I'm giving up on level based MMOs, they are just too childish for me anymore. I prefer skill based, however there are not many skill based out there. I know Ultima is probably the most popular skill based mmorpg. Darkfall, if it ever comes out is skill based. Is there any others?

Eve Online
Saga of Ryzom
Those are the only two that I know of off the top of my head.
I've been looking for a skill based MMO as well, and so far nothing seems to fit the bill.
Darkfall might come close, but I still hold to the belief that it's vaporware.
All I want is an open ended skill system, where aside from the starter skill kit, you buy your "low end" skills from trainers, and the "high end" skills are only avaible from quests, optimally. Once you learn a skill, it can only be increased via use, preferably with unused skills degrading on a curve, so the longer you don't use it, the faster it degrades.
Sadly, I doubt I will have my game any time soon, short of making it myself.
I agree, I don't think it's going to be anytime soon. If ever
I really miss old school UO.
I am waiting for an MMO that plays much more like an FPS than having an artificial skill system (except where magic is involved, of course).

I would prefer a duel game, where you gain levels by gaining skills. Elder Scrolls is a good example. I dont like the idea of degrading anything ever in a game. Some people have real lives and might not be able to get on for a while but they should not be penalized for having a life outside a game.
I LOVE the World of Warcraft game, right up till you hit max level its the most casual friendly game out. You can solo, you gain bonus exp while your NOT playing the game (rested status) so you dont fall too far behind your friends who get to play a few hours more a week than you do. But end game = teh sux. I have 2 level 70s and man I tell ya it sucks big time.

Yeah with the time it takes to put a game together i'd guess it'll be around 10 years before another good skill based game is released.IMO it's going to take a small group that would be happy with just 200k subscriptions putting out a game that doesnt really push the envelope graphic wise ,but puts alot of focus in the gameplay.
EVERYONE who works in the mmo field knows there is a target group of subscribers looking for this. Thanks to wow now they all want to hit the jackpot by doing whay wow is doing.

Runescape is the most popular skill based MMO
but im not sure it would be your type
Darkspace is almost purely skill based, although being a space game, the size of your ship (Scout, Destroyer, Cruiser, Dread) depends on the kind of power it can dish out. But if your skilled at combat, it wont always matter what ship your in or what your opponent is in, just on how well you can act and react towards them.
If you like space games, Darkspace is a good one to look at. It has it's flaws, abit more noticeable then alot of games, but it's still a great game. It may have a small player base, but that only means a stronger community. Many people are willing to help, but I cant lie. There are a few who'd make you want to head/desk.
Give it a try if your in to that kinda thing.

And soon to come PotBS.

My preference would be a hybrid of skilled-based and level-based progress. I am surprised that most games do not emphasize this. It is feasible to do this.
I think you should define skill based, as from what I've read here, only Darkfall and UO have been mentioned.
Yeah Eve, but that's really not the same thing as a pure skill based progression.
In Eve you earn skill over time, after reading a book on said skill, and continue to earn skill even while off line. It's by no means a pure skill based progression scheme, but it's not levels either.
Skill based as in UO and proposed in Darkfall is simply a progression based on player activity. Meaning you earn skill in what you do. Or whatever skill you use, you learn.
For basic skills and abilities, you can eliminate trainers or buying them, because all basic skills already exist on your character. Trainers did exist, for an initial skills gain at a price, or for buying spells which you could then train magic with.
You can also eliminate Class choice at character creation, because you can use any skill or ability anyone else can, or what you do, defines your character class. Pick up an axe, gain skill in wielding axes, strike with your fists, gain skill in hand to hand... just that simple, and natural.
UO had class selection, but you were never restricted in what you could do, or even changing title and class later on in development. Darkfall will offer prestige Class, which is different and a semi permanent choice similar to a level games class system. Still it offers more freedom than that.
Skills progression is far superior to level progression, but more difficult to balance or usually more trouble for developers. Advantages discovered by players usually turn into "templates", where players become less unique by a strict setup or development of skills and abilities.
By far, UO's system as originally intended was far superior to what exists today, in both UO (as it is now) and any other game I know of. Skills with hard and soft caps, and skill decay as a way to manage caps in skill points. It was a source of numerous complaints, but complaints are what ruined UO, and it really began going down hill when they corrupted the skills system.
That's what skils games are like, now I'l just sit and wait for Darkfall... should be the next best MMOg because everything else out there now and in developmant just seems like more of the ssame to me.
No more Trivial MMO's, let's get serious "again". Make a world, not a game
What I listen to
Well a hybrid MMO is pretty much anyone under the sun.
Look at AC, WoW, EQ, etc. you gain levels but you also get skill points to spend each level. Making those games hybrids.
Tribes 2 is back!!!! http://www.tribesnext.com/
And from the makers of tribes: Fallen Empire: Legions http://www.instantaction.com/
I agree. I've never been a big fan of level based games either. TO me skill & equipment based games have a more realistic element to it albeit in a virtual world. One of the best skill based games was SWG before the fall to the CU and the NGE.
As far as other skill based games in future. I hear that Fallen Earth is suppose to be skilled based. I don't think the games system for Star Trek Online has been announced yet.

