with Star Wars I got about 120 000 000 hits

    and Star Trek 35 800 000 hits

How popular it will be will depend how good it is. See for instance, Matrix Online.

um Science fiction on tv being your favored story line...

though if I'm stuck with tv I'd have to say the first or second season of stargate.  and the new battlestar galatica.

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

I've always been a fan of Trek so it gets my #1 vote.

Star Trek has alot of potential as a mmorpg

They just screwed up Star War Galaxies

Honestly?  I think the Star Trek crowd and the MMO crowd have sharp division.  I don't see Star Trek being a very desirable place for people who want to kill bad guys.

Other Sci-Fi titles fit themselves more to the MMO genre (I think Stargate is an excellent idea).

I love Stargate, it has the advantage of being set in a familiar setting, 'Present day' (with a twist)

I am a Trek fan so it gets my vote for sure. As far as teh MMO goes...if they do it right it will go far. I agree SG has it's advantages, but STO gives you the added advantage of endless technology options as well as Starship command! I mean really who wouldn't want to run thier own Starship?!!?

Star Trek is among my favorite sci-fi genres, but it isn't my number one favorite.  I've always found Trek enjoyable and entertaining, but traditionally Trek has been lacking in two key areas:  Plot and Character Growth, at least when compared to other sci-fi genres.  I would rate B5 as my all time favorite sci-fi genre.

In any case, regarless of how people rate it among their favorite sci-fi genres, Trek is popular.  But being popular doesn't mean the MMO will be successful.  MxO was a disaster and it was based off of the very popular genre of sci-fi the Matrix.

My main concern with ST:O is that in order for the MMO to be appealing to MMO gamers it is going to have to be considerably different than most fans idea of true Star Trek canon.  Peace and Exploration don't fit the typical MMO mold.  Plus Trek games are historically quite bad anyway, and even the ones that are good typically don't sell well anyway.  The trend of poor Trek games continues right up to present with Star Trel Legacy, which despite being designed by Bethesda the company behind Elder Scrolls, was still complete crap.  I would like to see STO do well, but I don't have high hopes for it.

Star Wars by a country mile - it has Jedi (and damned near everyone wants a glowstick), it has a well-developed lore and system of 1- and 2-man fighters, and the potential is more broad than Star Trek.  Star Wars wasn't just the Imperials and the Rebels, either - you had the bounty hunters with no affiliation other than themselves, the smugglers and criminals, etc.  This universe has lots more than just the Empire/Alliance dichotomy.

Star Trek has some potential, but remember, you'll be in Starfleet - a military organization in which you are a cog a usually not the top dog.  A lot of people don't like taking orders.  What are we going to do - pull out the old "the static is horrible, you're breaking up sir, so I'm going to go do what ever I want yet again" excuse every mission?  And except for the combat-themed away missions, what kind of mission would be exciting?  Think about all those Trek episodes where someone does some cool technical innovation to save the show - how the hell do you pull that off in an MMO?!?!  You don't, that's how, at least not in a convincing and engaging manner.  Most of the stuff Geordi/Wesley/Scotty/Jadzia did won't translate well.  And who's going to want to RP Counselor Troi - you know, the one who tells us they sense hostility from the aliens while the battle klaxons blare and the ship is rocked by weapons fire.  Friggin' useless, Troi was.  On comparison, I am concerned that Star Trek, while a great TV franchise (I loved DS9, still my fav TV series of all time) I just don't know how well it will translate into an MMO.  I will probably try it, and I will watch the development when/if they ever start releasing substantive information, but I gotta admit there is a lot to the TV Star Trek that they will not be able to capture in an MMO.  While it does have them, Star Trek isn't nearly as strong in the 1- and 2-man fighters in the space combat role (who wants to pull out that Danube-class shuttle?!?!?!).  They'll have to invent a lot more in the realm of space combat than Star Wars had to.

As for the other franchises - B5 would be interesting but suffers from many of the same probs as Star Trek (notably there is too much in the way of military organization)- that, and it's bound to the B5 station itself, most of us like to explore more.  At least Star Trek was all about going new places.  B5 suffers in this way.  Stargate - well, honestly I could never stomach this one - as an archaeologist, I found the basic principle of the show ludicrous and could never get through an episode.  I'm told it's a good show though, so who knows.

Star Trek MMO will do fine for the mid 20 and up crowd, because we grew up with it. The cocnern is the under 20 and beyond. Not much going in the Tv series or movies. Youngsters may soon grow up not knowing who Captain Kirk or Spock were! (Blasphemy!)

A few Star Trek Next generation reruns on some cable channels and SciFi picked up Star Trek : Enterprise, but thats about it. I remember in my high school/ college days there wasn't an evening where there was a Star trek episode running.

That being said, a Star Trek MMO should do fine, still a large fanbase out there. As long as Perpetual doesn't stray too far from the IP and keep fans happy.
