Tired of WoW? Differences

etlaretlar Member UncommonPosts: 863

I´ve been  wow player since launch, though i have visited other "worlds" as well in the meantime, to mention a few:

EVE

EQ2

SWG pre ngo and after

now, ive been playing the classic warhammer games for some years, and just love  ém , but in regards to MMo´s

i have some difficulty seeing the difference between WoW and WAR, (i dont play wow anymore btw)

So, if someone could be as kind as to mention what would make the difference between these 2 games, i would be honored,

since i seem to miss the point.., since  what i have seen it is very similar to WoW (sadly), but perhaps i havent seen

enough ;)

Kind regards Etlar

ps: Some spelling issues..

Try the TOP post which is stickified on this site. And read the official FAQ linked in the very same post. Pretty much EVERYTHING you'll need to know.

There's been many threads on this very subject, one is currently listed right under this one.

However, to nutshell things (IMO) it comes down to this.  WOW is a game that was designed with a end game heavily focused on PVE raiding (a la EQ) and the preparation to complete such raids. (keying, factions, potions, etc).  Pvp is more of an afterthought, and mostly confined to controlled combat areas (BG's) unless you play on a PvP server..and even there..the incentive to fight each other really just isn't there.

Warhammer Online is being designed around PVP (actually called RvR) combat (a la DAOC).  They have promised us that if you wanted to you could level up to the top strictly by Pvping...(though it will be more efficient to do a blend of Pvp and Pve).  People can also level up on Pve alone..but that's not really encouraged in the games design.

There's a lot more differences than this of course...but I think this fundamental change in the end game design is what really sets the two games apart.   Just like DAOC and EQ are not the same , neither is WOW and Warhammer Online.

Kyleran, I most truly do appreciate the response, itis well articulated and well backed, i believe you are right,

sadly though, i have still to try a RvR game, but im looking forward to trying it, especially since thats apparently a difference

from the the almost classic by now, WoW.

Thank you, for the reply, Sir :)

I don't think that there's any other games than daoc usinf RvR-system. RvR is Mythic's trademark so I think that no other companies than Mythic can use that system.

Hardly, try joining a 0.0 Alliance in EvE or playing Shadowbane. RvR is just a continuation on PvP that involves significant player numbers and the incentives to accomodate.

Why be sad lol DAOC has a free trail runing all the time. You can try DAOC and then you have an idea how it works-RVR.

Isn't a big difference the general theme of the game?

I mean every fantasy rpg game is reallly a clone of fantasy liturature, so in a sense they are all the same.

If its wasn't for Tolkien, would fantasy games look the way they do now?  Probobly not.

The lore of both games is different.

The way they are supposed to be played is different with the RVR content on in each area suggesting that you should really take part in the war around you as opposed to WOW where you like others have said, are working to an end game raid and pushing the story forward.

I think thats something WOW players forget becuase of the non-stop drive to getting raid gear.  Remembering back to when I played, I never pvp'd, I was interested in the unfolding story before me.  Everything seemed to be pointing towards the "great unkown threat"  which to me was Slithus and the Plague Lands.

I think one of the most interesting differences between the two games  will be the Public Quest system being implemented in WAR.

The idea that you can just walk into an area and suddenly become part of a large raid against a giant or some other boss-type mobs sounds really great.

WoW tried to do something like it in certain quests the Stitches encounter in Duskwood and that's always great fun getting together in an impromtu pack to take him down.  In fact you always find people trying to gather together whenever there's the announcement that Stitches has been spawned. I really don't know why we don't see more of those kind of entertaining quests in the game.   They're very fun and make you feel like your part of the server community.

But you're still not really rewarded for killing Stitches unless you're grouped and one of the first ones to tag him.   I really like the idea that I can have fun in that kind of encounter in a WAR Public Quest and STILL get some form of XP or reward for participating.

It also sounds like a really great way to build the community on the server and meet other players.

Having these types of encounters reward everyone who participates and your faction as a whole is exactly what is needed.

Now they're not just interesting, they're meaningful.

It's wonderful when game mechanics can be used to encourage behavior which makes sense in the game universe.  Hopefully it'll mean less of this....

"Help!  NPC Terror #342 is terrorizing the countryside!"

"actually i'm on the next part of that quest tell me when u finish k?  ur a healer right?"

....and more like, hordes of players running around beating up on any threat, NPC or otherwise.

Thanks for the very interesting info, the public quest system definetely seems attractive.

and a quick remark here to hatetank :  i love the way you just described the  " and hey, youre a healr right?" part,

that is exactly my experience from wow, except i was a tank ;)

I do still have a ton of questions, but let me just ask 1 instead; were do you guys get all that info about the game,?

i have checked the official site, but i cant seem to find that kind of information, perhaps i just havent checked all these forums here

out enough, or, as we say in denmark, i cant see the trees because of the forrest ;)

btw: thanks for all the replies :)

Some of us are a bit obsessive compulsive when it comes to new information, and we read all interviews and previews that are released.

Best source of information for a beginner is the Sticky thread right here on this forum.  Tons of useful videos.  You can also check out the Newletter Archives on the official forum, the FAQ grab bag, and the links to Press Coverage.  Most interviews and previews are listed there.

And if you are feeling adventurous, go to Youtube.com and do a search for "Warhammer Online" or "Paul Barnett", and you'll find plenty of interviews there.

    Seriously.
