Just got an e-mail from this crappy game explaining the pay to play cost. I love how they use WoW to as an example (see the highlight):
PRICING
You all know that MMO's are expensive to develop in the first place, and they also have ongoing costs to keep them interesting and evolving. We have lots of plans for Carpe Diem and feel that it has a great deal of potential. However it does need careful nurturing. We want to continue to expand the war between Uzziel and King David, hopefully getting players more involved on both sides. We feel it important to introduce new ideas continually to the game, particularly using the Regiments and creating frequent large-scale battles. All this takes money and hence we feel Carpe Diem has to be a pay to play game.
However, we know we have to be realistic, and accept that people wont pay as much for Carpe Diem as for the really big MMO games like D & D Online, RF Online or the granddaddy of them all, World of Warcraft. They all charge around $14.99 and we feel we have to be competitive with them.
When we surveyed a lot of you on our payment plans and methods, you made it very clear that you were happy to pay for Carpe Diem but that it should not be set at the high end of the market. There was also general apathy towards our pay to play weekly model, because a lot of people like to leave their shops open while theyre busy in the real world.
So taking all these factors into account weve arrived at this idea:
An initial download cost of $29.95 which includes the
first months subscription
Thereafter a monthly subscription with the following
options available
One month $9.95 or 8 Euros
Three months $26.95 or 21 Euros
Six months $49.95 or 39 Euros
We must point out that for European citizens VAT is additional (sorry, not our rules)
As a British company we will also offer a sterling price (tally-ho chaps!)
Not only do they make a crappy game (my opinion) but they obviously have no knowledge of mmo history to boot

Much though I detest WoW personally, there are perfectly reasonable arguments for saying it's the most respected MMORPG on the market.
If you report posts and whine about them being off-topic, you'd better take the rulebook from up your arsehole - it'll chafe terribly.
Heh, most played doesn't make it the most respected. Anyway, I just think it was hilarious that they made this comparison. At least they admitted that their game does not deserve the same amount of money others do. Now if they'd just realize people are not going to buy this POS for $30, much less pay a subscription on top of it, it would be even better.
personally i like carpediem but i don't want to pay that much for the game i mean runescape is cheaper.
i like how they gave extra's for the old closed beta testers.
Yeah, I got my e-mail yesterday with my gift code thanking me for my time in beta. I threw it away. Their game sucked so bad I didn't even last the first day before I uninstalled it. A pixellated bauble isn't gonna make me suddenly see a turd as s rose
Ok, I'm missing something. What exactly does my sig have to do with this?
Actually, most professional mmo companies do send e-mails to their customers all the time Runescape is a bad example to use for how mmo companies run games. I take it Runescape was your first mmo? Trust me, after you play some real mmorpgs, you'll wonder why you ever touched it or Carpe Diem. But, your right. Everyone has their own opinion. And mine is that Carpe Diem sucks. And I do have the right to say that.
i am not saying that i am saying that don't say something bad without getting some big feedback
Compared to them, ANYONE is a big name
What i hate is that they claim to be british and yet spout crap like tallyho chaps when mentioning british. They are the sort of people that would claim to have heard a british accent...not english, irish, welsh or scottish but british. grrrrrr .
Maybe they spellt their game title wrong and it shoudl really be Crap Diem
thanx to everyone contributing to this thread - it really made me laugh !!
"When we surveyed a lot of you on our payment plans and methods, you made it very clear that you were happy to pay for Carpe Diem ..." PW
For a "British" company - they sure dont get irony!
"You all know that MMO's are expensive to develop in the first place." PW
luckily the Korean Developer took the big cost hits on this one then
