I would imagine you can, how else would you get the materials to craft a set of armor or help build structures? I mean yes lol. I will try to find some information for you on world size.
From what we know, it should be about as big, but you should know that the world is not seamless. In WOW you can run in most cases from one end to another without ever hitting a loading screen. Here the graphics level is way too high to allow that, so there will be definate bounduaries between zones.
There will be some method for gathering resources such as ore and lumber, but as far as we know its not a profession.
No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee. Hemingway

Well abit of good news on that front would be if you had Vista this has programme that sections off a part of your hard drive for programmes like games that require alot of loading this way your not waiting very long in loading times whether that be loading the game or waiting to go to a diffrent part of the world, also through DX10 this will allow times to be reduced even more because they should already be loaded, but you will have to splash out on an 8800 to get a DX10 compatible card., but if ya rich why wait
Why wait? Maybe because by October those DX cards will only cost $200?

The gameworld has been stated at over 130'000 acres and counting thats about 203 square miles. Some people have estimated WoW at being 80 square miles. Although what we dont know yet is hows much of this area is accessible, and quest / mission size and content.
The CES demo placed the player in a jungle environment; just a small bit of the over 500 square kilometers that can be explored in Age of Conan – 2nd paragraph down.
I guess I can be happy about the shear size of the world. I'm just worried that it is just stupid large wastelands of nothingness. I hope that all the zones are big and full of things to do. Big and nothing just gets annoying. When its big and full of a beautiful environment with interesting things and areas to explore, then you can boast a huge world and catch my attention.

Thats a valid concern, but none of the areas they have shown so far look remotely lacking in content. Just have a look through the screenshots page on community.ageofconan.com

Bit head doing the math from acres to kilometres to square miles might wanna get an online conversion tool The WoW size blog is an interesting read though. So AoC has at the moment 30 regions with each being up to several square kilometers plus expansions in the future.
Thanks a lot. The sentence it's in kind of hurts though.
"The sheer size of the gameworld (over 130,000 acres and counting) means that Funcom haven’t spent as much time on the character design - the results of which are NPCs (and, presumably, potential human players) who look like they’ve been put together from a cardboard box and a couple of rolls of old duct tape."
I disagree if he's talking about graphically, but if they mean that there's a lack of variety, then I overly agree, and I know they've "said" the AI is great, and the variety is great, but they haven't "shown" either of those statements.
Good news on the world size though. I really like the size, but I think "content" (quests, and adventuring content) we'll still have to wait on. The zones may be huge, but there may only be a small part of that zone that you can actually walk in. I'm sure they're including the mountains, and scenery as part of that area, and from what we've seen of a few zones it looks like there are only certain areas you can walk in. It seems linear, and I'm hoping they release other zones that are more "explore at your own peril" rather than what they've shown in the fly-by vids and in the demos which is pretty much "follow the yellowbrick road."

Its going to be interesting how the land is going to be set out, because the screen shots of the land look incredible, but on the other hand they are going to have to have empty land so we can build player Cities, and there going to have to build more then enough land so we dont run out, bit like Tatooine in SWG, all i can say is from what we know of the game and the land its going to be something special.

Yes and no, the guild cities are going into specific zones. Land will have to be set aside for them yes, but none of it will be in the areas you would be randomly running through/ leveling/ questing in. And videos have shown that the city zones aren't exactly empty either.

I don't think the land for the guild cities is counted in the 130,000 acres or whatever the figure was, as well as where the player cities are. Since both of these are instanced, I doubt they're going to be adding this into the total area. I'm thinking this area is referring to PvE content only.

