PotBS was in development before the first PotC movie was even out, so your whole theory was just shot to hell.

It's true that it was in development prior to the movie's release...but that doesn't mean that the design direction hasn't changed at all due to the popularity of the movies...I'm not saying that it necessarily has, but the game HAS seen massive changes in the last couple of years (I've been watching the game since March of 2004)

The game hardly has anything to do with fantasy and magic though, which is what PotC is based around.  The game is very much leaning toward the realistic side of everything.  It's unfortunate that there are going to be three dozen variations on the name "Jack Sparrow", and just as many people with a ship named "The Black Pearl".

I very much doubt that the game was designed with any of the movies in mind.  In fact, if I were developing a game based around the age of sail, I'd be pretty spiteful about the whole PotC thing.

Like I've seen in many signatures on the boards there - PotC is a game about pirates.  PotBS is a game -with- pirates.

    /agree!

I think after the potc movies had such a huge success the PotBS devs recieved a huge funding boost.  I remember back in the day when they were going to make a mmo naval combat simulator for players with high end graphic cards and *gasp!* broadband only!  All the avatar combat, missions, user submitted sails/flags/ships, land exploration, crafting and economy has been added since the original game plans.

Personally I love how the game's goals have expanded since it first entered in development .  It can be sorta depressing the way most mmorpgs release tons of hype and promises then fail to deliver and end up cutting this and that before a shady release.    Not in potbs though!

No, the movies have had no influence on Pirates of the Burning Sea. This game was in development years before the Disney movies were even made.

Take the time to actually go to the PoBS forums and website. Its a "HISTORICALLY" based game with lots of RvR/PvP. It is not a fantasy game, you'll find no sea monsters or ghosts or pirate zombie/skeletons here. The PoBS forums are full of older players that actually know a great deal about sailing and naval history. So much so, that community members are creating historically accurate 3D ship models that have been approved for use in-game.

Disney on the other hand, did create a fantasy pirate game based on their pirate movies that is completely fantasy based with a World of Warcraft cartoon look to it.

Its possible to find ghosts and the likes. because in that time people where very suppesticuous, so if you are going to look for ghosts, its possible you may find something like that. But you have to believe in them.

Please read my post carefuly. There are no ghosts, animated skeletons or sea monsters in the MMO Pirates of the Burnning Sea. I have been following it's development for over 4 years.

i believe that you followed it for a long time. also did I, not as long, but at least for 2 years. They only made public that it is possible to find ghosts if you believe the stories and go look for them. there are screenshots of ghosts as well. i will look for them ;)

one of the screenshots, will look for a better one:

But, with PotBS, the few superstitious stories are not central to the game. Unlike in PotCO, where you have to go grind on animated flowers, zombies, sea monsters, and crazy voodoo ladies.

At the point and time that game takes place many sailors/pirates belived in things like ghost ships and sea monsters. Now are we as players going to fight a giant Kraken I dont think so but there are going to be supernatural quests in the game, but others on this thread have said as well as the Devs on the Burning Sea Forum, They will be hard to find and you will have to belive in the supernatural to find them.. Wich leads me to belive there may be a story lined quest that unlocks the supernatual. ( just my idea) If I am remebering right all the supernatul stuff happens around the burmuda triangle.

Also keep in mind that just because there are supernatural things in the game, that doesn't mean it was because of PotC.

Sailors were superstitious.  Many believed in these myths and legends.  Heck, even today there are many sailors that are still superstitious.  The ocean is just as unexplored as space.. there are a lot of things we don't know about the deepest parts of it.  It only seems right that superstitions would be put into a game about sailing.

I doubt that the movies had much effect on the game itself.

But yes my personal interest is somewhat increased by those movies, due to the fact that I really enjoyed them, and it reawakened the scabbarous dog inside my soul, I long for a game which will let my inner skallywag express himself.
