Is it possible for me to play LOTRO now?

How can I try this game out now? is it in open beta or anything? I wanna give it a go

I also have some questions about the game itself, what is the main focus? I noticed from some gameplay movies its ALOT like WOW in combat...looks identicle...similar movements, and a timer bar when ur firing stuff below your character. I dont like that, I hate WOW...Im big on DAOC, been playing for 3 years now

is the focuse of the game pve? pvp? questing? a mix? pvp woudl be ideal but if the game content is great and it has at least decent pvp I may give it a try at release. Although from what I saw, its WOW like...not good >< just tell me stuff about the game :P

Game goes "open beta" on Friday, March 30th.  The time has, as yet, not been set.  See you in-game, Friday!

the game doesnt go OPEN beta on 30th march, that's when pre-order customers in the US only get in. Actual open beta starts one week later.

LotRO is very close to WoW in architecture and spirit.  Two main points of departure are Quest Lore and PvP.

Quests are very Lore centric, long, and involved.  Other than that, they pretty much standard fare.

PvP is done using 'Monster Play' type mechanic.  At level 10, you can play a level 50 monster vs level 50+ players in special zones.

If you hated WoW, you are probably not going to like LotRO.  However, for $10, you can get into the Open Beta for a month and try it out for real cheap.

For me, I like WoW.  And I like the LotR mythos.  So I will certainly play at least one character to Level Cap.

Open beta for non-preorders starts april 6.

It is primarily a pve/quest based game.  There is a pvp zone so to speak accessible by characters (as monster players) from level 10 up and from normal players with their characters after they reach their 40's.

There are a number of previews all across the web detailing some of the play mechanics and the like... anything else will be subject to fanboi hype lol.  Basically the story is as seen in the Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien.  Frodo Baggins is running from the Nazgul and heading towards rivendell where they are going to start the whole fellowship thingie.  However the player only intersects some of those characters at different points.  The players actually have a seperate task... to find out exactly what is going on up in Angmar.  That region had only just made it into the game about a week or so before the end of closed beta so I have no idea of the exact storyline up there, but it has something to do with the Witchking of Angmar, the "chief" of the Nazgul.

The basic mechanics of the gameplay itself are not too different from the EQ/WoW/EQ2/Vanguard/etc etc etc crowd of games.  You target your enemy and kill it and move to the next all in order to complete quests.  While a player can, if they choose, attempt to grind out their levels it will be far slower going than if a player runs quests as that is where the meaty xp is.  There is no RVR or world changing pvp type things.  There can not be as the game is set in a very distinct timeline with a whole helluva lot of lore dictating what can and can't be done.  However, with that said, most of the focus for the players is not in line with that of the fellowship.  The player's tasks are on a seperate tangent that was never really covered by Tolkien.

well ill try it on the 6th of april, thats like a week, I can wait. Do i have to pay to do that?

I love LOTR, but the game doesnt sound like my type...as I said before im big on DAOC...WOW doesnt do it for me. But ill definatly give it a go.

You have to realize that it doesn't have traditional PVP or RVR like DOAC.

It has Player vs Monster Players. Freeps vs Creeps.

At level 10 you can create a Monster (Creep)  to play against Players. (Freeps)

Don't expect to log in and be ganking people in a few hours. I don't remember Orcs ganking lowly Hobbits in the Shire in LOTR.

Everyone, just get over it! This is NOT a PvP game. Its a PvE game with a PvP mini-game thrown in to appease a segment of the population (like a 4 star restaurant having cheese pizza on the menu for the kids).

PvP'er: Stay away, this ain't the game for you.

Those of you that keep trying to convince PvP'ers to play LOTRO because of the PvMP, STOP IT! They will be disappointed.

LOTRO is story driven quest based PvE game.

How about we say that the PvP in LotRO is for 'Casual' PvP players.  I don't really like the 'Hardcore' ShadowBane / EVE / Classic UO style of FFA PvP.

But, I am really looking forward to LotRO PvP.   Just cannot wait to take my PvP monster and charge into a group of Free Peoples *knowing* that it is my fate to die.

If only I can take one of them with me. . .

I think it is the PERFECT solution to PvP balance issues, ganking issues, and such.
