lots of time on my hands today. So here it goes
Dark Elves
Dark Elf Corsairs or Executioners. Offensive melee character - You can't really see it, but Corsairs fight with sword and dagger.
Corsairs - "These seafaring reavers excel at boarding other vessels, making them amongst the Dark Elves deadliest fighters in close combat."
Executioners described - Here the craft of Death is held in the highest esteem. The elite warriors of this city are the Executioners, and they are foremost amongst the warriors of the Witch King
Dark Elf Warrior or Dark elf Black Guard
Defensive melee charcter
Warrior - basic warriors
bLACK GUARD ARE Described as " the fiercest fighters in all the Land of Chill. Wondrously ruthless and efficient on the attack, and immovable in defence, the Black Guard are the terror of the Dark Elf enemies."
Dark Elf Shade or Dark Elf Assassin
Melee/Ranged
Shade - "The Shades are a silent and deadly brotherhood of warriors who guard the mountain passes to the west. They live apart from the rest of Dark Elf society, waging an endless war against the enemies of Malekith."
Assassin - "During the revelries of the Death Night, the Witch Elves roam the streets of the Dark Elf cities, and all who cross their path are offering to Khaine. Amongst those taken are young babes, who are offered up to the Lord of Murder in the Caldron of Blood. Most perish, but those chosen by Khaine emerge unharmed, and are then initiated in the dark secrets of Khaine. They are raised to be Dark Elf Assassins, the masters of death and the bringers of oblivion."
Darf Elf Witch
Caster/healer
"Witch Elves are the maiden-elves who are wedded to Khaine, the Lord of Murder, in the midnight rites of blood sacrifice and magic."
High Elves
High Elf Shadow Warriors
Melee/Ranged
"Armed with bows and using their infiltration skills the Shadow Warriors are a great addition to any High Elf force."
High Elf Mage
Caster
"Those who follow the path of High Magic, or True Magic as it is sometimes called, are amongst the most skilled mages ever to weave a spell."
High Elf Dragon Prince or Phoenix Guard
Defensive Melee
Dragon Prince -"Dragon Princes are rock hard cavalry that can take a lot of punishment and are capable of causing a lot of damage when they charge into the enemies ranks." - Just take them off the horses. Heavly armored.
Pheonix Guard - "Armed with their halberds and causing fear the Phoenix Guard are a dangerous opponent and a solid block that can defend the centre of your battle line. "
Offensive Melee
White Lions or Swordmasters of Hoeth
White Lion - "Armed with Great Weapons the White Lions can wound foes with high toughness. They have access to Magic Banners and their Lion cloak means they have a special save against missile fire"
Swordmaster - "There are many ways to travel the path of wisdom. Some fast and meditate for years, others study obscure and arcane tomes, but for a few their true path lies in martial prowess. These are the Swordmasters, though they are not only experts with a blade; they also learn to fight with their bare hands or with any other weapon they can reach, especially their finely balanced ceremonial great swords."
The only thing I couldn't find was a healer class for high elves? Maybe the mage does that.

And I don't want to hear anything about "I don't believe in vampires" because *I* don't believe in vampires, but I believe in my own two eyes, and what *I* saw is ******* vampires! "
If they make a class which is Female Elf only I am going to be highly amused. There will finally be an excuse for men to play female toons.
"But, but, I have to be a female!!!!!"
har har.
Otherwise, excellent post!! 10/10
Doktar - 70 Troll Priest - Perenolde
thank you.
I like that there might be some classes that are only male or female.
I mean Orks are, as of now, just males.
Dark Elf Witch? I like that idea. I'll gladly cut that whores head off and and burn her vile body before she decides to hex my squad.
Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?
Final Fantasy 7
1. Phoenix Guards will not be playable. Unless Games Workshop breaks all lore surrounding them, it's not gonna happen. The Phoenix Guard are the guardians of the Shine of Asuryan and the Eternal Flame that all Phoenix Kings must pass through to receive the Blessing of Asuryan. They are silent warriors. No talking at all. Not a viable choice based on lore.
