First off, I first played EverQuest for roughly 4 years back in its glory days but left after I saw the population of the completely disband into other games. I played WoW for like a year and a half and while the first time 1-60 was pretty fun, it was just repetitive end game dungeon grinding after that. I've been off of WoW for almost a year now and am now considering returning. I should make note that this is just a temporary MMO, I do not plan to play for more than 7 months (until Age of Conan is released). I have friends who play WoW which may be the only thing luring me to it but I really do miss the overall gameplay of EverQuest which I felt is the best of any MMO. But of course the community is an issue as maybe only 10% of the population is left and the majority appear to be end game players which newbie zones left as ghost towns.
So what would you guys suggest? Please give an explanation to whichever you recommend, thanks.

That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!

Society: Reaching new lows every day.
BUT, for casual WoW might be the way to go, it is always popualted in all level areas (some more then others), but the community is roughly the age range of 6-13 (no eairly puberty in these cases). Again, sence you have friends you can dodge the other players a little easier. EQ might still be a "core" game at the end if you get there before the 7 months are up (I'm sure you would may times over) but from what I hear low level zones are dead.
Imo, go for WoW even though I hate it, WoW is a better pick for "pick-up put-down" then EQ.
Essentially, although not as clean, I played Everquest (without canceling) then DaoC (cancelled) then WoW (cancelled) then Vanguard (cancelled after a month). I had a total of 11 max level characters with various class and race combinations. However, I had three accounts for many reasons. I returned to Everquest again more full-time than usual with the progression servers, and it turned out to be a monumental mistake after a month. The zerg (or "uber") guilds rushed content and expansion releases. It was a great concept to have progression servers, and I had a total blast with friends leveling in the old world, but the expansions released too fast. When Gates of Discord was released on progression, as I had with my other servers, I effectively quit. Gates of Discord is a great example of forced-zerg-raiding that no one likes, neither the "hardcore" nor "casual" gamers liked Gates of Discord (you will obviously find some people in both camps that maybe did, but I have not found one).
I would suggest you give Everquest a try, but it was great in its proper context. I mean to say, it was great for its time. Today, with advances in technology, innovative concepts, developments, and so-forth... Everquest is not a good game. Nevertheless, you of course could try it for yourself. I am downloading Everquest 2 right now to try it.
I know what WoW is about already and it'd be tough for me to get back even with my friends there. I am looking for a casual friendly game with as little repetitive gameplay as possible.
However, the end-game is forced-raiding and things, so this game is probably not viable for me; I did that forced raiding stuff, in some ways had fun and others did not, years ago. However, if you find that appealing, give it a try.
If I had to choose, as an EQ vet of nearly 8 years, suggest WoW for gameplay, new gaming dynamics, abilities, opportunities to play, and so on and so forth. WoW is superior to EQ.
Out of all the current MMOs id say WoW is the best for casual play till something better comes out for example warhammer i think AOC will flop but thats just me. ALot of promising mmos are comming and currently WoW has the throne but everything comes to a end. So what iam saying is go with WoW right now it is really ALOT more fun and noob friendly then EQ is or any of these older mmos out right now.
WoW is a blast it just can get tedious for players who have been at end game for a while. WoWs end game can lack but the game in a whole is ALOT of fun.
not really what you asked for but
I would suggest you check out a trial for EQ II
EQ is quite dated now and a lot different to the game it was. So would probably say WoW or Lotr Online or Vanguard? (Hypocritically though, I maybe buying anniversary edition in a month.:P)
Well personally I wouldn't get either one. I personally Hate SOE cause they flat out wouldn't know how to make a good RPG if it bit them in the tail end. However I don't know much about EQ2 but I still wouldn't recommend it.
WoW is great till you get to the level cap then it's a Raid sink. If you like spending all your time going for Uber gear and Raiding then WoW is a great game. It does not take long to reach the level cap, id say you could hit 70 in a few short weeks depending on how much time you have to play. I gave up WoW cause I was unable to do the raid content due to my playing time. I found there was nothing to do, PvP is a frigen joke and is flat out boring cause it's all instance and thus making it to predictable.
In short I wouldn't recommend either one. I would go with City of Hero. It's a well polished game, you can solo most of it, find groups when needed. Its not a raid sink like EQ and WoW. The game play is pretty addictive as well.
Right now there is just nothing out or will becoming out that is worth really playing, I myself have been sticking to single player games.
I suggest you try the trial.
I might buy EQ 2, as I really enjoy it, the world feels alives, I like the old EQ 1 themes and names and so forth. However, there are several attractive games in development that I will watch for a bit before I make a purchase.
Good luck!
