The games they make vary, from MMORPG`s and Arcade Racing to Sports Simulation and FPS. The main thing these games all have in common is that they are F2P and upgrades can be bought outright or take tens to hundreds of hours to acquire. If people pay real money they can get better items many of which have advertisements already attached E.g. A Pepsi flag added to ones car to boost some attribute as in Kart Rider or items that are advertisements themselves, E.g. accurate looking and named guns as in sudden attack.
OMG I want to pay $2 for the Tampax Muffler on my GTR.
World of warcraft opened the mmorpg scene to loads of new players who never knew about the existance of mmorpgs before.Since it got loads and loads of subscribers people who didn't game also got to"know" about mmorpgs since it was in allmost every news paper and tv show what WOW did on a worldscale.
So now you have all these people who get the impression that doing adds/commercials in mmorpgs will reach millions of people.Wich in fact we all know is mostly not the case. Now how should you do it?WoW is the biggest one but do you see a cardealer promoting a new type of car there? Now that would look silly and they should make the looks of the car cartoonish.Ok , so what to do then....mmm there is this mmorpg called second life wich basically is a copy of the reall world. In this we can promote our car and make it really look like the rl world model.I think that made the choice for second life for so many companies. The first ones attempting it get attention..the followers don't since it has been done before and only have the gamers themselves as "consumers" and this playerbase is just way to low for that , IF they even are interested in what is being sold.
I would suggest taking your boss through SL and show them what most of it is like. I am sure they will reconsider their interest in using it as a marketing strategy. And if not... I would wonder what your boss does on the weekends. *wink* *wink*

Before I played UO (and then EQ, etc, etc), I was an IRC rat, so I am not put off by the idea of something that is essentially a chat room with graphics or even whatever freaky, pervy behaviour that might go on there... The thing that gets me is that SL isn't even a very good venue. The LAG... OMG, THE LAG! I couldn't stand it long enough to even meet anyone. Things render slowly for me, and on top of that, a great deal of what's been built and put out there is crap, as far as I could tell from my short stay.
I don't hate sandbox games, and I don't hate "real life" style games, but I certainly hate SL. (So now you know my bias...)
What's got people all excited is that there have been a number of pieces in various media about people making money in SL (I read one in PCGamer, and I think I read one in... Wired? Something like that) plus further hype on it as some sort of revolutionary marketplace. I can tell you that if SL didn't run like crap in a toaster for me, and I were a regular user, I would be mighty unhappy if there were some kind of corporate tidal wave that washed over the world. I'd certainly be wanting to buy and build in some sort of themed, Real-Life-Commerce-Free zone.
I am sure there are a zillion people who love Second Life. Maybe the market is there. Maybe people will want to check out the Broyhill showroom, buy some virtual furniture and get information on getting the very same set for their First Life living room... Just because it's stupid doesn't mean people won't do it.
... This is where I draw the line: __________________.
1. I like games. To be a game it has to have some rules, and SL has none. Therefore, no game to play.
2. I HATE games where you have to buy things with rl money in the game. It's just annoying, and I don't want to be nickel and dimed to death. Give me a monthly subscription fee, and let me play as little or as much as I want without being bothered with payments for small items. In SL you have to either make stuff yourself (I'm not a modeler and don't want to be) or buy items from other "players". Meh.
3. There's plenty of porn on the internet. If I want porn I can just go to a porn site. I don't particularly care to run around looking like a fox with a tail and shag a racoon, or whatever it is the furries in SL are doing. Nothing against that, and they can "yiff" to their hearts content, just not my thing.
4. Lots of the SL content is made by the players. It's an established rule: 90% of player made content is crap.
I agree with many of the previous posters. SL is mostly hype. However, a hardcore group of misfits will keep the so-called game going for years to come.
Realistically, I can foresee corps creating marketing campaigns in SL, advertising the crud out of it, and having all of 3 people stop by to see what all the hype is about. After 2 weeks, the location of that "showroom" or whatever will be deserted. The IT person they had do this will think to themselves, "what a waste of time!". Of course that IT person probably found a new way to spend their weekends "hooking up".
Marketing needs to be forced on you, and in your face. Hell, if we could choose to skip watching commercials, you can bet your sweet bippy we would! Look at the current flack TIVO is getting.
So why would someone want to log into SL to see MORE commercials for some product they dont want? Ya, lemme hurry over to the new "Head and Shoulders" shampoo showroom so I can see the latest in dandruff removal. Just lemme finish up with this furry first.
Seriously though, I dont think SL has the audience these execs thinks it has. Its not a game, its just a graphical chat room that gets boring after the first 10 minutes. I'd love to hear how the presenter is pitching SL in such a way for it to catch so much bigwig attention. <shrugs>
To the OP: I'd say tell your boss "It is something we should explore. I dont know how beneficial it will be for our future, but it is worth taking a look into" If nothing else, you get to spend a bit of time goofing around on company time. Your company is happy because it explored that as an option.
"...and with that cryptic comment, I'm off to bed!"
The world outside the Adult districts is a barren wasteland. Occasionally there is a meeting or a class going on, but the people participating go right to the meeting place and logout right afterwords.
Um, what about pirates? Ninja? Samurai? Victorian England? Cyberpunk sims? STEAMPUNKS?! Racing? Skating? Nothin barren bout all that.
Yeah, you could spend five minutes in SL and see ALOT of porn and casinos and garbage. Especially if you're new. But if you try the search button and type in something you like, you'll find that too.
They came from the sea and they came from the sky, Captain America is going to die!

Sure... you can find just about anything in SL... and it will usually be empty, or occupied by perverts. The simple fact is... if you log into SL, and wonder just a little bit... you will find something humping something else.
So why would someone want to log into SL to see MORE commercials for some product they dont want? Ya, lemme hurry over to the new "Head and Shoulders" shampoo showroom so I can see the latest in dandruff removal. Just lemme finish up with this furry first.
QFE!! Greslore FTW!!
I nearly showered my monitor with the coffee I was drinking when I read the furry part... lol
I don't wonder too much bout one thing humping another. If these things want too, go for it. It's mostly obvious noobs/alts that do that anyway, so it just looks silly at best.
When trying to sink a ship, pixel sex isn't on my mind.
I'm not sayin 'Hey everyone, play SL!' It's not for everyone, some people need rules.

I never really concentrated on the pixel-sex either, but it does sort of get all over everything. But to get back to the topic at hand... I don't see SL as a vaible marketing tool for anyone... with the possible exception of porno.
Yes, a terrible idea. The residents, I'd think wouldn't appreciate it and it'd be a big waste of money for the corporations. Not that I care about that last bit, but I'm sure they do')
Generally advertising lets me know what NOT to buy.
EDIT: Idea! A lot of gamers play SL, obviously, tho half wouldnt call it a game, anyway, game companies could advertise and it might pay off.
Like, free (videogame charactername)'s guns/avatar/whatever when you purchase Resident Evil 15!
