First let me say I have been a gamer since many of you have even been alive. I have been playing roleplaying games since 1976, minatures since 1980 and have seen the evolution from paperback books to hard books to minatures to 256k,8b,16b,32b,64b.. to our current in video games.
I have seen games come and go, from the first company i worked with SSI(Strategic Simulations Inc) to the now. Video games and the current mmorpgs have changed considerably. Ideas have been stolen, changed, made anew.. But basically it all comes down to where did this originate. As George Lucas stated in sept of 1978 "Most of the ideas I got inspiration from are from the books by JRR Tolkien. As to Warhammer, AD&D,RIFTs,Traveller, or any of the other roleplaying games I grew up on they derived most likely from the same source. Most of the current genre of rpg or mmorpg videogames derive from one or many of the book sources mentioned above.
Now to the big question. Is WAR a clone of WOW. The answer is no. War and Game design workshop have been around long before Blizzard was even a company. Here is a little history lesson..
Published by Games Workshop
- Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay (main rulebook, hardback, 1986)
- The Enemy Within (campaign supplement, 1986)
- Dungeon Rooms and Dungeon Lairs (boxed floorplan set, 1986)
- Character Pack (1st edition, expanded rules for character generation, 1987)
- Shadows over Bögenhafen (second part of The Enemy Within Campaign, 1987)
- Death on the Reik (boxed edition, third part of the The Enemy Within campaign, 1987)
- Warhammer City (Middenheim sourcebook, 1987)
- Power Behind the Throne (fourth part of The Enemy Within campaign, 1988)
- Death on the Reik (republished as a hardback, 1988)
- Warhammer Campaign (hardback collection of The Enemy Within and Shadows over Bögenhafen, 1988)
- Something Rotten in Kislev (fifth part of The Enemy Within campaign, 1988)
- Realm of Chaos: Slaves to Darkness (first of the two Realm of Chaos volumes, joint WFRP/WFB/WH40K hardback supplement, 1988)
- The Restless Dead (collection of scenarios previous published in White Dwarf magazine, 1989)
- Warhammer Adventure (collection of the first three parts of the The Enemy Within campaign, 1989)
- Warhammer City of Chaos (collection of Warhammer City and Power Behind the Throne, 1989)
- The Empire in Flames (sixth part of the Enemy Within Campaign, 1989)
- Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay (main rulebook republished as a softback with minor corrections, 1989)
- Realm of Chaos: The Lost and the Damned (2nd volume of the joint WFRP/WFB/WH40K supplement, hardback, 1990)
This is only the roleplaying aspect of Warhammer. This does not include Warhammer-40k minature rulesets or that wargame which started even earlier.
As to Blizzard, Warcraft possibly got ideas stolen from the warhammer universe. Since the early warcraft game I and II have orcs so remarkably similar to warhammer orcs. But then as posted above. It all goes back to the original of which 90% of all fantasy is based off of. As to the World of Warcraft universe and the Warhammer universe. They are both are similar and both show the Epic fantasy to make them great games.
The argument from my point of view is Mote as they both have orginal concepts and ideas. And both live up to the high fantasy that makes us who love fantasy want to play. And that orginal fantasy lives on!! Thru the generations!

WoW took ideas and little history from Games Workshop (Warhammer).
Games Workshop will only make an mmorpg out of their history on warhammer, not cloning WoW..
thats what i've read in an interw. with Warhammer online.
don't know if it's true tho.
but i do know that Games Workshop has existed much longer than WoW so it seems logical to me..

Hopefully the one who thought up the name didn't understand swedish. In German
Bögen = archs,bows or curves
Hafen = harbor
looks a bit more likely - but you never know

WHy does it seem logical to you? The previous War Hammer games made by them were board games. The same systems won't be in use in an action based MMO.
Apart from the Orcs and the Elfs and the rest of the crap. What Im waiting to see is if WAR will steal from WoW things from its User Interface, just like Vanguard just did, just like the rest of the SOE products are trying to do.
Also, its not just about the lore and the fantasy thats dates in the 70's that the OP is claiming everything derived from. But its about taking a look and a feel from something that works and making it your own.
If load up WAR and it looks like WoW, am I suppose to say WoW copied WAR? Since WoW made their game first, if the world looks the same, if character movement is the same, and in short if the UI is the same.... who stole from who?? Yea they might of had the books first, but in the digital world, they created it and truth needs to stay...everyone is trying to make a copy of WoW to get some of that 7+ mil customers.
BTW... I think WoW is shit.
People like to think something is original simply cause they like it. When WoW came out... it dint look like SWG, it dint look like EQ1 or 2, it dint like like DoaC, it dint look like Anarchy, it dint look like UO. No, it looked like WOW. Nowadays everyone is trying to look like WOW and Im afraid WAR aint the exception.
Dont be WAR fanbois. Cause a WOW fanboi, is the same as a WAR fanboi, there both full of shit.
Seriously, who cares if a UI in one MMO looks/works the same as another MMO.
How many different ways can you make icons and actions?
As far as lore goes, I had to have a father son talk about Warhammer and Warcraft.
My teenage son thought that Warhammer stole the idea of Orcs, Dwarfs , Humans and Elfs from Warcraft. At least he knew that Lord of Rings came before either of them.
I'm sick of all the comparisions to WoW. Doesn't matter what game it is.
If they made a MMO based on Lawyers, I bet people would say they copied from WoW.