2. As much as I would love to see the Dragon Princes as playable, also based on their lore, I don't see them as truly viable. They are a declining people, much like the great dragons their ancestors used to ride on. There are other High Elf profession threads on here where I go into detail on why I don't see them as a choice.
3. Shadow Warriors are one of two very viable choices for the Ranged DPS profession. If the Ranged DPS class isn't the Shadow Warrior it will be a High Elven Mage. I believe the Mage will be filling another role though.
4 The Mages of the High Elves are second in power only to the ancient Slaan Mages of the Lizardmen of Lustria. I believe the Mage will play the role of Healing/DPS very similar to the Greenskin's Goblin Shaman.
5. The White Lions are a good choice for the heavy tank profession, but based on their lore and being the primary guardians of the Phoenix King's personage, I believe that Silver Helms will end up taking this spot.
6. The Melee DPS will either be the Swordmasters of Hoeth or the White Lions of Chrace, more likely to be the Swordmasters.
The profession definitions are like this.
Tank
Melee-DPS
Ranged-DPS
Healer-DPS
Mythic is designing professions around those 4 classifications. Greenskins are all male because female Greenskins don't exist. New orcs and goblins are formed from mushrooms. I have no clue on the Dark Elf professions though, I only learned enough about them so I could beat them in the TT game.
never fear I is here!
Hey Juggy,
I think you have some good possibles here; very similar choices to the ones I made with another thread of the same title here about a month or so back. I think both the dark elves and high elves are going to have a mage class, as it's a defining class for both races - Dark Magic vs. High Magic - and should be fun on the battlefield.
As previously mentioned, the Pheonix Guard are probably out of the question with a very very outside chance of making it into WAR as a playable class - it'd be strange to see them, seen as they don't actually speak. That leaves Dragon Princes and Swordmasters of Hoeth as the possibles for a tank - both heavy armoured - and it's likely going to be the Swordmasters here I think (though I would still love Dragon Princes instead, if they implement mounted combat - which is very likely). For melee dps, it'll be nice to see the Shadow Warriors fill this role. That leaves space for a mage and whatever priest class they can dream up (possibly a priest of Isha here).
For dark elves it's a tad more interesting. You mentioned Witch Elves as a healer class and Rekera went on to say that they could also be male? In the TT game, Witch Elves are all female, lightly armoured, frenzied toe-to-toe fighters only - which would be awesome to fill the DPS role. I guess we'll have to wait and see what they come up with for a healer class - but it's my guess that they'll invent something new for this or even re-invent something old - perhaps a renegade priest of Vaul for this role? - like the one who made Malekith's black suit of armour.
It's odds on though that whatever classes they choose to fill the roles, each one will be iconic in appearance and give us all an even tougher time deciding on which on to choose to play first. Dark Elves were one of my favourite armies in Warhammer, because they are just... well... really sick and twisted, evil individuals that always gave rise to "muhaha" laughter whenever I crushed my enemies (and later drank and bathed in their blood). Maybe there was something wrong with me when I was growing up, but I did so enjoy imagining my Witch Elves feasting upon the twitching, screaming bodies of the High Elves after a battle. It made me feel all cold and fuzzy inside.
Thanks for filling me in.
I have no knowledge of WH lore
Witch elves are not healers though.
They are drug using light tanks. They drug themselves up and are hardly lucid and work themselves up into a frevor in the name of khaine and slaughter their enemies, rip out their intestines and then dance on their corpses.
The dark elven nation is prided on its use of pets. Also, each realm is probibaly going to have an ETHOS, more than a standard (fighter, fighter, mage healer) type set up. Just like mythic did with dark age of camelot. Not all realms had the same number of tank, archers, stealthers, healers or mages but "over all" it ballanced out and each realm stuck to its ETHOS. Midgard wound up having 8 melee classes and 2 healers, while Hibernia had 4 healing classes, and but only 3 real front line melee types.
