Capital city taking...Hype, or actually promising?

I remember hearing in an interview, one of the devs saying that you would actually be able to take over the enemies capital city.

it was said after aquiring a certain number of  points, you could eventually assault the captial city. The idea of actually being able to take over towns, and castles is pretty awesome. But they never mentioned if you would be able to keep them, or if your factions NPCS would spawn there. I hope they don't do something stupid and eventually make them revert back to whoever's faction owned it in the first place. if a town gets captured, they should make it so you have to go back and try to retake it. And they should do the same with a capital city. Of course the question of how to balance this out always comes into play.

So how do you think they are going to make this work?

They could do the same as Lineage II does. Wich is basically, each town has it own castle. Every now and then (like every month or so) clans can sign up for castlesiege as it's called. If they manage to overtake the Castle, then the guild who took it will control it + the incoms of the city it belongs to until the next time there's a castlesiege. Now, obviously they can defend it so they can keep it for longer. The capital cities in WAR tho, sounds like the biggest city of the two factions? I reckon once their taken they'll go back to the respective owners ie. Empire if Chaos charges and vice versa. Wich in my ears suxs. Even tho, lets not lose faith and hope for the positiv side that you actually get to keep it for lets say a month they get to try to retake it! But, you never know, don't get your hopes up. But indeed, to sum things up - you will be able to conquer the other factions cities, but keeping them, I dunno! :(

Well, just listen to the video podcast about sieged rvr or something on the main site.  www.warhammeronline.com

I think that, like the video said, they will have to take the neutral zone first.  Then they have to raid the 4th tiered area.  First of all, you have to take over most of the tiered 1-3 zones.  Then once you have captured the 4th tiered area, the capital city becomes open to attack.  You can capture this city, but they will have systems reset it back the the neutral zone.

    WAR RvR Video Podcast

(The heading in your browser might say "Making WAR Music" but it's the right video)

I believe this is what you're looking for.  It explains how RvR works from Tier 1 to Tier 4 including Capital Cities.

As far as we know (and the developers have stated this) you will not be able to keep your enemies capital city indefinately. That being said its been hinted at that losing the capital city of your enemy wont simply be a question of the system reseting. That is to say its been speculated (and hinted at) that the city's inhabitants which have fallen will get minor buffs to help them eventually take back the city which gradually increase. Guards will also spawn to support in getting the city back until eventually (I imagine) it becomes overwhelming and you just cannot hold the city. So a careful mix between a timer system and player intervention.

The fact of the matter is you want to be able to get the city back eventually and that will be hard especially if your side is less populated than the enemies side. The reward for being able to take over the city is being able to ransack the kings treasure (I hope) and take the king himself! So they will definately give you some time to enjoy having taken over your enemies city but it wont be indefinite. How everything works in practice though remains to be seen.

They do cover what will happen. Let's say the Greenskins just took the capital city of the Dwarves. The Greenskins would control it for a while, the longer they held it, the stronger the Dwarven guards would be that are respawning to try and remove the Greenskins from the city. Over a period of time, the Greenskins would lose control of the Dwarven city and we would start the whole scenario over again from the beginning. In a game like this, you can't have permanent control over another teams capital city. Population imbalances would basically cause one side to never be able to regain their capital and people would begin to migrate away even more than they already would. For the longevity of WAR, the capitals need to be reverted to the previous owner.

I like to look at it in this manner and I'll use the NFL since it's simple. In September, all teams start out at 0-0. Through the season, they win and lose. When the regular season is over, they enter the playoffs. The Playoffs are a win or go home situation. That leads up to the Super Bowl. The Tier1-3 and early T4 battles are about the regular season. When enough points are earned, the team that is winning moves the battle into the opposing teams home...the playoffs. If the defending team wins here, it's moved back. If they lose, the offensive team pushes into the capital city. If they win in the capital city, they win the championship for that year. The retaking is the Draft and Free Agency. The top dog team is always at a disadvantage right out of the gate. They have the last pick in the first round of the draft and they typically have players that leave due to salary cap issues. The retaking of the capital is this phase. When the season starts over, everyone is back at 0-0 again and it begins all over.

This is a neccessary way to handle it for the good of the game over the long haul. Sure it would be nice to permanently own another capital city, but if you want to continue to have people to fight, you have to concede this point. That's just how it works. It's more fun to win than lose, but not everyone can be a winner.

