How MMO's Actually Helped My Grades: A Comparison

TuutobTuutob Member Posts: 607
My Freshman Year:

Semester 1:

- Computer broke in first week, my Xbox 360 having problems.

- Playing Waterpolo for Bellarmine, morning and evening practices with 5 hour tournaments on weekends. This ends halfway through semester.

- 1 Honors class

- I get a computer for Christmas. So about 4 months without any MMORPG.

Final GPA: 3.2

Semester 2:

- Been playing World of Warcraft over break, having good fun.

- Swimming for Bellarmine, morning practice every other day, evening practice everyday, 5 hour swim meet every week. Still going on.

- Honors class picks up, along with science.

- I get bored of WoW and quit. Move to Ryzom, having a great time!

GPA so far: 3.6

I think the reason my grades have changed is because I have something to look forward to when I finish my schoolwork. During my first semester, my attitude when I finished homework was pretty much 'Cool, now what?'. I know if I keep my grades good, I can keep the computer and be rewarded with more playtime, and if my grades drop, no MMO's for me. The thought of this keeps me going.

Its the exact opposite for me.  I cant concentrate for shit on homework.  I never have and I have a feeling I never will.  Its like theres something in my brain making me not do homework.  I would rather stare at a rock than do it.  I have zero concentration for things that dont interest me and no willpower to force myself to do those things that dont interest me.

My parents think im just lazy, but its not even on the same level as laziness.  I think its the fact that the public education system feels like its all spoon fed bullshit.  Even in college the GE classes are totally useless.  Why the hell do I need to take an english class every damn year I am in school?  If 50% of the public school kids can't pass a test, screw them.  If they can't grasp the basic structure of an english sentence, why the hell am I punished for it by having to take english classes that teach the same damn thing year after year.

Why the hell was I required to take math up to calculus in high school?  I hate the line teachers feed you, "You will eventually use this in everyday situations".  Thats a load of BS.  I have never used math from basic algebra on up in an everyday situation.  As long as I know how to add, subtract, divide, and multiply, leave me the hell alone.

Back when I was in school, I never did homework when I played an MMO. Everything I had to do I delayed until the last day, then until the evening, then until next morning, then I made up an excuse on why I didn't do it. My grades were always bad because of it.

    MMOs kill :)

Lol I thank Christ Almighty for getting me through College before MMOs came into existence. I would have never graduated lol

But hey, as long as I get to keep having fun for a good 4 hours a day, it's all good. Call me a tool, but I may be the one controlling whether you eat or not in ten years

In all seriousness, I agree that Algebra 1 and on is completely useless and anyone who thinks they're socially advanced compared to others because they're in Calculus AP Honors their freshman year should go fall off a cliff.

MMO's actually have no effect on my grades. Whether I'm playing a game or I'm not, I'm still not doing my homework. I don't have an MMO to play (I'm going to try Everquest 2 again), but that doesn't mean the time I DON'T spend on MMORPGing is done on homework. I'm just really lazy. Without an MMO, I find something else to do. Like a friend of mine and I are working on an MMO blog right now.

There is always stuff to do besides homework, even without an MMO.

I'm also the opposite of you Tuutob! Since playing MMOs I have found less and less time to do homework and my grades are failing. I have an RE project due in on friday and I have only done 1 page of 8. I have missed like 20 homework deadlines since the start of the year due to MMO and my head of year is complaining to my parents, not good. My head of year is a scary moustache woman.

The days of homework are behind me, but I was and still am like Lanmoragon. If something doesn't interest me, I can't pay attention.

Like he said he'd rather stare at a rock, it's almost a 'can't as opposed to a 'not want to'. My brain will be pluggin' along on whateve it is I have no interest in and than BOOM! WHAT ABOUT THE DRAGONS?!

They came from the sea and they came from the sky, Captain America is going to die!

I never got the whole "You'll use this someday" because my teachers knew that was just a load of BS.  However, the one thing that you do get from math up through Calculus is Concepts.  I don't mean like right angle concepts and whatnot.  I mean how to think through a problem you might have in everyday life.

As for the point of this Forum I have to agree with Thaak....Currently no MMO, no console game, nothing.  And so instead of doing more work, I move to the message boards lmao.

I've been playing mmos since I was 10, so I wouldn't really know how my grades would be effected without them.

Exactly. You are exactly right good sir.

Let's face it guys...we are just a bunch of losers without girlfriends. If we do have girlfriends, they are ugly.

(I'm just kidding. I'm being serious when I say my girlfriend is the most beautiful girl in the world.)
