Mythic made me an addict by watching their login LOL

I don't even think that took alot of resources to make. That's an ingame model with better lighting and maybe slightly better textures and the roar is probably a standard emote. Yet the result is absolutely cool.

Its the little things that count, compare that to VG:SoH login screen. LOL!
gosh I hated VG's login screen >_<

It's really sad that WAR's placeholder login screen is better than Vanguard''s actual login screen.
yea

As for the waste of time/resources etc goes...your wrong. The game starts when you double click the icon. I don't want to login to a game that looks like a crappy webpage. I want to WAR as soon as I start, even if it is just a badass looking ork yelling. The immersion starts there and I know what to expect. As for the snow, I hope killing more dwarves adds more blood covered snow but that might take it to mature...

It's also why "the login screen" isn't even on my personal Top Ten list of what's important in an MMO.....because when the game is GOOD, you want to get through logging in ASAP. When the game is FUN, you'll be ramped to play, even if the log in screen is a picture of the dev team.
If anyone's still discussing WAR's log in screen two months after launch, I'd be shocked....
If players sat watching the log in screen, instead of getting prepared to play (bathroom, snacks, etc.) after two months, I'd be amazed...
If WAR got a better review because of it's log in screen, I'd probably laugh.
If anyone says that, despite bugs, imbalance, boring game play, and terrible community, they stayed with WAR cause the log in screen was roxxor....well, i'd probably laugh again.
But maybe that's just me....when I pay 15 bucks a month on top of the box cost, I expect few bugs, good graphics, fun/challenging gameplay, an engaging story, a good community, and responsive tech service....not a cool log in screen. The big stuff better work first...the little stuff is just that...little.
You only get one chance to make a first impression. And what is the biggest first impression in an MMO? The login screen. It's the first thing you come to when you load up the game after a fresh installation. That's where the first impressions of a game happen. If the login screen sucks, the impression isn't a good one. If the login screen is awesome, the first impression is, " Wow. If they made the login screen look this good, what about the rest of the game?"
There's also that hard-to-define variable called "polish." Apparently, a polished game is very important to gamers, but most couldn't describe it to you. There's the number of bugs, of course, and the severity of bugs. How optimized the code is. Lag and server issues. Whether or not classes are closely balanced to the point that only minor tweaks, and not massive nerfs and buffs, are needed. If the content is there and is cohesive. If the gameworld is immersive, not bland.
And then there's those minor things that have no bearing on actual gameplay, but generally make you like the game better. Like a kickass opening cinematic that you'll only watch one time. Or NPCs that stop to say hello to one another while they walk about town. Animations that look like they have weight behind them. Sound effects that are in-sync with their source onscreen. Cleverly infused humor. And hey, a login screen that makes you think something cool or exciting is about to happen.
A login screen only needs to get your account comfirmation and move you into the game. I could do that with a black screen and text. But it wouldn't make a very good first impression to the player.
Seriously. It's Are'el. This forum doesn't allow apostrophes in usernames.
Also, according to the Newsletter, the login screen also shows some of the tricks they can do with their new lighting system. That means we'll get a lot of ambience in every zone, guys how awesome is that??
A good login screen does not mean its goona be a long process to log in, Im goona swear so exucse me... WoW's login screen is a nice first impressions too, and all you need to do is enter your account password.... hit "login"..... hit "play" and your in the game world on the toon you last played.

For Serious, having played my share of mmo's the first time I saw that Dark Portal looming in the background it set the pace and got my blood pumping. All that in a login screen.
Personally, I'd like to see something like Dawn of War where the login screen changes based on what race you played last. Hell, they could take it even further by actually using the character that you played last!

It might be a little thing for you, but as you see many people seem to like having a great login screen.
And why do you suggest that it took an unreasonable amount of work to make it? Just because it looks great? Do you know their game engine that well? For all I know using the Gamebryo Scene Designer it's as easy as:
load environment
set up camera view
load orc
set up lightsources
loop orc emote
then move things around until they fit
done
I'd say that's faster than having a 2d artist make a half decent background, and it's pretty much the same stuff that has to be done a thousand times for actual ingame zones anyways.

Hahahahahahahahahaha.... I just sit here reading through all comments upon the Login Screen..... THE LOGIN SCREEN
And omg! WHY I ask do you all react so strong upon it? It's seriously amusing though but people say stuff like "I pay 15 bucks to play the game not look at the login screen" and stuff like that... geeze.

It's not the actual Login screen that will be in the game. It's a placeholder created to demonstrate the Lighting that will be in the game.
The model is an in-game model, and the background is static with some fire. It's a simple animation and sound that's looped.
It probably took them an hour to make.
If you play an Orc Choppa and it's night and there's a fire around, you're going to see that exact thing in-game.
They said the only reason they were showing it was to display the Lighting, and that they would be putting up screens with this Lighting Tool in place as soon as next month, so it's just a taste of what the game will "actually" look like, as opposed to what we've seen so far which is without the proper lighting.

Seems like a reasonable use of code, developer time, and money.
/sarcasm off
In your list of important, wanted, or even necessary features for an MMO, where does "cool login screen" fall?
Nothing special to see here.... move along, move along!
He howls like my cat when it needs to goto the toilet.
Don't let his /sarcasm get you down man that was awesome...he needs a change of /diapers because he pee peed all in his old one!