You poor poor thing. In the MMOG world WoW is the perfection of mediocrity. You have yet to see what a truly good MMOG will be like. WoW is a collection of gameplay mechanics from various other MMOGs, and then it dumbs them down (simplifies) them dramatically but polishes them to a nice shine. Note: this isn't a bash on WoW. IMHO it's the reason why it's so popular. But at the same time, the masses of new MMOG gamers that know only WoW have absolutely no clue just how good a MMOG can be!
From this I take it you enjoy crafting in WoW. If only you had an idea how basic and uninspired and fun-less WoW's crafting is compared to say the likes of old Star Wars Galaxies, which was vastly superior.
Hopefully AoC will open your eyes. I applaud you for asking about it. A lot of WoW's subscribers that are new to MMOG's *cough* the vast majority of WoWs player base *cough* just take WoW as the best at everything and never look beyond it.
What WoW does, it does great. But if you take each of it's polished parts and separate them (IE the crafting, the PvE, the PvP, the social systems, etc) you'll find that by themselves, they pale compared to many other MMOGs. It's only when these generic systems are brought together and polished up that one fails to notice how base everything is.
As you'll see once AoC comes out. I agree the only thing why so many people play WoW is because it is so simple the whole idea is to quest and Grind which to someone who have been playing MMO's for a while will see so many major flaws in the gameplay for instance the bordom is unbelievable, theres no player Cities the guild only only has a name above your had no land to claim your own, the graphics are poor they make it look cartoony so low end systems can play it but it really dosnt do MMO's any favours at all (just abit of eye candy really) - very disappointed as far as MMO's go with WoW

I don't know if its counted or not towards the total land area, I was just pointing out that we won't be running through stark empty areas, flash by a few free standing player cities, and then move through some more empty areas, like what can be seen on Tattooine in SWG.

I'm so glad you made the comparision to SW Galaxies! That was my first MMO (started week one) Since then, I'v been looking for another game to match it. Sure the graphics were not that great (scenery) But look at how old it is now. What it did offer, IMHO, is still about the best all around MMO I've seen. (I am talking about in the begining) From crafting to Guilds, houses to cusimization, leveling and skills. I remember walking through a crowded town and recognizing friends beacuse of the level of charactor design.
Anyway, AoC is looking like the game with the chance to be a great one. Guess we'll see
the only mmorpg i have played was WoW. will aoc be as big?
i like gathering ore and skinning animals to make money. can we do this in aoc?
First of all, I'd like to say how sorry I feel for you. If WOW is the only game you have played then you have never actaully played an mmorpg. WOW is really a small world, the reason it seems large is movement is so incredibly slow it makes it seem as if the world is large.
Again, as far as crafting goes, you've been misled. The difference between crafting in WOW and pretty much any other game is unbelievable. Crafting in WOW is like being spoonfed baby food. Crafting in many other games you get a plate full of steak, taters and veggies, ya cut it up and eat it yourself.
Do yourself a favor, pickup another game, any game and try it so you can understand what a mmorpg is supposed to be. Even, (shudder) DnL has slightly more content than WOW.
i agree compared to most of the mmo's i have played wow was the easiest
what they did worked and gave you alot of basic things to do but the max lvl was too easy to reach and im sure most other ppl who played wow would know what its like max lvl jumping around in circles on the bank roof in org *yawn*
Yes i agree totally with every single comment people in this forum make. Wow as i have experienced has no depth to it. Pushing buttons to do things sucks, and although you will push buttons in AOC it will be much more immersive, not to mention the graphics will be SO much better than wow that, if you have grown up with WoW your whole life and play this game, you might just have a seizure. And i think the only reason wow has so many subscribers is because it is the "tickle me elmo" of the mmorpg, it's basic, kids like to play ewh it, and it doesn't require much thought to operate. In fact, Age Of Conan is going to be my first mmorpg that i will actually pre order, if it is available. It is just that good.
Q: Roughly how big is this world and is it seamless, or will players zone from one area to the next? Are there level restrictions on the zones? Does the game feature invisible walls, or will players be able to explore almost every inch of the world?
Gaute: “Age of Conan – Hyborian Adventures feature three countries at launch, Cimmeria, Aquilonia and Stygia. Howard’s Hyborian World of 10,000 BC is a massive, massive universe. We could probably build a whole game with 10 expansion packs only from Aquilonia if we wanted to. We have tried to focus on the regions most meaningful to the Conan fans, typically those visited by Conan in the most famous stories (but not exclusively so).
“The world is not seamless. To keep the game true to the lore, there is a small or big journey between the different regions by boat or horse, etc. This also works well with our technology that is not seamless. Naturally with the more than 100 books published in the more than 70 years since Howard wrote his first stories, it is impossible to let the players explore every inch of the world. This is though, without a doubt, the truest, deepest and most immersive representation of Hyboria done in any computer game ever.”
I can't wait for other area's to be available too - “Age of Conan – Hyborian Adventures feature three countries at launch, Cimmeria, Aquilonia and Stygia." Those are such small but very important area's in Hyborian Lore, to have the game expand into other area's whets the appetite even more!
