Huxley: GDC Preview

StraddenStradden Managing EditorMember CommonPosts: 6,696

At the Game Developers Conference, Jon Wood had the opportunity to sit down with Huxley Producer, Kijong Kang to talk about Huxley and get a breif demo of the game thus far.

Webzen's Huxley is described on its official website as, "a massively multiplayer online first-person shooting game (MMOFPS)". Why then does it have its own entry here at MMORPG.com? The answer, it turns out, if fairly simple. While cloaked in a first person perspective, Huxley has all of the trappings of an MMORPG, a persistent world, quests, clans, character growth, classes and more all make an appearance for this upcoming title.

At this year's Game Developers Conference, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Huxley Producer, Kijong Kang to watch a demo of the game and its progress thus far. Now, I should probably say that, for me, the entire design premise is about combining my two favorite genres into one, single game. This being my first up-close look at Huxley, I was extremely interested to see what this game had to offer.

Oh, ill try it. Since it seems to take allot of things from planeside (mostly the ideas of purchasable "abilities" and equipment)

But you just cant beat 133 + 133 + 133 a side battles.  This is also why I can’t play BF2 ETC... 64 people???? blah..

    Maybe I’m spoiled.

It just dosnt sound that action packed.

And to be quite honest...looks like unreal, or the other "Fat Meat head" player models from the countless clones.

Actually, battles will range anywhere from 1 v 1, to clan battles, to 100 v 100 race battles. Of course, in the final game, they may allow more than 200 players in a single area.

I have NEVER seen 100 x 100 advertised for this game, and with the graphics in the high end as we see here, I highly dought that.

Ill believe it when i see it, however, Network and graphics requirements makes 100 X 100 + vehicles and effects highly unlikely.

EDIT: 200 hundred now??? I really don’t think that’s true.

I have heard of numbers like this, and I have been keeping up with the game since it was announced.

I did a quick search to find some numbers, and I saw a number of about 120 per battle. Nobody is quite sure if they mean 120 as in 60v60, or as in 120 per side.

Note: When I mentioned 200, I was referring to a total (100v100=200 total).

Are you serious, this game from the getgo was advertised as 120 vs 120 battles. Idk what you have/havent been reading, but the 5v5 12v12 battles are supposed to be taken place in special Instance-like areas at the heart of the 120 v 120 battles. Its pretty much who ever gets in those instances first is the ones who will be fighting inside, and its those inside battle that will decide the fate of the battle, not the outside killing spree.

Readup more before you start bashing games for something you dont know about.

I’m only going by what the article said, and my educated knowledge of current tech, and judging by the screens, multiple hit areas.. ETC..

So your saying that the 120 vs 120 is really that many spread across 15 or so instances each with 8 to 12 people in them.

So, I’m still correct if what you say is true.

Other than that, i do not see one area with 100 x 100 people, with that high-end graphics, multiple hit areas, multiple equipment slots, effects of battles, and vehicles being possible.

Unless its not really FPS (As in Real time updated/combat).

And im not basing anything, Calm your forum-hate.

I'm an old MMORPG player and I'm frankly sick of the click/button mash combat.  I am playing PS now as I have in the past and I usually enjoy it, although every now and then it's tough to find a nice even battle.  This game has been one I've been kind of eyeballing but I'm really excited about the additional RPG elements it has over PS.  And I really hope the have the option of smaller squad v squad based battles in addition to the massive 100v100 PS type fight.  It really is hard to beat the feeling of immersion in a massive PS battle with flail fire, aircraft everywhere, the occasional stealther sticking a knife in your back, etc.

This one is up on my hype list now though just behind AoC-- another game in my personal favortie genre with some new ideas for a combat system after 8 years of button clicking!

I am really looking forward to this game. Im looking at this and Tabula Rasa.

This looks the better because of the first person combat view, i really hope they can pull off the large scale battles but the small team death matches are a nice addtion. I also really like the look of the characters and the MMORPG elements, ie character advancing.

Im in, but... these comments of next gen graphics... forgive me if Im wrong, but arent they designing it off the Doom 3 engine? I thought they were for some reason...

Quake 3 Engine.  They mention it in a live demo from 2005 on gamespot.  But Webgen's using their own network code and such so that they can fit 5000 people per server cluster, or 2500 per faction.

