has extreme graphics ruined gameplay

hi all

i believe that the extreme graphics that the gaming companies are trying to make have ruined the gameplay all together.

I have been playing online mmo's for more than 10 years now and every new game that comes out i believe is getting worse and worse... the graphics that they are trying to pull off has made them forget the story and gameplay and that is ruining the mmo world.  I would prefer a mmo with normal graphics and amazing gameplay and story.

i remember diablo, it didn't have good graphics but we have to admit everyone was playing it, it had it all, single player mode, online mode, mf ratings, cow levels!. But after that all the games started to fall, even wow with the expansion ruined itself. From the point that a green drop in outlands is better that most elites in the Azeroth, which for me just canceled Azeroth all together.

Well what else can i say....if anyone has anything to say about this please let me know :P

good gaming to all :)

I think upgrades in graphics are just a natural step in game evolution. No doubt, gameplay has been sacrificed a lot for some many years, but I also think that we have hit the apex of "photorealism race". Gamers nowadays no longer wowed by extreme graphics as termed, but focusing on gameplay and ultimately, fun. We might have a renaissance of fun and creative MMORPGs in a few years, who knows.

There will always be one thing I will complain about what the current standards of graphics has brought us: higher development costs than the old days, and higher expectations.

Id have to say the quality of gameplay as a general statement, has declined fairly inversely proportional to the increase in the quality of graphics. In my opinion at least anyway.

Not only do you see games with excellent graphics and crap gameplay being released. You also see games with average graphics and excellent gameplay coming out at the same time.

Case in point right now for my money would have to be STALKER and Supreme Commander. Stalker features a 4 year old game engine with what can only be desribed as "dated but acceptable" grafix. They can be nice at times, but in general they arnt up to say, half life 2 or Oblivion. Whereas Supreme commander definately sets a new benchmark for grafix but adds basically nothing to an already well worn genre. Indeed, even if it had come out last year there is no way known it would have touched Company of Heroes in the RTS awards and in my opinion its not even as good as WH40K.

Same is very true of MMO's. Without any doubt UO still offers the most deep, vairied and freestyle gameplay of an MMO. Nothing that has come out since has touched it for sheer variety of things to do in game. However almost any MMO you want to name, looks better.

    So in short.... yes

They're just have to be a balance.  Because, honestly,  shi**y graphics will turn me off as effectively as shi**y gameplay.

You might want to check out the Pc Gamer pod cast, that one dude does nothing but rave about supreme commander, it that game is heading to an editors choice for sure. Honestly that guy just can talk for ever about his supreme commander battles, you should check it out

You are right about s.t.a.l.k.e.r. That game has been in development longer then Vanguard, but what it brings to the table is probably going to be some of the best fsp action since hl 1.

There is no reason we cant have the dx10 potential and the integral dynamic complexities needed to make a game a grand thing.  We need to demand more from the companies and people that put out games for us.  Lightshows are boring after awhile anyways.

well pushing graphics to the edge really pushs our technology to the edge. I was reading pc world and sow that some company in japan is designing a light few pound helm for players ot enjoy a 3d enviroment for gaming. i will agree that some games give me a head ach with all the flashy lights, but all in all i like how it all developed. I still remember the old days when warcraft 1 was out ^^ or better yet the old dos games :P.

I think we hit a limit on how real a game could look with titles like Crysis.  I think the next step in game is actually putting more immersiveness in the game and making it into a living breathing changing world.  But thats not going to happen until there are programming houses that concentrate solely on making game engines.