If we stick to Ethos so far, Orks and Dwarves are melee oriented. Orks are strong and Dwarves are tough as stone.
Orcs and dwarves both have a primary and light tank. The Dwarves lack a caster, and the orks have a healer/dot'er/debuffer that can swing a mean stick class in the shaman but no real caster either.
Empire has a melee based class in the Knight but then also has fighter/mage witch hunter and a fighter/Healer in the warrior priest. They also have a primary caster.
Chaos Uses a light and heay tank and then has a debuffer/Buffer/healer in the zelot and a Primary caster in the Magus.
So Just like the IP Chaos has a bunch of tanks and debilitating warping debuffing magic (I wouldnt be suprised if the chosen had demoralizing and debuffing abilities)
Orks and Dwarves brawl , and Empire has witch Hunters! See everyone sticks to their IP
I would theorize elves to Not have many sturdy brawling units. Order as of now only has 1 caster class, and High elves are known for their magic. So we can expect "mages" to mage an appearance. . . Sword masters would be an almost lock, Is it me or did we forget that archers are what elves are known for? Expect archers to make an appearance One of the more popular elven classes are shadow warriorsI cant see a way to work them into the game as a class though, so I would expect a portion of the game to run you heavy into their lore and background but wouldnt expect this archer/melee stealther unit to be in the game
I would expect to see Witch elves (they are in the promo video) to be part of the Drucchi army. Executioners are another. Drucchi are known for their pets so I would expect beastmaster to come along as well. Finish it all off with the Dark elven Priest and there you have it, my picks for the elven war.
That male statement was in regards to Dark Elf Sorceresses. Not Witch Elves.
Some really good points here too, and especially High Elves being range focused. But don't forget that the vast majority of High Elves can use a bow in the TT game, if not all of them - expert marksmen, the lot of them... which is very fun when you're fighting undead. I see shadow warriors as being a very real possibility, because they are good all round mobile damage dealers - admittedly, there's no stealth in WAR, but it's really a minor point because they used cover to ambush their enemies. I'd be quite surprised not to see Shadow Warriors tbh, but you could well be correct here - Mythic might go for something different to fit the balancing act...
Beastmasters.... I'd love to see these as a Dark Elf choice, what with their ethos on seeing just about everything non Dark Elf as a "beast" to be controlled - even humans. Could be problematic though, what with War Hydras being so big and imposing and all - and the beastmaster is kind of famous for being able to tame these "little" lovelys:
Ahhh.... it would be so nice.
Tank
Melee DPS
Ranged DPS
Healer DPS
What Mythic is doing is sticking closely to what each of the races are built on in the table top game. I am sure they realize this, but the way WAR is going is following even closer to the table top version than probably intended. Each of the 6 races are fully contained. You can build a group consisting of nothing but Dwarves and that group won't be lacking any aspect. Let's get into some examples.
Dwarven army playstyle is very much a Hammer meeting an Anvil. They are slower, heavily armored units with no magic capability. The professions are Iron Breaker, Hammerer, Engineer, and Runepriest. Taking some excerpts directly from the WAR page on each profession to capture the essence of each one.
Iron Breaker - As an Ironbreaker, your goal is to get between your friends and your foes and use your defensive abilities to absorb and deflect attacks. If you can’t immediately claim a foe’s attention, your grudge bonuses begin to make you a problem foes can’t ignore as you grow more and more potent in your defense of your allies. Obviously, Ironbreakers truly shine in groups but even solo they are quite capable as long as they can get close enough to wear down foes with their axe or hammer.
Hammerer - As a Hammerer your job is relatively simple: Hit things hard! Your strength will grow the longer the fight runs, so your best tactics put you in battle quickly and focus on dropping a single foe. However, it’s important that you plan ahead within the fight. When your enemy falls to your hammer you must keep your momentum going or risk losing it. This means you must always be on the lookout for another target to engage even as you break out of your current fight. Playing a Hammerer is straight forward but challenging – place the right blows at the right time on the right target and you will emerge victorious.
