Storyless mmo

Why do games have to be based around a story why can't they just give us a world and let us build stories and make adventures it would be so much funner.

Because then you can't make an RP server... how do you make quests without story?

Do you mean a game without Lore or a backround story?

Or do you mean a mission log or journal for players to follow?

I remember the days of EQ1, you didn't have a journal. So unless you read from web sites where to obtain quests, you could just starting grinding from day1 in the newbie area. Back then it was called a challenge because you had to talk to NPCs, figure out from the words of the chat what the NPC wanted , perhaps write them down and do it.

With the arrival of WoW, devs soon learned make the game mechanics easier and subscriptions will come in droves..

Otherwise, if you mean I don't want a lore or backround at all. Might as well play Progress Quest.

Wouldn't EVE, Ryzom and Lineage 2 fit that description? These games are all pretty much community driven and have very little in terms of pre-made content/stories that you need to follow. I'm sure there are a few more. Ryzom actucally has a quest tool so players can make their own content if that is what you mean.

EVE has quite a bit of storylines going on in the game, and a team at CCP dedicated to the ongoing storyline.  It's true that many players simply ignore that, but it's there.  Plus EVE has a rich, rich backstory that makes the setting for EVE very good, rather than just having it be a random spaceship shooty-shooty type game (although undoubtedly some of the knuckle-dragging crowd do play it that way).

Can't imagine a MMORPG with 0% storyline... how would you explain the land/world you started into, or whether you craft laser guns or broadswords? Maybe you might like Second Life, it's fully customizable with no story except yours.

I feel MMORPGs should have a solid storyline, but they need to give players freedom to create stories and stuff alongside the lore.

why try to explain it, let the players come up with thier own lore, maybe later on in the games life give hints but not the FULL story. As far as crafting people with intelligence can and will always find ways to improve thier life (even if it takes a while). So maybe start with basic crafting of stone weapons and as you move through the game time, people gain more knowledge on how to mine, smithing and fletching. so then people can make metal weapons and what not.

Make a "second life" type of game but with more of a medieval/fantasy theme and i would be there in a heart beat.