Hahaha, can't you just imagine everybody in the raiding party sacking the city then trying to divide up the loot? That'll be Chaos in itself! Hopefully it'll be more than a mad-dash for the Treasury.

You doesn't seem to have done any real research.

You take opponents city and eventually they get it back. By either taking it back themselves or just waiting a specific amount of time.

And WHY wouldn't this work? I don't understand.

They've told us quite a bit about how this will work.  They're not talking about capturing the enemy city really - just breaking in to sack and pillage the place.

At the highest tier of the game the realms fight over nine massive contested zones and six zone-sized capital cities - three zones and two capitals on each of the three tier 4 battlefronts. The goal on these battlefronts is to push the battle line forward zone by zone until you can sack the enemy capital cities. The fight starts in a neutral (or more accurately, heavily contested) zone halfway between the two capital cities. Win loads of victories there and ownership will tilt in your favor, locking down the scenarios, battlefields and public quests in that zone while opening those in your enemy's tier 4 zone and pushing the action closer to their capital. Earn enough victory points to gain control of that zone and the enemy capital itself will be open to attack.

Marching forward, you lay siege to the city, break down the gates (most likely a series of scenario-like siege-instances) and battle past the inner keep (another series of siege-instances). That done, with the city's massive gates now broken and wide open, the warriors of your realm will swarm into the city - rampaging through the streets, killing merchants, hunting enemy leaders and national treasures, engaging in intense street to street PvP combat for glory, experience, money and unique (pillage-only) weapons, armor, and gear.

Once the gates have been broken, a variety of Public Quests for both the attackers and defenders will activate. An attacker's goal might be to dowse the great Dwarfen forge (it's an act that the Orcs would love to do as an insult if nothing else) or to capture the enemy King (something that appears to be the culmination of a public quest series that will require the defeat or capture of a series of sub-bosses or locations). Enemy rulers who are defeated while sacking a city will be captured and escorted back to your capitol city (most likely marked like a beacon on enemy maps and under constant attack from enemy players trying to rescue them), placed in some sort of stocks and humiliated until the enemy manages to pull off a rescue raid and escort him home.

Armies won't be camping inside an enemy city forever. You'll break in, kill everyone, steal all their stuff and then march out of the burning ruins (preferably to go to the NEXT enemy city and do the same thing to them). To that end, various measures for driving the attacking force out of the city after some pre-determined period (variously reported as lasting somewhere between 2 hours and 2 days) have been discussed - the final solution will likely consist of one or a combination of these:

    - The server will start spawning in AI reinforcements (a few at first, but then in ever greater numbers).

    - Various internal gateways will be recaptured and closed one at a time, cutting those within off from reinforcements and allowing the defenders to clean out the lingerers area by area.

    - The server will start granting stacking bonuses to the defenders of a city, so that after a few hours even the lowest tier characters will be able to fight toe-to-toe against the max tier invaders.

    - Declining loot and reward bonuses for the defenders - the sooner they take their city back, the more loot and favor they'll gain.

When it's all done and the enemy has finally been pushed from the city, ownership of the intervening zones will be reset so that the battle can begin anew. One, or both, of the following will likely occur: the losing side will experience negative ramifications that will carry over into the next Campaign, or; the conquering side will experience worldwide faction buffs that will carry over into the next Campaign. Exact details haven't been revealed. Though a dominant enemy could technically fight their way back to sack the city again right away, the plan is to impose a 'recovery' period - a period of time before the city will again offer enough loot and wealth to make sacking it worthwhile.

All the loot you grabbed? You get to keep that.

((this comes from the third editorial at OW, compiling what we've heard so far in previews, interviews, and developer forum posts))

They explained it a little in one of the videos about how RvR works.  Basically you will be able to "hold" enemy cities for a specific amount of time and then the RvR zones will reset. (Otherwise it would be unfair especially if one race or one alliance was way more populated than the opposing force).

You wont be able to attack the capital until you have taken over some of the other RvR zones so it wont be like a swift surprise attack on the major cities without first attacking the smaller zones.  I think this also acts as an alarm system, to notify players that their cities could be in danger.

I think it has great potential.

For example if i am an orc and take over the dwarf city, for awhile, atleast, the dwarf will try to defend and push back the orc on his on. If the dwarfs fail to push the orcs out the city after a certain amount of time, WAR has systems which will eventually restore the city back to the dwarfs.