Engineer - As an Engineer, the heart of your job is to rain destruction on the heads of your enemies. Like other ranged combatants, you prefer to avoid the frontline. However, unlike most other ranged classes, you reach the peak of your power at a relatively short range. You must maneuver wisely, positioning yourself so that you can strike at your target without exposing yourself to their attacks. You are a capable melee fighter, and you can strike at extended range, but your best attacks – grenades, blunderbusses, artillery bombardment, and more – require a closer position.
Runepriest - Preparation is critical to your success as a Runepriest, as is developing a keen sense of timing and coordination. You can use your runes to protect your friends and enhance their powers (even placing some of the runes’ effects under the subject’s control), but their strength wanes quickly upon use and you must be ready to reinforce them as needed. Advance preparation makes it easier for you to split your attention between supporting your friends, and assaulting your foes. This division of duty is absolutely necessary in battle. Focusing purely on offense will leave your group mates without support after a short time. Conversely, playing purely a support role will rob your group of a rune-enhanced warrior of significant power.
The Ironbreaker is the tank. It captures the exact meaning of a tank. Frontline warrior that can absorb huge amounts of damage. Hammerers are pure Melee DPS. They hit things with the hammer and they hit them hard. Engineers are a ranged damage class that uses all kinds of black powder devices to cause damage. They can melee or fire from longer range, but as the website says, best range is just out of melee. Runepriests are the mages of the Dwarven army. They don't actually use any magic. They create runes by working magic and metal together and use those in it's place.
So looking at those 4 professions, we see they fit perfectly into the Tank, Melee DPS, Ranged DPS, Healing DPS categories. Let's take a look at the Greenskin professions next.
In the table top game, Greenskins are all about the numbers and overwhelming you with the WAAAAGH! GS units cost about half that or normal units. When you face a GS army, you face waves of attackers. Taken directly from the Games Workshop website's section on Orcs and Goblin is this - "Orcs and Goblins are the scourge of the Warhammer world, an unending tide of ferocious raiders. For every greenskin Waaagh! defeated on the field of battle, another arises to trample a swathe of destruction across the land. After all, Orcs and Goblins live to fight!" It's all about fighting and fighting in large numbers. It's all about offense and overwhelming the enemy. Unfortunately, that doesn't translate well to a MMO, but with the slight changes Mythic has made to the Greenskin army, they succeeded very well in doing just that.
Black Orc - Combat for a Black Orc revolves around engaging and defeating enemies one at a time, while weathering the fire of their allies. As a front line fighter, the Black Orc is well equipped to withstand the attacks of his enemies. Though protected by shield and armor, and possessing a hearty constitution, his greatest strength lies in his ability to disable his primary opponent. His use of jarring blows and unexpected attacks allow the Black Orc to exploit the openings they create to reduce the enemy’s ability to fight back.
Orc Choppa - Playing a Choppa is straight forward. Get in the fight, and stay there as long as you can without getting yourself killed. The longer you’re in a fight, the more your morale builds and the more berserk you become. This makes your attacks more powerful and unlocks new devastating abilities. However, the use of these abilities depletes your morale and thus reduces your combat strength. You must decide whether it’s more important to maintain your berserker frenzy or unleash a powerful attack upon your foe. You must also remember that you are less well armored than your Black Orc cousins, and generally less durable. The fighting itself may be simple, but strategy is required to reach and maintain your peak effectiveness.
Goblin Squig Herder - As a Squig Herder you lead from the rear, turning your Squigs loose on the enemy and supporting them with commands, arrows and bait while safely out of harm’s way. The most critical elements of your strategy revolve around your choice of Squigs for your pack, and the abilities you use to support them. Your various breeds offer you tools for different situations, and you must mix and match them to meet your needs. Tactically speaking, your job is to kill the enemy while avoiding his counter-attacks – both you and your Squigs are deadly but fragile beasts.
