Now I understand everyone has differant tastes, I for one enjoy the look of this game even though I have not played it, I have seen the videos and etc. Now I hear its alot like wow but I like certain elements of wow, I honestly dont expect anything extremly new for a while. So im asking do you think I will like this game if I liked eq1 eq2 and wow? I just didnt like the hardcore playing of all the games and the community of wow. Another possibility is alot of people always look for the negative in games and fail to see the positive so maybe its just them.

Download it for the 4/6 Open Beta and try it yourself... you'll have until the 24th I think to play for free.  That's really the best way to find out.

It's good. Just not enough new stuff to keep me intrested. Shame really because the lore and graphics are very beautfiul. Maybe when the expansion comes out!

I have tried the game and it's been over a month since I went back to it.  I have been playing WoW and LOTRO is somewhat similar.  For me, LOTRO is an ok game; that's performance, graphics, and game play.  I think I'll still stick to WoW longer, movement and doing things in WoW seems better to me.  But that is my opinion.

So there already making an expansion? Is it free or do you have to buy it?
  • whitedelightwhitedelight Member Posts: 1,544

While I will not be sticking around for this games launch I was one of the lucky few who got it beta test it from the very beginning. It is amazing to see the game grow, day after day. It is amazing to know that some of my suggestions on quests and respawn rates were listened to in more than one situation and I feel that Turbine truly valued my opinion and time.

The game itself does not really lack any content as there is always something to do.  A true hardcore gamer will find things to do no matter what you throw in front of him, he will find new ways to challenge himself. At the same time, the casual players is a winner in this game too because you will neither get left behind in levels or in crafting. Everyone wins. Not only this but to prove that Turbine in listening they removed their clause that said EU players will not play with NA players. So now everyone can play with everyone.

I took two characters to level 38 during the beta and did not get to see end game raid style content but I did have things to do at all times. If you buy this game chances are you will like it. You would have to be looking for things to not like, or knit pick to not be able to enjoy this game.

Just my opinions from a beta tester from the start of the non family member phase. Take it for what it is worth.

They will be working on expansion after expansion because they are trying to cover the lore in all of the books and at the same time work on creating a story for what happened to the north. The reason being is that you continue the story from the books in your quests, but at the same time they are creating new in game lore so that people who know all about LOTR will still see new things.

Turbine has announced that they already have plans for 5+ expansions and outlines as to what they will entail. They have also stated that they will offer periodic content every 2 months or so. Now, if you have not played AC1, the periodic content probably doesn't mean much to you. If Turbine stays true to AC1, which they have given no indication that they won't, then that content, which is free, will consist of content on the level that EQ2 has made you pay for so far. Probably after 1 or 1 1/2 years they will introduce the first pay for expansion. There is no official word on what it will be, but many signs point to Rohan.

To recap on my post, I remember how it was like for my first MMO.  The Matrix Online was my first, I got it the day it was released and I truly did love the game play.  It was hard through all the bugs and more bugs they introduced to the game and lag was real bad at times when 20 or more people was in the same area, and that was when we weren't fighting.  When the game was turned over to SOE, it really went downhill from there.

The release of CR2 had made most of the people to leave the game and a lot of people left before that point.  The main reason I left the game, my friends left the game and it just wasn't the same anymore.  That right there told me that friendships and community is what helps to keep the game alive.  There are a few people left but not that many, in fact, when SOE took over, the number of servers went down at least by half so more people will be on the same server.

Now I feel I typed enough about MxO.

My suggestion if you have not beta tested it. Try to get into open beta before buying it.  Everyone has different tastes.  I had a few friends that love the game, however when I tested it, I felt it fell waaay short of it's potential.  Maybe I will buy in after a few expansions... I really hate feeling like a clone...lol.  It's probably stupid that I am hung up on character customization, but... thats just me..

Well I dont have to buy it for a while I have plenty of time to try it on pre order, this is a good thing for me since the clone stuff does not bother me, sure i want something differant but we will be waiting a while for that so might as well have fun with something else. My very first mmorpg was eq1 and nothing has ever given me the same feeling, hopefully something will but its just a game and there are way more important fullfillments in life.

I have seen lots of clonining from eq1 to wow then eq2 to wow or wow to eq2. I have tried many mmorpgs and to be heonst the only one ive truly liked was wow but not certain elements of it like I said ealer. And eq1 even though it was fun for me it was still a grind and it was to time consuming.

I think these posts are trolls, they are trying to undermind and discredit the game by making false claims, like there is a mysterious batch of people who got bored. I think through the beta , Ive seen about 2 handfuls of posts like this throughout the official boards.

if you look at some of the posters names name they are pro SOE. Pretty much this is viral marketing thread. Just my opinion

I'm 100% this is a viral marketing post now with yet another SO reference. Wish moderators would get on top of this.

For one thing LOTRO isnt breaking any new ground... nor do I think they are trying to.  What LOTRO has, in my esitmation, a very solid gameplay foundation, its a friendly game and I think that it will most likely have the most solid game at launch of any mmorpg ever released.

Now they do make some tweaks to the EQ system.  For one thing, quests are where the xp lies, unlike wow.  You can, of course, go out and grind mobs to your hearts content but leveling will be slow and painful that way.  There is alot of content that is quite manageable solo, and some things that just need more firepower/healing that you can get from a group (fellowship).

