Would you play EQ1 if ( for EQ1 fans only)...

Would you play EQ1 If they released the original game but with updated graphics and sounds?

Obviously a few other tweaks would be necessary to limit the bugs, fix up the UI a bit etc. They would probably have to make a complete list of new items and alter some enemies and such to keep it fresh. It would probably be a good idea to have the dungeon layouts and some of the zones changed slightly (ie. just shifting locations of things and such) to give a reason to explore it all again too. Overall it would be same game though. Kunark and perhaps even Velious would be the only expansions and they would get the same treatment when released.

Would you play it? I know I would go back to a pvp server again in a heartbeat and if they didn't offer one I would still play a regular server.

So many of these new games (and EQ with all its later expansions and EQ2 as well) just well, for lack of a better term, try "too hard". It's the simple things that made EQ (and UO) so appealling. Having Kelethin so perfectly suited as a place to auction your items and interact with players... just beautiful even if it was unintended. Being forced to group to get anywhere decent and having combat slow enough you felt compelled to talk to your groupmates seemed to suck at the time but in hindsight I miss it now. Having memorable items and items that were meaningful, rare and difficult to achieve gave you something to strive for. Having a huge variety of spells, including "utility" spells that had limited value but allowed for creative players to create unintended uses for them, new tactics or simply have fun with them. Having zone-wide discussions and chats with other players... you just don't see this anymore. I could go on like this but I don't want this to get too long.

Don't get me wrong. I still despise EQ for its major faults (the importance of raiding stands out most of all) but I miss the simple things it did right and so many games seem to miss out on now. If I were in-charge I would scrap EQ2 soon and with only limited investment would update EQ1 and probably have more subscribers. It would cost little in comparison to making a whole new game and would probably do pretty well.

A few things of what you are saying goes for the gaming community themselves. The fact that people don't stop to "talk" amongst one another and basically hang out in certain areas is because the community themselves have forgotten what mmorpgs are about. When mmorpgs where launched people where amazed at the fact that you could game with people from all over the world in the same gaming enviremont.People chatted just because they could....now everyone thinks it is not more then common that you can interact with players. So you get people only interacting for the need of it like in reall life.Ow i need a sword....mmm hey weaponsmith make me a sword.I need a group to level ME up..mm hey guys group me but pls don't talk to much in the chat i am watching tv in the meantime.

A real EQ2, yes. Or EQ revamped as a single player rpg.(though yet to try champions of Norrath to see what that is like)

EverQuest had its place for me. When I left Ultima Online I decided to play EQ because my friend and his family and friends played.  I had a pretty decent experience, but the game was only good for the span that it was the only choice.

The ways in which you suggest changing EQ would ultimately make EQ into an EQ 0.5.

You do bring up an interesting point, though.  A lot of games have failed to create the same atmosphere EQ did.  I can remember direct lore and zones from the game because the lore and zones were very unique and interesting.  I still wouldn't want to replay it.

I think the lack of communication in newer games also has a lot to do with the amount of downtime players experience.  In EQ I spent a lot of time bandaging and sitting down.  When I was doing these things I had a better opportunity to chat within /ooc.  If I got into a good XP group in EQ I spent very little time talking.  The pulls went so fast that I didn't have time to talk.  In WoW everything is super speed and everyone is trying to level/grind/farm in a worthwhile fashion.

Plus, with WoW I spend more time talking in guild because the general chats for each zone are basically dead and the players find banter annoying if anything.

Hell yes!  I would play a single player version of EQ.   I know this sounds crazy but imagine if you could control 6 characters (You and 5 CPU characters).   The cool thing is you eliminate the aggrevation of grouping with idiots,   you eliminate the people who go "AFK wife wants sex,   pizza starting fire in oven - gotta go!"

All it takes is advanced programming where you can control every little strategy the CPU characters could use.  I mean seriously,  how hard was it for a rogue in EQ ...get behind mob and spam backstab,  if you get agro then use evasion or whatever - simple.

Actually I would play a single player EQ too. They would probably have to drastically reduce the original xp curve though for that though.

Anyway I am just so sick of these ultra fast paced MMO's where you spam hotkeys non-stop, run around for hours to all the quest npcs each level and then run around zones completing them. This is all in an attempt to reduce the "grind" that we had in EQ. A noble idea but it indirectly has ruined any sense of community, the social aspect etc.

I remember back when you would interact so much you would know the key characters on your server and many memorable others. Now I couldn't name a single character on most of my servers unless I am in the same guild (and even then I can't name half my guildmates anymore).  I also remember really getting to know some of the players in the game. I have no intention of meeting these people in RL but it made you care about them and their character. You cared if they did well, got that item or level etc. Their was an attachment to them that is very hard to get in the games I have played lately.

I agree J.  I'm not sure if we will ever get that kind of community again with games being so easy nowdays.

No. I love the gameplay. I've raided through Dreadspire and beyond. I have no problem with the graphics.

The only reason I'm not playing it now is that the game requires too much time in one sitting to be useful. I just don't have 2+ hours of completely uninterrupted time to dedicate to a game like this, and anything less than 2+ hours in EQ is usually time wasted.

In a heartbeat... as long as the community is back to like 2-3k people per server.

That would be one of my requirements as well, much less time-intensivity.