Goblin Shaman - As a Shaman, you’ll have to walk a careful line in balancing your offensive and support abilities. You can achieve the greatest rate of healing by focusing on that skill exclusively. You can maximize your rate of damage by focusing purely on those abilities. However, focusing on a single talent will lessen your overall impact on the battle. The strength your support skills gain from an ongoing Waaagh! is significant. Using your offensive magic to contribute directly to the fight will increase the power of your support magic, allowing you to better help your group.
From this, you can see that the Black Orc is a tank. However, unlike the Ironbreaker, he isn't about just soaking up damage, he goes under the belief a good offense is the best defense. The Orc Choppa is very much a Melee DPS class if ever there was one. It's all about getting in the face of your enemy and hacking them to pieces with your weapons. The Goblin Squig Herder is a ranged DPS class with pets. The best way to think of a Squig Herder is much like the Thuergist from DAoC but with smarter pets. Your pets are like missles that don't explode but keep hitting an enemy. All while you are sitting behind the Black Orcs from range. The Goblin Shaman is a nuker with the capacity to heal. You can focus on one single aspect. But doing so will make you weaker than by using the force of the WAAAAGH! With these 4, you can also see they fit into the 4 profession classifications well. Black Orc is the tank, Orc Choppa is the Melee DPS, the Squig Herder is the Ranged DPS, and the Shaman is the Healing DPS. If you look straight across at these 2 races, you see they line up very well.
Tank - Ironbreaker vs Black Orc
Melee DPS - Hammerer vs Orc Choppa
Ranged DPS - Engineer vs Squig Herder
Healing DPS - Runepriest vs Goblin Shaman
Next up is the Empire. Mythic hasn't fully fleshed out all 4 professions but you will see they follow this same pattern.
Knight of the Burning Sun - Since Mythic doesn't have any information about them yet on their website, I went to Games-Workshop to get information. Here are some excerpts from the description of the Knights of the Blazing Sun as well as a picture.Though many folk mistrust them for courting strange foreign deities, the Knights of the Blazing Sun have unceasingly fought with distinction against the enemies of the Empire and are held as a prized ally by many Elector Counts. A relatively small order, the Knights of the Blazing Sun are also known as the Templars of Myrmidia because of their devotion to the Estalian warrior deity Myrmidia. Largely unknown in the lands of the Empire, it was only through the strangest of chances that the Order’s worship of her began at all. As such, this profession will be the Empire's tank. This is from the December 2006 Newsletter - "Huge hulking knights who deal out tons of damage with their swords¦ They are for those people that want to play the good guys but basically want to be armored tanks!"
Witch Hunter - Also lacking information on the WAR site, I couldn't find much in the way of Witch Hunters on Games-Workshop's website either. I'd count on the being a Melee DPS class though. There is a link to a video that discusses them here: www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/warhammeronline/news.html Based on Paul Barnett's explanation, it's going to be the Spanish Inquisition in leather. Rapiers, Fire, Confessions, and a whole lot of damage. Witch Hunters will end up being Melee DPS.
Bright Wizard - As a Bright Wizard you will destroy the enemy with arcane fire, but you must do so with cunning intellect, or risk finding your own end despite your power. Your defenses are minimal, and you are nothing if not obvious. For you, the best defense is your own mighty offense and that can be a very powerful deterrent. Quick decisive action is pivotal to your fighting. You must unleash your spells on the enemy forth with so that they have the greatest possible opportunity to burn. Then you must take advantage of the opportunities this presents, using other powers to detonate your burning victims. If you are incautious, you may be slain before your enemy is defeated, only for him to fall to your lingering magic, but with skill and quick thinking victory will be yours.