There is very limited pvp with it's own rewards.  As you go through the game you earn destiny points.  These are points that can be spent at any time for buffs to your freep (freep=free people of middle earth; man elf dorf hobbit) or for upgrades to your creep (monster player).

At level 10 and above you can go to what is called a fell scrying pool.  By using this pool you can make a creep character that will be level 50 but restricted to the battleground.  Inside the battleground there are quests that earn you destiny points (on the monster side, while on the freep side you get destiny points and some goodies).  Freeps can enter into the battleground from their 40's up.

Alot of people say alot of games are like wow, which is always something I have found to be rather funny because wow is a game based off of the other games that came before it.  If someone looks hard enough every game can be compared to other games.

Is it the best game ever made?  No, however, it is one of the most solid play experiences I have had and given the restrictive nature of the IP I think Turbine has done very well.  While travelling around if you see something off in the distance you can pretty much travel to it.  The world is entirely seemless with some instanced encounters used to further the storyline.  Crafting is fun with a good amount of interdependence between the different crafting classes.  Finally it is a game that has alot of little things for the role players, this is after all an mmoRPG.

Best bet is to try it out for yourself.  I know that through beta 1 and even for a little bit of beta 2 it felt to me more like a job than a game.  I wasn't enjoying myself.  But that was entirely because I was expecting a game to suit me an my own expectations.  Once I accepted the game for what the develepors had stated the game was and wrapped my head around the idea that we are all secondary figures in the story  originally crafted by JRR Tolkien I found it to be a very enjoyable experience.  This game is not SWG, it's not WOW, its not Everquest or anything else.  It is its own game and lives up to every bit of the hype that has come from turbine.

Also, if you are a fan of Tolkien's books (moreso than Jackson's movie) then you will find somethign that you like from the game.

2 weeks? No, it took me around 7 before it got to the point of no fun. Its a well done game, graphics are nice, farming is fun, but to me it lacks a few things. Some will like it, some wont, no news there.
  • AngelboundAngelbound Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 1,437
    I never realized that heh.
  • AngelboundAngelbound Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 1,437

Thanks for the constructive post you sure did give me a positive prespective on this, and of course your right many players tend to look for the bad and not enjoy the game for what it is. Now I never expected lotro to be the same as other games and to be honest ive I never really felt like any of the past games ive played where clones to anything else. And im not a hardcore pvp fan im a pve fan mainly because of eq but I do not like grinding anymore:) And I think this monster thing is very unique and will make pvp interesting for those of us who dont want to play warhammer.

I guess I just need to watch my expectations and just simply experience:)

To make it short I'm going to paint with a broad brush.

If you're an MMORPG veteran from OU and EQ and want to see that type of game you'll be disappointed like me.

If you're new to the genre ,  this is you're first  MMORPG, or like they general way things are heading towards more casual play I  think  you'll love this game.

For me it's too quest based, it's comparable to having a good night story read out to before bed each night.

That said it's middle-earth so i might get it to play in small doses not more than 1x a week.

Games that are "quest heavy" are games done right. I mean honestly, what is even the point of having quests in certain other games when the rewards and exp is better if you straight grind on the same mobs over and over. I like what is being done in this game because doing a quest for somebody SHOULD yield more exp than in most games and the rewards should actually be worth it. I know some games where people only do most of the quests to get reputation/fame so that they may do other things. Not to level up or get awesome rewards.

I'll be giving the beta a try, but the gaping, bleeding wound that is Ac2 is still there. Atleast when i consider Turbine it is . Most i've read sounds pretty cool so far, but the thing i fear is that they don't shy from being a-holes. Oh, here comes an expansion .. cool! Wth game closing down? But on the other side of the penny is that i really liked Ac2's casual gameplay. Never felt pushed to rush or go do things i did not feel like doing. Lugians and tonks <3 .. so im expecting a lot of the wildlife in lotro ^^ .

When it's 90+ of the game, can until level 15 can pretty much all be solo'd, and access to certain areas/buildings/doors etc are blocked then it's too much.

I've quested in all my games, still do. But IMHO it's overdone in this game. It's 90% story driven and only 10% world-driven. It's great if you want to log on for 30 mins, run a quest and log off no question.

I do not think the game will be canceled for quite some time. Did you see the preorder numbers they have for this game so far?

  • whitedelightwhitedelight Member Posts: 1,544
Same could be said for a game that is 90% grind and 10% story driven,

The following is just a copy from a previous post I made, but I thought it'd be the best way to share my thoughts on the quests in this game, and what makes this game a little boring after a while:

The main quest line I actually enjoyed, but far too often, I was faced with a quest just like this:  Npc says' "go to my neighbor's house, and ask him if he needs any help"  You turn around to see the neighbor (whom you could spit on from where you stand), take about eight steps, and talk to him....  Npc says'  "I need to harvest some pipeweed could you help?  Great!  Its in my garden."   You turn to your right to see the blinking "here I am"  pipeweed about 5 feet away in his garden.  Go click on it to collect, take about 5 steps back to talk to the neighbor in distress again, and collect your reward -  700 experience points, some money, and a weapon that is better than anything available to you at the weapon shops for saving the day!  Note: my example isn't exact in everything, but its very, very close.  Now, I know that the quests get a little tougher, and sometimes more meaningful as you progress, but you will still see a lot of repetitive meaningless quests, and more quests like this one.

EDIT:  Try the beta, it's the best way for you to know for sure if you'll like it.
