It's Time For Katrina Victims To Get Off The Dole

outfctrloutfctrl Member UncommonPosts: 3,619

The House today is debating the Gulf Coast Hurricane Housing Recovery Act of 2007.

Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-TX), chairman of the conservative Republican Study Committee, introduced an amendment that would require victims of Hurricane Katrina to perform 20 hours/week of approved “work activities” to receive financial aid for housing.

...In an impassioned speech, Rep. David Scott (D-GA) addressed Hensarling on the House floor:

"This amendment is cruel, it is cold, it is calculating, and it is pandering to the schizophrenic dichotomy that has plagued this nation since they first brought Africans on these shores from Africa. And that is the issue of race and poverty."

WTF

Katrina occurred in late August of 2005, which means it has been about a year and a half since the storm. Yet, you have liberals complaining about people being asked to work 20 hours a week to qualify for hurricane welfare? Give me a break. Well, it makes sense if you look at it in their perspective.   Remember, they rely on the "downtrodden" for their votes. LOL

Just because people suffered through Katrina doesn't mean that you receive a get out of work for the rest of your life free card and are entitled to mooch off of your fellow citizens in perpetuity.

Does that sound harsh? Well, let's just put it this way: people in the United States suffer through disasters of one sort or the other every year. There are hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes, fires, you name it and none of them have ever had as much spent on them as the people of New Orleans after Katrina. So now, 18 months later, it's long since time for the people who were affected by Katrina to get off the dole and start taking care of themselves.

Living in Houston, I can attest that this is not harsh.  The hurricane victims need to be taken off society's collective tit.  They have been sucking my city dry of resources for far too long and leaving my city's services in shambles without even a "thanks."

Having said that, what is a crime is what the insurance companies have done to the people effected by Katrina and Rita.  The fact that you can drive down I-10, nearly from Beaumont, TX to the Florida - Alabama border, and still see the destruction caused by these two hurricanes is amazing.

I just recently went to Pensecola for my Brothers retirement from the Navy of 30 yrs.  He took me around and showed me some of the destruction Ivan did years ago.  It was amazing.

I agree with this. The time for sympothy and free stuff has been well over, its time to get back to reality and life. Most of these people expect to get throught the rest of their lifes for free because their shit was destroyed by a hurricane, and want the government to be eternatly indebt to them.

They chose to live dozens of feet under the sea level, not the government.

I have to agree as well

They seriously need to get off their butts and get a job.

    2005 ----- 2007

I think its time for them to be a responsible member of society again and stop sucking the welfare system dry.

People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.

20 hours?  I almost do that a day.  Definately not unreasonable.

I agree, but this is pointless right wing posturing without the work programs to back it up.  I'd have liked to see these same assholes take charge and actually get the city rebuilt.  Instead, the progress on this front is rather pitiful after two years because it ceased to be a hot political issue after six months.  I'd have liked to see them make sure that nobody got defrauded by insurance companies.  Oh right, there's no way in Hell any of these spineless twits would have confronted that level of big business.

Yeah, I think this should be signed into law alongside a public works employment program that mirrors the TVA.  Right after that, we need to sign a law banning congressional hypocrisy.

Personally it annoys me that a fairly large percentage of people are taking advantage of government help. However requiring 20 work hours per week to continue getting assistance seems more than outrageous considering how much money we spend in Iraq to rebuild infrastructure and homes that we deliberately destroyed.

These aren't people who ignored warnings and bought homes on Florida beaches. The city failed to maintain the levees and the Federal Government failed to make sure the city and state did its job.

I won't support less of my tax dollars going to Americans before I see less of my tax dollars going to Iraq.

20 hours a week is nothing! I can't believe that the liberals are suggesting that it's unfair to ask someone to work for this aid instead of taking it as a hand out, let alone trying to pull the race card.

Meh I say we cut em off completely.

It's been 18 freaking months, within that time alot could of been done instead of moping around complaining about the goverment meanwhile still bleeding the system dry.

Not to say ALL hurricane folks are in this situation, alot have indeed decided to go off and work.

The ones bleeding the new system were probally bleeding it before VIA welfare.

So either way they'll be collecting anyhow.

I think we should just start totally blocking off any aid by now, it's been 18 months, I could of built a house using lincoln logs with that much time by now.

I can't think of any good excuse as to why these people are still draining the system...oh well.

Apparently asking African Americans to work 20 hours a week is being racist lol.Anyways from a person whos lived in Florida his whole life,i know a thing or two about hurricanes and disaster zones. When we get hit,we help each other out, rebuild and get back with our lives and jobs.

Why shouldn't I confuse you for a communist? You seem to think that the only reason people work is for the benefit of the community, and not for their own gain. Which apparently also makes you conclude that those... Katrina Leeches simply don't work because not working offers the same benefits as working.

    Exactly, and that's a problem...hence our displeasure.

Wow. You certainly grasped my sarcasm.

And it shows you've lived in an unemployed family before...

While you sit here and call everybody a communist like a wannabe Macarthy, ill sit here and laugh at you for enjoying having your tax dollars pissed away on a bunch of leeches. If my house catches on fire, will you pay for my new house, food, car, clothes, and appliances for the next few years? Didnt think so.

I love it when people try to put sarcasm into text, do a poor job of it, and then act like it's everyone else's fault for not catching it.

See, that's sarcasm too, but it's easy to recognize, because obviously I don't love it...I'm annoyed by the high and mighty attitude, so in order to exhibit that annoyance, I put "I love it" instead of "I hate it" because obviously I don't LIKE it when people act the way you are acting...see how that works?  Tomorow I'll teach you about irony.
