Reason for Playing?

FloydFloyd Member Posts: 1

Me and my friends are looking for our first mmorpg to buy and play.  I've been looking around and I think this game looks fun but I wonder how long I could play it.  With games like Diabo 2, that we've played for years, item collection is a driving force.  What is there in CoH that motivates you to play and kill stuff.  Is it only to lvl up?  If anyone is/was an avid Diablo fan could post their views it'd be great.  Thx

This comparison is how i see CoH(note its only my personal opinion)

If eq is the mmo = to balders gate(ie all the quests, stats and stuff)

Then CoH is the mmo = of diablo 2(alot simpler more action orientated)

city 0f hero's does not so much have the item collection but it does have what it calls enhancments that you collect from fighting that you use to improve your powers.

If item collection has been the main driving force for you and your friends in diablo though i think CoH might be a bit of a let down from that side of things.

For item collection style games you should look into some of the older games like EQ(the ultimate in item collection IMHO) AO or Doac.

If any of you have broardband i recomend you download the trials of games like AO and DoAC to see what you think of them if you think they to slow and beardy then CoH will prob be a game you will enjoy its just how long for will be the question.

Right now my brother bought the game and he has really enjoyed playing it.  The graphics are nice and the character creation system is fabulous.  As for collecting items and things, there isn't alot of that to be had in CoH.  It is more of the improving of your powers.  I think I remember hearing something about some small items though that you can collect to enhance your character's powers, but don't quote me on that.

If you enjoy powerleveling up to the "end game" then CoH probably isn't the game for you. I see no end game at this time, and even if there is, I don't see a why. Once you have the best enhancements on your powers, what reason is there to keep playing that character? There is no risk (who cares if you are in debt when your level is maxed) or reward (once you get all your enhancements). It will eventually have some PvP which could give many a reason to keep playing, but I am not much of one for PvP.

But, if you are someone who likes fast paced battle and a good story, then this might be your game. It seems to me this game isn't so much about reaching the "end game" but more about enjoying the trip to max level. My highest level character is 10 (I had higher in less time in beta). It isn't that leveling is hard or tedious, it is that I keep trying out new characters (building them is half the fun), and I have yet to settle on just one. So, while I don't yet see the end game, I can see playing multiple characters to higher levels (hopefully fewer than I am playing right now) and having fun for a long time to come. Of course, lately I have been gaming much more casually, and with CoH I don't feel the absolute need to play every spare second I have to stay ahead of the game (but I do think about the game a lot when I am not playing it, half the time coming up with ideas for new heros)

So, the gameplay is great, I hear grouping is great (I haven't grouped yet), soloing is doable (very doable depending on your template) and fun, graphics and sound are very good, AI is pretty good (well above average), the stories are very good, and the character customization is second to none.

    ..reason for playing.

because its plain fun to me.

As mentioned before the character creation is amazing. Enough to spend hours only to create the visual appearance of your toon.

Its merely a hack and slay online game than a roleplaying game. But its nice done and once you reached max lvl. no prob just create your next char and go ahead.

My reason for playing isn't to level or accumulate stuff, it's to imagine I'm a hero in a big city. With the quality of the graphics and even the layout of the city, it's easy to get into the fantasy. I find myself feeling compelled to stop gangs and purse snatchers, even when it isn't worth my time for the XP, just because that's what a hero does. It's a form of wish fulfillment. You wanna be a superhero? Here's your outlet.

Not everyone's into that kind of stuff though, some just like well-crafted virtual worlds and leveling to gain new powers and abilities, which this game is as well suited for as any other. There's still "money" and "loot", but it works a little differently and it's called something else.

Character creation is amazing, hands down the best I've ever seen in any game, MMORPG to single player. The combat system is very well done too, more like that of Knights of the Old Republic than EQ. And you can fly! You can get your first flight power, Hover, at level 6, and although it only allows you to slowly drift, it still lets you fly. I spent a lot ot time chasing blimps, standing on ledges and the tops of huge statues...just looking down at the city below me...it's really cool. :)

When you are a kid everyone dreams about superheroes and idolizes them.........hell now you have a chance to play one, get out there and have fun doing it, just enjoy yourself, dont pl through the game and make it crap.

Its very far away from the average mmorpg, which is it's strength but at the same time hurts it.  Since the fan base is not really super hero fans, or hack n slash fans, but mmorpg fans.  Alot are even mmorpg fans who are also comic fans.

That said, if you look to compare it to other mmorpgs it comes short in alot of areas and in some it doesn't even compete at all.  Although in alot of areas it blows other mmorpgs away.  It is hard to rate this game in the terms of an mmorpg, something like Planetside.  If you think too much about it as an mmorpg rather than an online game you might be dissapointed.

A very different kind of game that is plain fun because of its look, feel, and combat.  All of which are sleek.  You'll want to keep playing because of the story and increase in power of your character.  And that won't come in the form of items or item rewards.  If you can get around that then you won't have a problem playing this game for a long time.

That's actually a good comparison; not so much because CoH looks or feels like Diablo2, but because its atmosphere - missions given and plotlines followed, quick leveling, not that many stats shown to the player but with a continuous rise in power and difficulty - certainly resembles it.

I do think it's got a lot more depth than people give it credit for. That is, while CoH -is- very simple on the surface, and very easy to play, there is much flexibility behind the scenes, and well drawn storylines that mesh well with the overall artistic approach and the graphics engine.

To me it seems like Grand Theft Auto + Diablo 2 - loot = CoH.

Still a lot of fun though.

I'm also a big Diablo fan. There's no game that could compare with it. Diablo have the most rare diverse items I ever seen in any game. The Skills tree is also awesome. It's everything CoH is not. I think it would be better for you to wait until World of Warcraft come out in Augest.

CoH is a great game and I'm really enjoying it at the moment. It's very action oriented. The combat system is the best for mmorpg right now. Missions does get more interesting as your lvl grows higher. There're also some stories and connection to different missions you do if you read it, which many people don't. People play CoH simply because it's easy to play and get in to it; the combat system is very very fun.

If you're looking for something different than you should try CoH. If you're looking for somthing similar to Diablo2 than wait for World of Warcraft, not Guild war because Guild war is boring.

Guild Wars is going to be a lot like Diablo2. I wouldn't compare Diablo2 to CoH at all. To me they are quite different. Someone mentioned GTA3 which is a much better comparison. It's like a MMOG GTA3 without being able to take over and/or drive cars or beat up on innocent people. Mission systems between CoH and GTA3 are very similar. A sense of a big open world in an urban setting is present in both of them. If you want a comparison, that would be a little better except no end game in CoH.
