Pro's and Cons of Classes

EverithEverith Member CommonPosts: 482

Hello. I've been in beta since early CB but unfortunatly due to my work schedule i was unable to really put time into anything but my 1 char. I played a Guardian and though i enjoyed if throughly I'm a healer at heart and will probably be playing a minstrel.

I was curious though. If someone would be able to give me and the community here a little list of Pro's and Con's for each of the classes. You know whats good and bad about each one of LOTRO's class list and maybe a reason as to what use each of them serve. For instance i have heard that captains although cool to play don't serve a purpose if a minstrel is about. I was hoping thise thread will help me solve the dilemma of classes and what they are alllll about.

Thank you to all who participate in this little database in advance

(Please no flaming or trolling as this is not a thread about your oppinion of the game this is a place for people to explain the classes from a technical and gameplay related standpoint and not what your favourite class is.)

Having played some of the class up to this point.

    Hunter Pros

    - Does lots of damage

    - Attacks from range

    Hunter Cons

    - Low defense

    - Dual wield is broke

    - Can't crowd control

    Guardian Pros

    - Can wear heavy armor and use a shield.

    - Has the highest defense in the game.

    - Flashy shield and weapon animations

    Guardian Cons

    - Very boring class to play due to repetitive tactics.

    - Very limited on the range attack.

    Captain Pros

    - Can buff the whole team and heal them

    - Very powerful if grouped with another Captain

    - Can get a pet at level 10

    Captain Con

    - Pet design is horrible. (The herald looks like a breaded hobo holding your flag while running behind you.)

    - Captain is the second most boring class in the game.

    - No flashy moves.

    - Attack moves do little damage.

    Champion Pros

    - Does lots and lots of damage in melee.

    - Has very flashy moves

    Champion Con

    - Dual-wielding is broke and it makes more sense to use a two-handed weapon.

    - Limited range

    - Lacking in healing and defense

I'd have to agree here, at least in a duo. My wife decided to try a minstrel and I played a captain, but we seemed to be either stepping on each others toes or I couldn't get agro off of her. Switched to guardian and all was well. Also, I forget when exactly, maybe level 16 or so, she was able to take medium armor as a class trait for her minstrel... maybe a waste of the slot in her eyes, but those few times she got agro from more than one mob I was glad for the time the extra AC bought me to get it back.

Thats awsome. Yea i always migrate to a healer class but i wanted to give captain a shot since it seems like an interesting class. But everyone i talk to just says their good but they'd rather have a minstrel anyday. And i loved every minute of guardian but i just can't help but wanting to be a healer/buffer hehe. PLUS i play a bard alot in pen and paper dnd.

I used to favour the Hunter, but I'm really liking the Champ and Guardian lately.  Would anyone who's levelled either to 50 be able to give a rough review of the classes? How well do they solo? Best weapons or styles of play? Any insight at all :)

Also, if you play a minstrel you're going to have one nice trick up your sleeve, you'll have a nice little "shout" to pull with that has a MUCH longer range than the captain, can be used while moving (unlike the hunter) including the good old "jump and shout" when terrain is blocking line of sight. Just be careful with it as it seems to be a sort of cone shaped area of effect. Still, in the places you can use it it's awesome for pulling and finishing off runners. The guardian is definitely lacking in ranged/slowing runner ability.

I played guardian for a while although i didn't get to the cap. They where alot of fun to play for me personally its always fun to have the big buff DEF guy. Although in early lvls of the game you're fairly usless being as your def really doesn't outwiegh anyone else. But as the levels go on guardians get more and more usefull for fellowships as their def just becomes to be outstanding. Not to mention their shield abilities and defensive stances. My ideal gear was always heavy armor and Longsword and shield. I enjoyed the class very much and it will propbably be my alt. I  just am more of a healer at heart than a tank though hehe

Duel wielding is not broke, it is working a intended as far as im concerned. I have heard your arguments Lastera and frankly i dont agree. When duel wielding you want a weapon with spd 1.0 to hit three times while a weapon with spd 3.0 hits once, correct ?    You are not attacking with two seperate weapons (think of the cordination brain overload. "three times dagger, one time hammer. three times dagger, one time hammer) instead when duel wielding you attack with the weapons as a single unit, using your spd which is highest (the hammer) .. just my 2 cents off subject

I haven't started in open beta yet.  So, what do you mean dual wield is broke?  Will the developers fix it for open beta?

Sounds like champion and hunter are going to be the classes everyone plays...

    I can add my favorites:

    Burglar Pros

    • stealth at level 4
    • Dual-wield at level 10 - decent damage output
    • very fun/active to play, lots of great animations and very variable tactics
    • Start group attacks ('conjunctions') to add damage, etc...
    • 'tricks' are some of the most fun and creative buffs and debuffs I've ever seen

    Burglar Cons

    • Can't take too much damage
    • seem to be pretty power-hungry with some tactics

    Loremaster Pros

    • 'Mage' styled class
    • fun pet class - pet abilities can augment and enhance your normal abilities
    • Lots of different 'spells' and debuffs to suit both solo and group play
    • seem to have some of the best 'legendary' talents for end game
    • best crowd control in game, multiple roots/stuns/dazes.

    Loremaster Cons

    • Lowest armor in the game, makes aggro management very important
    • Not 'really' a mage class - more like 'mage lite', not a nuker
    • limited weapons options (you can only use staff - I was hoping for sword at some point, ala Gandalf with Glamdring)

When scary things get scared, that's bad...

The DW is not broke, Lastera is just a troll who knows nothing about how game mechanics work in mmos. Read his history it's quite entertaining to laugh at him.

    Currently Playing: Everything but MMORPGs

LOL to the above post. And yea dual wield isn't broken it works just fine. By broke he probably meant didn't work like he wanted it to like some people claim the PvP is (which it's not)
