Virtual universe - thats when I started to get interested in it.

There's a pirate corp I absolutely despise.  I mean, I've never felt so much emotion towards a group of people on the Internet, and this is shared by my corp members.   I'm connected to this virtual world emotionally.  This happened in other MMOs too, of course, but EVE takes these experiences and mulitplies them.

Still waiting for your Holy Grail MMORPG? Interesting...

I really see where you are going now i know im a bit of an eve fanboi but then again i started eve when it was new and a bit easier. Right now its a bit hard for a complete new guy to get into eve now. My advise is for you to join a player corp of some sort that way things will be made easier for you.

No corp would take me in while I'm on trial... And even if they would, I don't know... I would feel like s*it if I would get bored again while they invested there time to show me the game and teach me some basics.

Be honest with them some new newbie filled corp wil take you in if you keep looking. After all i committed corp theft and i told my current corp all about it the whole truth and everything yet they have taken me in.

WOW. Thats quite the list of losses. I'm sure that set a corporation back quite a bit.