EDIT: I suggest watching the vid from 2005.  It's 2 years old, and they point out the design in a guy's hair and some leather armor and it looks damn near close to a CG.

Not sure about the instances and how that's supposed to work.  The only thing I didn't like that they mentioned in that vid that's 2 years old is the scenario that if you're level 5 and a guy that's level 20 wants you in his guild, he can give you kickass gear that you wouldn't be able to get by yourself unless you leveld up.  Not a fan of equipment designs like this, as it removes the ability to play the game without a clan/guild, and you're almost forced into it just so that you can compete with the "kickass gear" that others have.

Mrbloodworth, I can't say this without sounding insulting but you come off as extremely ignorant.

If you did some research (instead of talking out of your ass about your supposed tech knowlege) you would have seen the developers have mentioned newly designed software/servers that allows 100v100 battles, with the unreal 3 engine.

Go back to your planetside, you sound like someone who is easily scared by new and different things. Don't feel bad. We're all scared of that which we don't, or can't, understand.

Hehe, have you seen the videos or screenshots? I would be blown away if they could get those results with the q3 engine.

Where did I say it wasn’t possible?

All I said was I have doubt. Servers are only part of the equation. User performance is the other half.

If they have the network and server architecture to support it, great I look forward to what Huxley has to offer.. However, this doesn’t resolve that they are using high-end graphics I’m not sure how many people computers can run at a decent resolution, with that many people, that many effects, ETC with 100 players in an area.

I guess I still sound ignorant because i don’t believe a company that has no true precedent to go by. All you have read is marketing/media hype.

I still hold my doubts about the true playability of this game.

The last line of your post makes sound like a small child. I enjoy my planetside, and look forward to Huxley, but apparently i must hate the game, because i doubt the calms of its creators based on reality.

Because as we all know, to have a concern about a game, or to dislike one aspect of a game, means we hate it.

Please try not to be so simple minded.

Guys, this passive-aggressive name-calling and arguing should probably stop now. It's getting awfully close to flaming in here, and I'd hate to see people get warned / banned over this.

Was a nice discussion untill  fanboy showed up.

BTW stradden, did you see any battles that included more than 12? Did they say what the max number of players would be per area?

Anything about the areas design, or mitigation of server load?

I’m very curious about how they are going to be doing that many players as they clam.

While this GDC article is decent but the GDC article over at gamespot.com is 10x more detailed with all the information includes release date. (Go to gamespot.com and search Huxley 3/19/07 article)

To answer your question, each pure PvP zones that does not includes any quest PvE mobs (ie deathmatch, capture the flag and many other modes) will allow 200 players. 100 per faction. 4 men makes squad, 5 squads forms platoon. 5 platoon becomes 1 company which equal 100 players. For PvE questing zone with PvP it allows 64 players max, 32 from each faction.

User performance???? Are you joking? Isn't that why they have adjustable graphics settings in games? You adjust the settings until you reach the desired performance. It might not look as "pretty" but it sure makes the game playable.

And somehow calling me "fanboy" is ok even after you were warned about name-calling? Smoooooth....

I have occassionally checked on this game. I am holding any opinions about it till I see it myself. Seems to have some interesting ideas but agree about the claim not  to need a clan yet people can give the best stuff to a new player. To me that makes it very decieving and not a nice thing to claim. There are people who will see the claim not to need a clan and think "cool, I play it casually" then get ran over by the guy in a clan that gave him top-end gear. I hate such claims and that worries me.

Interesting. I still wonder, when all is said and done, how this will play.

Vanguard is a steaming pile of crap that has nothing to do with your generalization of graphics settings and performance.

You are playing a rushed to market game that needed another 3+ months of optimization before being released. I had the benefit of being in the closed beta, that experience and knowing Sony's track record, saved me from wasting my money buying the retail version.

Just because you are angry that you wasted your money that doesn't mean other companies don't know how to optimize their games BEFORE releasing them. Welcome to yet another of Sony's -pay to beta test our game, haha suckers!-

For a 100 v 100 battle to go down, with all the bombs and skillz going off PLUS armor the server will crash. If the graphics we're a little dated, not like PS dated but maybe looks detailed like EQ2 and can run on a decent machine (but not ulgy models for some characters).

Once I see a video with 100+ v 100+ then I will belive it, and it has to be smooth like butter (or close to anyway) not <5 FPS for all the players now.