Warrior-Priest - As a Warrior Priest, your place is in battle. Your Righteous Fury grows as you strike down the enemy in Sigmar’s name, and your divine powers grow with Righteous Fury. Thus, to reach the peak of your power you must join in the fight. Your prayers bear the power of your god to take life, or give it back, but they are designed to compliment your melee capabilities. Your blessings bring powerful boons to those around you, but you must be close to the fight for your words to reach them. To do your job you must place yourself at risk, but it is in this risky position which you are most powerful.
As you can see from these, they also very much fit the whole 4 profession classification system. The Knights are tanks. Period. The Witch Hunters will use rapiers, torches and flintlocks shoved into your mouth. That's all close combat melee type fighting. That means Melee DPS. Bright Wizards blow things up. That's as Ranged DPS as it gets. Warrior-Priests are the Healing profession of the Empire, but they are literally right up on the front line with the Knights of the Blazing Sun. The last race we know about is Chaos. This is ending up a huge post though so I'll end it with this. If you look at the description of the various professions of Chaos, you will also see they very much fit this 4 profession model. The tank is the Chosen, the Zealot is the Healing DPS, the Magus is the Ranged DPS and the Marauder is the Melee DPS. By following this model with such a generalization as to what each one is, you can just see the massive amount of variety each profession type can bring to the table.
Going from that, I will be terribly disappointed if they do not add in a mage / warlock type class for the dark elves. I'm sure theyll put in a shadow knight / dread knight type class in. It should be pretty interesting to see what the final result is none the less.
"My P.O. telling me I need a 9 to 5
But I already got a job, and that's staying alive"
You forgot Dark Elf Sorceress, only females can be Mages except for Malekith the Witch King.
Also Dark Elf Beastmasters wouldn't take much work to turn into a Beatlord/Hunter style class.
My Best Guess would be.
High Elf,
Dragon Prince (it sound so much better than Silver Helms although they work too) as the Tank.
Shadow Warriors as the Melee/Ranged DPS think Ranger class.
White Lions as Melee DPS (take them over Swordmasters because the other 2 Melee classes already use Swords).
High Elf Mages as Range DPS probably with the High Magic lore.
Dark Elf
Cold One Knights (there more defensive that Black Guard or Executioners. As they fight with Hand Weapon and Shield) as the Tank
Beast Masters as Melee dps (they wear little or no armour) with a Pet.
Dark Elf Sorceress as Range DPS.
Executioners as Light Tanks.
I Wouldn't get too caught up on "class definitions".
Is it so hard to just have a guy called the Hammerer who's job is to Hammer things? Or a Squig Herder being the guy who uses Squigs to fight?
When you start calling classes "tanks", "healers", or "ranged DPS" all your doing is limiting them and thier design to that role. While these specific class roles may work great in PvE games, its only setting up for disaster in an RvR(PvP) oriented game.
Also, a number of interviews have stated that every class is going to be a "capable fighter" first before anything else
I want my Skaven plague monk. All hail the Great Horned Rat.
Seriously though, although I usually hate playing elves in all games, I am looking forward to elves in WAR. I really don't like trying to predict what classes will be available for them, cause I've already been surprised a few times. Someone mentioned that Witch Elves will almost certainly be a choice, because they were in the promo video. Dwarf Slayers were in the video too, and they're nowhere to be seen. Still though, I think that their choice of classes, and their re-tooling of some of the TT classes, has so far looked pretty good. My excitement over this game has dimmed a bit since none of my old TT armies are anywhere to be seen (Beastmen, Skaven and Wood Elves), but I'm still cautiously optimistic.
As far as High Elves are concerned, I just don't see Dragon Princes or Phoenix Guard being a logical choice. These are elite units, surrounded by massive amounts of lore. If you look at the dwarf and greenskin classes, they are pretty stock choices as far as units are concerned. You could say they're rather ordinary bread and butter classes. I just can't see proper balance being maintained if you've got a freaking former Dragon Rider on one side and Joe Schmo everydwarf on the other.
Just my opinion though, could be wrong.
Great post there mate. Now, yet again im not sure wich class to play :P
PS. still the emotes don't work for me. arghish!
