The main quest line I actually enjoyed, but far too often, I was faced with a quest just like this:  Npc says' "go to my neighbor's house, and ask him if he needs any help"  You turn around to see the neighbor (whom you could spit on from where you stand), take about eight steps, and talk to him....  Npc says'  "I need to harvest some pipeweed could you help?  Great!  Its in my garden."   You turn to your right to see the blinking "here I am"  pipeweed about 5 feet away in his garden.  Go click on it to collect, take about 5 steps back to talk to the neighbor in distress again, and collect your reward -  700 experience points, some money, and a weapon that is better than anything available to you at the weapon shops for saving the day!  Note: my example isn't exact in everything, but its very, very close.  Now, I know that the quests get a little tougher, and sometimes more meaningful as you progress, but you will still see a lot of repetitive meaningless quests, and more quests like this one.
EDIT:  Try the beta, it's the best way for you to know for sure if you'll like it.

I have had similar experiences while questing.  I love quests, but many quests in LOTRO involved things like you stated.  I tried to ignore the mini quests and stuck to the main quest line.  The only problem is that once you have created a couple of different characters and advanced the main quest lilne from different perspectives, i.e. chars, you end up with something ooookkkaayyy, now what? Crafting? Nah, not worth it, ok then off to exploring, but here riding a horse brings you almost half way through the playing area in about 5 minutes.   I was really looking forward to the misty mountains during my first exploration tours, but gosh what a graphical and immersive disappointment:  http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/gameId/45/setView/screens/display/9994

I have to admit even your character looks dissapointed from this screenshot, quite funny it truly is. You know ive been watching chronicals of spell born and it sounds good, but there is this really cool game coming out this april as well called perfect world and its a martial arts setting the world just looks beyond awesome, I hear nothing but good things about it and it takes less specs then even lotr as far as I know. So I may just cancel my pre order and try this other game before I buy.

Hmmm, that screen is not from the Misty mountains. Its from the start area for Dwarfs.

Have you even played the game more than 5 minutes ?

In regards to the OP. Play the open beta it is free. Enjoyment is subjective and no shoe fits every foot. I enjoy Lotro however I found some other games boring that other seem to enjoy. You may or may not enjoy LoTRO.

    I miss DAoC

if you look at some of the posters names name they are pro SOE. Pretty much this is viral marketing thread. Just my opinion

I'm 100% this is a viral marketing post now with yet another SO reference. Wish moderators would get on top of this.

Good thing you brought your tinfoil hat....

I am one of those handful of people that weren't really into the game. I only played in the stress test so I've kept my preorder to give it a longer try, but what I played just didn't grab me. I don't think its necessarily a bad game so much as it's just not as deep as I would like. I mean having instances for everything kinda kills the immersion. I had to instance to go into a pub....I mean really...thats just overkill.

And before you lose your mind over it, no, I am not a SOE employee and this is most definitely NOT viral marketing.

If you're an MMORPG veteran from OU and EQ and want to see that type of game you'll be disappointed like me.

If you're new to the genre ,  this is you're first  MMORPG, or like they general way things are heading towards more casual play I  think  you'll love this game.

I disagree i'm a veteran of EQ and i think this type of game is right up my river. Understandably it's not the same type of game but honestly if you like one game alot it by no means, means you will not like one of another. I've personally been playing mmo's since early eq steadily and ATM this is my favourite MMO it's enjoyable and theres enough depth in quests lors and crafting to fill my billet. Not to mention the traits you earn from doing farious character related things like blocking a certain amount of times or countering said amount.

You just have to be sure to understand this game is this game and it's not trying to be anything but.

Try the game for yourself i personally like it and find enough stuff to do but it's deffinitly different than other games you've probably played in terms of game flow.

I played for a few hours but found it pretty boring. Its really easy, there's too much instancing, all gear is soulbound, and the UI is pretty sucky.

I like the graphics though...the landscapes at least.
