Possible return?

Ok so I left this game about 2 years ago (had a 34BLM/17WHM on Odin when I left).  However, due to a retardedness on my part, i was still paying for it until last month...I know shut up don't even bring it up, it's fixed.  Anyways, I started up an MMO blog with my friend (link below...hehe shameless plug) and I want to give it a fair chance before I review it.  It was my first MMO and I remember loving it.  So I'm downloading the updates for the game right now and was just wondering if it would be possible for me to get back into the groove of things or will people get pissy at me because I don't know how to play the game anymore?  It's been a really long time since I played and since then I've gotten used to the WoW style which I know is NOT how FFXI plays.  Do you guys think this would be a problem?

Hi Benhamie , sorry for your "whoops" regarding your sub status ;p but now would be the best time to resubscribe SE did a mass-ban of 7000 accounts of RMT's and cheaters so now across all servers FFXI's economy is now stable , makeing FFXI        *gasp*

enjoyable! instead of korean farm work like it's known to as most , although there is still grinding to be done just not as much.

Check www.ffxiah.com to see for yourself. :)

No matter what complainers on forums tell you FFXI is not dyeing SE still holding on a constant 500k subs.

And there still updating the game with new items and quests to many to mention , i;ve just resubscribed myself after quiting in '05.

I really wasn't worried about the economy as much as I was people being pissed off that a 34 doesn't know how to play his class...do you guys think this'd be an issue or am I just being paranoid?

To my experience, I would say that this mostly depends on you. If there are issues on how to play the job (classes are called jobs in FFXI), then either check websites, or ask other players.

    Best website, imho is: http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org

If you ARE doing something wrong in a party, and gets comments about this, be polite and ask for hints/help. If you get worked-up over such issues, everyone gets mad and you will be kicked. There will be a good chance that one of your party members is a high-lvl in the same job as you are currently playing - such ppl can either be very helpful or completely arrogant bastards. But in my experience, most ppl in FFXI are very mature and polite, though not everyone, of course. Most ppl WILL try to help you if you just ask, politely. Do not be afraid to admit that you are unsure about certain issues.

It's a real "must" that you know how to use macros, so if you forgot, make sure to refresh your knowledges on this - it's not hard. Don't forget to set some healer macros, cause it's possible you will be expected to backup-heal. And, as lvl 34 - do not join a party wearing lvl 11 equip or something like that. You WILL make ppl mad, and it would be a miracle if you don't get kicked. It's your duty to at least try to be well prepeared.

You are a lvl 34 BLM/WHM. The most important for you in a party, is NOT to burn off every spell fastest possible. This will make it impossible for the tank to hold hate, and you will get attacked, and it's very possible that neither the tank or the healer will not be able to save you, which again can cause a full wipe. You would also have to heal A LOT between (or during) battles, which is not good at all. Also, make sure that you and any other mages in the party, aggrees on what kinds of debuffs you should cast. Example: you casting bio and the whm casting dia is a waste of mp - one of these will remove the other. And NEVER leave town without a couple of stacks of Ginger Cookies. Use one each time you sit down to heal. You can in fact use these all the way up to lvl 75. And if you can afford it, try to get equip with INT buffs, which is the most important one for a BLM.

If there is something else you wanna know, just ask in this thread or make a new one. I'll check back and try to answer if there's something you need help with. Good luck, and welcome back to FFXI

TY for the help!  I remember trying to get good gear before I left so I doubt I'll have lvl 11 gear lolz but yeah I'll make sure.  Also, I learned early on that nuking the crap out of something is not always the best solution...a habit that has followed me into other MMO's haha.  In fact, there has been a lot about FFXI that has rubbed off on me when I'm playing other MMO's that people didn't understand sometimes haha (FFXI was my first).  But yes I'm looking forward to playing again...updates taking forever...  When I get in I'll try to mess with the macro system but does anyone have any tips on good macros for BLMs?  TY again for the help!

Np at all, glad you liked my post :)

"Universal" macro example, and make sure you type with no errors:

First line: /p Whatever text you want your party to see (use autotranslate if you insert spell names, so all can understand). Some mages uses party info for everything, but note that too much info can be annoying.

Second line: /ma "Spell-name" <t>                 Note: You MUST type spell name in this line (no autotranslate), and it MUST be between ""

Example, and words underlined are available from autotranslate:

    /p Casting spell ~~> Blizzard <t>

    /ma "Blizzard" <t>

    What this does:

/p will only tell party what you are writing after it, it will not trigger anything, it's only for info/party-chat

/ma stands for Magic Ability, and must be the start of all spell-casting command lines. <t> is the mob (or player) you have as target when casting the spell. Note that <t> in a info line (ex: after /p), will automaticly tell the name of the player or the mob you're targeting.

A little list over different switches and such in macros:

    • /p -- Party chat info, all party members will see the text followed
    • /echo -- Only you will see the text after this command, no one else. I mainly use them for spell cool-down timers
    • /wait xx -- xx will do a pause in xx seconds before executing next line in the macro
    • /ma -- Magic Ability, as said above. Must be used as command for all spells.
    • /ja -- Job Ability. Ie "2-hour" commands, like Benediction for WHM
    • /ws -- Weapon Skill. Important to have some info in such macros, imo, since 2 or more use WS in a row to do "Skill Chains"
    • <t> -- Target. The spell will land on the mob or player you have in target before hitting the macro.
    • <me> -- Spell will always land on yourself, ex: /ma "Cure II" <me>
    • <tp>, <hp> or <mp> to show TP, HP or MP. A healer should have an MP info macro, and melees should always have TP info macros.
    • etc... there are more, but this is enough for most ppl

I think those are the most important. Play around with macros to test, it may sound confusing for someone who's new to macros, but it's a very easy/logic system. I think that covers the most important. Spells for attacking mobs and curing party members are set up in the same way. Remember, if you're gonna heal, you can hit F1 - F6 to quick-target any party member, but don't be locked on to mobs in such cases. Before anyone else comments this: You *can* work around it if you are locked onto mobs, but it's not important for this post, since this is intended as a mini-faq.

I'll give one example of a little more "complex" macro. If you understand the info above, you should understand everything this one does, but I'll explain to be sure. Again, stuff you can use via autotranslate are underlined, and should always be used, since you may have Japanese or others in your party who doesn't understand English. This macro is for a WHM (BLMs rarely need complex macros) who's telling everyone to come close to receive buffs. Btw, you cannot have more than 6 lines in a macro.

    1. /p Please  Gather together ~~> Protect & Shell
    2. /wait 3
    3. /ma "Protectra" <me>
    4. /wait 10
    5. /ma "Shellra" <me>

This is what it does. (Info before each of the 2 spells isn't needed, since ppl knows what's coming, besides, you can't have 7 lines in a macro, and you can't combine switches beginning with "/" in the same command line.)

    1. Info only
    2. Wait 3 seconds for ppl to rush near you. 3 secs combined with casting time is more than enough, usually.
    3. Casting protectra, which gives protect to all party members near you
    4. Wait 10 secs from you START casing protectra till you start next spell. You can't, of course, cast next spell while you're doing the first.
    5. Casting shellra, giving shell to all party members near you.

Hope this is helpful for you, and again, just ask if you need more info - I'll answer if I can :)

Thanks for the refresher course.  Once I looked through that I started remembering about the macro system.  It's been a while since I played. I can't believe how much I forgot haha.   Anyways, yeah once this damn download finishes I'll get on and mess around with the macros.  TY for the help.
