Republican speaks out - US out of Iraq

olddaddyolddaddy Member Posts: 3,356

Republican Congressman Tim Walberg stated in an interview on WILS-AM that Iraq is safer than Detroit, supporting the position of the anti-war faction in calling for the withdrawal of US military forces from Iraq.

I have to agree 100% with this man. We do not need to commit US military forces to maintain the peace in Detroit, so why should we need them in Iraq? Obviously Detroit has a functioning democracy, elected officials, and is in the process of rebuilding itself. Detroit does not expect, nor has it received, assistance from the Bush administration. Per his observation, Iraq is in better shape than Detroit, so, why are we still in Iraq, and not re-directing our resources where they would be better served, in rebuilding Detroit?

I think it is time we cut Iraq off from US taxpayer funded public assistance. Just like the people that lost their homes in Hurricane Katrina, we are seeing how being too long on the dole weakens the desire for pride,  and independant accomplishment. Yes, those hundreds of billions of dollars we are spending in Iraq on welfare are detrimental to the developement of the Iraqi people. It is time we totally withdraw and give them the opportunity to, as Ronald Reagan would say, "Pull themselves up by their bootstraps", and show the world what the Iraqi people are truely made of.

God Bless America.

Doesn't look like they will be pulled out of Iraq anytime soon.

Bush vows to veto anything that Congress does about getting the troops out.

Doesn't matter if they cut off the funds, Bush can get the money by running the deficit higher.

Um...No.  If Congress cuts funding for the war in Iraq the military will have to pull out.  They won't have money in their budget to continue.

Just so you know it isn't necessarily Bush running a deficit.  Congress controls the purse strings.  Bush makes proposals and can veto (but won't because he doesn't have the balls) the budget passed by Congress.  But it is the Congress that ultimately determines the yearly budget, passes the bills, and sends them to the White House to be signed.

In my opinion, we would do more harm then good to pull out. The Iraqi's have now started to step up to the plate. Not as fast as some of our legislatures would prefer, but they are starting to step forward and do the right thing. If we were to suddenly pull out, they would be overthrown in days. Matter of fact, we can't even reduce the number of troups until we get to a point, that portions of their Army can take over sections that our soldiers are currently holding. But that's going to take time.

To win this war, we have to have their Army capable of dealing with the trouble and in sufficient numbers to maintain that strength. That would be a win. If we pulled out, then what we worked so hard to gain, colapses. That's a loss and we dont lose.

We are between a rock and a hard place. This war started in 1990-91. Our biggest problem is, we didn't finish it then. We pulled out and walked away. We should have left some military there to ensure compliance with their surrender terms.

Last time I checked, there haven't been many RPG or IED attacks in Detroit.

Iraq is a mess, and the U.S. never should have gone it that being said  leaving now would make thing much much worse.

This is stupid, he's looking for votes. Quite sad really.

Did you know: Egypt, Syria, Iran, and Lebanon all said they would go in and kill EVERY Sunni living in Iraq? That's mass genocide.... Do you know what would do? Yeah... you're right. It would be WW3.

Think before you speak, type, or post.

    How wrong you are.

This war was not started in 1990. This war was started in 264 B.C.

  • The United States government/military will never leave Iraq of its own accord...jesus h christ, they just built a $1.2 billion embassy complex the size of the fuckin' Vatican City!

It really doesn't matter that that republican has come out against the war...the Democrats have already given this Whitehouse more money in the emergency spending bill than it originally asked for!!

Additionally, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi deliberately stripped the Iraq funding bill of a crucial provision that would have required President Bush to seek congressional approval before launching a war on Iran!

Haven't you heard? It's been in the news enough!

Bush plans to run the deficit up like one would use a credit card if the funds for the war are cut.

He's doing it now anyway, what he's spending is what the US doesn't have. Since he took office the US is in debt big time.

    I agree with this statement.

Your argument is like a two legged dog with an eating disorder...weak and unbalanced.
