The Only True American Genre

I was thinking that there lies an untapped market in MMOs, The Western.  A company could use one of their existing platforms and change the graphics to suit a western theme.

If anybody has any ideas on this I would like to hear them

Anyone would play a western game if it is good enough, although most people would prefer a more typical setting, or indeed a more futuristic setting. I think there is only so far you can go with a western setting and i imagine any game would be limited in scope.

4 stars sucks :( i want my 5 stars back!

I don't think that it would have a limited scope at all.  The setting would be the west, but you don't have to have it in a real place.   The only drawback I can see is the death-system

The western themed mmorpg would only attract people that are interested in that sort fo thing..therefore they won't get the broad band of players only the ones that actually want that sort of thing..I for one don't think I would buy that.

I think it's already been done or is in the works, A western mmorpg that is.

Ezikeil, are you referring to Priest?  I know that is a Western-horror game

There are 2 in the works actually:

    Wild West Sim

    and

    Frontier 1859

There was also Priest, but it's more of a Horror-Western combo thing, also they recently removed the English translations from their website, leading one to believe it won't be released over here. And actually I can't even get the site to come up at all now. But for a true western themed mmorpg try one of the 2 links above, both in very early stages of development.

I think it will depend on the content, because i am not really attracted to it right now but if it looks great and get good comments i will be interested

A straight western based on reality would get kinda boring IMO, but something in the line of Stephen Kings gunslinger style world would be interesting, or even an alternate future where things kinda revert to a western life style after an apocoliptic event, complete with mutant huminoids and creatures.

Take the western theme and make it intersting and you might have something that would work.

If a game is done right then I would play no matter the setting.

Was not really looking forward to a superhero mmorpg but CoH did it quite well and loving it now.

So I would play even though westerns don't intrest me if its good.

Not sure about frontier 1859 since it looks like they are just trying to raise the start funds and not even gone into making anything about the game yet.Just the idea atm and i seen thousands of ideas go dead in the past when it comes to mmorpg.

I have been hoping for a western themed mmorpg.  Wild West Sim looks like it has potential, but it's still early in development.  Thanks for the info Kunou.

In general I tend to prefer a fantasy setting in a game. However, if the content is good the setting tends to not be all that important.

I would try a western setting MMOG if the content was good.

A friend of mine once sent me a link to a mmorpg based on a western. At the site there were few details about the game (cool western music tho). Few features mentioned were mining, deeds, gunfights and suchlike.

It appeared to be very much in the planning stage with no screenshots. It will prolly never see the light of day.

Sorry i still don't have the link but microsoft springs to mind.

An MMO on a Western could be interesting, though after the first fifty gunfights and after the first four hours on a horse, it'd become sorta dry.