In regards to Everquest, do you mean attribute points? I agree that does allow skilled-based customization. However, Everquest is an aggressively raid-oriented game, which I do not think made it "great" (other factors did, but that is my opinion), and the attribute points were essentially designed to enhance one's character performance for a raid, not to necessarily explore the world and so forth.
In terms of a hybrid, I was referring to a more user-customization feature in which attribute points, talent build, among other features would allow an individual to create a more complete picture of a character. It could be a lot of fun if executed. =D
MMO games played or tested: EQ, DAoC, Archlord, Auto Assault, CoH, CoV, EQ2, EVE, Guild Wars, Hellgate: London, Linneage II, LOTRO, MxO, Planetside, SWG, Sword of the New World, Tabula Rasa, Vanguard, WWIIOL, WOW, Age of Conan

Here is all they got to do and this will be the best game you ever played,
Have thousands of skills like running jumping kicking resting etc .
Ok this will stop alot of patches that need fixed like shammys are more powerful then rangers and so on.
Just have skill points giveing to you as you do things , like if you chop trees or fight or swim anything you do for as long as you play the game you will receave skill point that YOU CAN PUT WHERE YOU WANT!
This will also make everyone in the game diff right from the begging,
Like this if i just got 3 skill points and put them say in running this means i will be the fastest guy in the game thus far not less of corse someone puts theres in the same skill.
Everyone starts off on the same stats and if there is thousands of skill to place points you can all be the best in one thing.
WWIIOnline The Real War!
Roma Victor - A new skill based and open ended economy MMORPG. Everyone can become good at only certain things if you stop doing those things you will loose experience and eventually become bad at the skill. The game world depends on players they create roads, citys, food and other things. This is one of the best games I have ever playd since it's like being in another life you may not want to battle rather just open a little shop in a little town and play around with the games economy. Or maybe you think of a new Idea and offer restaurants. Well this world is open for anything and is one of the best completely player run games on the planet.
Faces of Mankind - Same deal as roma victor no leveling, Completely player run economy. The weapons in this futuristic game are actually created by players that choose to become Gun Smiths, all other Items are created by players of there proffesion. Doctors are actuall players, The leaders of the citys, factions, planets are actuall players allowing for an interactive game play. If the leader doesnt wanna comply you might choose to overthrow him, having to plan how to kill his bodyguards which by the way are real people once again. The complete world is created by people for people, the rules ingame are created by people. Want to become president of a planet, leader or financial advisor of a faction or maybe take over the economy of this game go ahead because everything that you can do in the real world you can do in this game.
Tabula Rasa- Looks very promising and looks like it will not be based on leveling not sure though. I hope I helped out ;-) Tell me if you like the game.
(1) you might hit maximum level 20 pretty soon, but character development starts there as you only know a handfull of skills and still have to earn the rest. If you are the kind of guy that has the compulsion to learn every skill there is in GuildWars on one character, then good luck, you just signed your souls over to ArenaNet.
(2) PVP is very player skill based as you cannot gain an advantage by either having more levels or better equipment than your opponent. you can also "only" bring 8 skills into a match. whether you win is determined by your skill to choose and execute the "build" (selection of eight skills) you made. Should you find out that your choice sucks, you can freely redistribute all attribute points at any town or outpost. skills have to be unlocked first, though you might find yourself in a little, but benign, grind situation here.
Even if you only want to kill monsters, you will find out that the most recent Guild Wars: Nightfall will kick your booty when played under the premise that maximum level and equipment were enough. They are not, you don't have a good gameplan, you die.
