The Future of Apple and Games

I recently had to purchase an apple over a microsoft for my college. I was wondering, i play wow on my apple and diablo and so on. Are there any games out there besides blizzard that run on macs? Im starving for something new to play and im about to just buy a cheap desktop so i can try out something new.

Yeah, I was kind of expecting a picture of a turd or something.

At least those poor people have WoW.

THAT's it! THAT's why they have so many subscribers! It's the only decent game that works on a Mac!

Yes, there are plenty of games out there for macs. Not as many as pc games but plenty.

Also, if you own a newer pentium mac you can use "bootcamp" which  I understand runs many games quite well.

yep, that about sums it up

seriously though, maybe they should consider some sort of agreement with one of the dominant console makers or something. It would fill that gaping hole in gaming in one smooth move. Nintendo and Wii seems to be the perfect match for a Macintosh computer, they also share a lot in philosophy. Maybe make a Mac with additional licensed HW that can play Wii games (ok that was a long shot, but would be kinda cool), or bet on interconnectibility and mutual promotional support, possibilities are endless.

Ok still pointing out that im new to macs. what is boot camp and do you know any other games. because me and my friend who works at gamestop cant think of anything. im starting to get depressed ha
  • I believe what they are refering to is setting up your system so you can dual boot to windows. Another thing you could do is use a windows emulator, if you can't find one for your mac, set your mac up to dual boot to linux and run a window emulator there. As far as games that will run on a mac without windows emulation pretty much anything made in Java will, other then that I think you are plum out of luck.

bootcamp is a boot manager software that lets you conveniently install Windows XP as a boot option for your mac. You can then play any PC game the HW lacking (especially GPU power lacking) Mac can handle.

However with Vista and DX10 here, that is no long term solution.

Newest version of Leopard OS can run Bootcamp that runs Vista.

Well, that's your first problem. you aren't going to find many games for the mac at a gamestop. Go to an Apple Store. Now, this is not to say (I must reiterate) that there are the same amount of games for mac as there are for pc. However there are quite a lot. Besides WoW and shadow bane you can also play Prey, Doom III, Quake 4, All Sims games, Civilization games (and Alpha Centauri... an old game but a favorite, Age of Empires, Halo, Call of Duty 2, etc.

Go to www.insidemacgames.com for some other sources. However, there are plenty of games. If you don't use boot camp and you are one of those gamers who have a huge library then yes, you are screwed. But a lot of A titles as well as some really great small studio titles make it to mac. but I have quite a large library of mac games (most older games such as Tomb Raider games, X-Files, Myst, etc). Also, the warcraft games (all blizzard games actually) are for mac.

I'm glad (lineage 2 player here as well).

I've always loved the Mac and am an avid fan. Let me know how it works with some of the newer games. Thanks!

the future of Apple and video games is fine, it just doesn't involve the Apple OSX. Now that Apple uses the Core 2 Duo, there's absolutely no incentive for game makers to make an Apple version.  Linux will see official versions now before Apple ever will.

Isn't it funny that when it runs on 1, it runs on the other?

Plenty of Indy MMOs run on the Linux and/or Mac platforms.  Those are the better MMOs anyways... you don't want these big releases, they're just bad windows bloatcode.

Please, by all means post some examples of these great Indy mmos which are better than the big releases on Windows.

Well, there is already an infrastructure in place to create (or port) games for the OS X platform so I'm pretty sure that we will still see them.

well you have anything(almost) written in java,  including wurmonline.

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
