The World of Warcraft Addiction.....Stupid....My thoughts..

I dont mean to flame or anything like that.  But, this addiction with warcraft is retarted.  Why does everyone take it so serious.  Why choose WoW to be the one to talk about? Theres meny other games with people addict to it that play it 24/7.  Im only 15 i play football i go to school i make decent grades ,but i dont understand this.  Its retarted to be addicited to this game.  Like, Selling you couch or sellin anything for Wow.  IF YOU DONT HAVE THE MONEY FOR A GAME DONT PLAY IT.. I didnt start playing MMOs till i got a job.  I play Games when i come home from a hard days work ,or A hard day of football or weightlifting.  I know all people dont have these interest and stuff.  But, if u want to play the game so bad atleast get a job for it.  Dont lose what u already have for this game.  I play WoW and i know when to get off.  I mean Stayin up and skippin work for a game is it worth it? You dont have to quit a game u love so much just dont play it for the whole day.  U May think what im sayin is stupid or offensive.  Im just sayin how can u treat a game like crack or weed? Its okay to spend a couple of hours on the game. just like watching a movie or watching t.v. I just think the news has gone to far with this addiction. If parents really cared they would cancel the subscription... no its not a harsh way to end it lol...ur just stoppin him from playin a game...and if they go crazy SMACK EM DOWN! BE THE PARENT ... well that wat my mom and dad would do if i didnt litsen to em.. well these are my thoughts... on the warcraft addiction...  I live in the country ... down south and i have no friends near me so i cant really do anything since i dont have a car yet.. i use mmos to waste my time when im done with everything i need to do.

That's great that you are not addicted. We are all so proud of you. Glad you decided to share that with us. I have a subscription to WoW. But I may only play twice in a week. Maybe for 1-2 hours at a time. I have no need to play all day and all night. But yes there are people out there that play all the time. But who cares. It doesn't bother me how long anyone plays. It's not my life. I don't care. So why should you care?

    It's retarded, not retarted.

and yes game addiction is ridiculous, but sadly easy to acquire and very difficult to lose.

First: Don't use so many smiles in a post, it just ruins the post.

To the topic. Game addiction is in my opinion something that the older generation has made up because they are afraid of something that they can't control. They don't have any idea what it's and is scared about it. It's nature of human to be scared about something new that you don't know the effects of.

Ofc there may be some rare cases where WoW addiction exists, but overall, no. In the end I don't think it's a problem. Sure, it may exist in some rare cases, but it's uncommon and is no real problem.

I totally agree, when people say the game's 'addictive' I think they tend to mean that it's really fun and they don't want to stop playing it, not that they're actually addicted, I wouldn't be surprised if this is just some farce by media or some sort of group that just doesn't have enough time on their hands, this never used to be an issue before, I just reckon it's because the media can't dig up anything good on the politicians or wars anymore so they just look for somewhere else to cause trouble hehe.

Give it a couple of years and all those idiot psychiatrists will get proven wrong or told to shut up and we can all go back to the normal times of gaming where developers aren't restricted by stupid companies who try to flaunt power they don't really have.

Quoting people doesn't make you clever, in fact, it makes you all the more stupid for not bothering to read the quotes you post in the first place.

Wow is one of (Did not say THE) but one of the most popular MMOs out there right now, there have been shows that mention it episodes based on it (South Park) so it is the up front choice to pick to be the Addiction scape goat :)

Yeah it's true, people are just looking at it because it's popular, but like I said, they'll get bored of it, remember my dad saying the same type of thing happened with rock and roll, that was blamed by people who said that it was causing behaviour problems then people shut up about it, it'll happen to gaming too and I personally can't wait because I hate people who take games too seriously.

If the OP hadn't had his "Shield of Smilies" up he would have been done in by the irony of the part of the statement you quoted.

So what you are saying is that you don't understand something that is a reality?

Well...people can be addicted to substances such as crack or other drugs, they can even become addicted to something like chocolate! Even sugar, hell even food for that matter!! And people can become addicted to such things as gambling and sex. Addiction is real and there are many people affected by unfortunately. There is help for people with all sorts addictions, and yes, even support for persons addicted to MMO's. Its a reality kid.

Perhaps your chemicals in yer brain are workin' right and your parents brought you up well so you may never know what its like. But if you ever did have any sort of addiction I'd like for you to come back to your post here.

    Glad I could help

How nice.... Here's a fact for you, I played World of Warcraft for 2 years, often going up until the early hours of the morning, then I quit. Sure, there maybe some out there who are addicted, but to go and point at the whole playerbase and say they are ALL addicted? That's just plain stupid, furthermore I consider it wrong, it's just a game, how can people take it so seriously? If they do, they must either really hate their life or there emotionally fragile and already have something wrong with them in the first place if it really could effect them, I wish people would quit being so pathetic, it's a game, it isn't drugs or sex.

Addiction is defined as a compulsive need for a substance (or game) and you have psychological and physical symptoms with withdrawal. Meaning that when you quit it, you freak out and can't go through life normally. IF you can just quit something with no withdrawal symptoms, you simply are not addicted. It's just a habit. Addiction is not playing something for numerous years. People say that they are addicted because they either want an excuse to come back to it (like they are psychologically addicted, and the habit of playing is becoming a problem but their lives generally aren't affected) or they just like the idea of being addicted to something. Honestly, those are the best reasons I could come up with as to why someone would say they are addicted. Unless you are misinformed and simply think that addiction is just doing something for a long time (which is actually just a habit.)

I actually really appreciate that explanation Gotrede, because there are clearly some people who just can't tell the difference and I hate how seriously this is all being taken, it's one of the reason games are so lowly valued these days, no one puts as much care as they used to into making them because they think players are just mindless drones sitting at a computer all day. I remember when I first played Baldurs Gate 2 and Oblivion, Oblivion I was just mesmerized by because of how beautiful and well put together everything looked and Baldurs Gate 2 because of how rich the storyline and lore was, no one seems to be making those kind of games anymore though, I don't know why, it's not that they're impossible to make, it can actually be fun making them. As a 3D artist I myself don't have experience of making games (yet) but I can safely say, building a world out of nothing feels like when I first started playing with lego when I was a kid, it just feels so gratifying and I don't understand why developers don't try harder personally.

I just don't understand how people can say a game is addictive, it's just that, a game, even with an old game called puzzle bobble or lemmings (which I can play for hours regardless of how old it is) I didn't find that addictive, I just played it, then when I decided I had enough I quit, I just treat them as games, not as business opportunities or second jobs, I just don't understand how people can take it so seriously, it's just wrong to me really, it's why I looked at World of Warcraft and then the raiding and how that was going to be a main part of the game, I just thought "No thanks" because I knew it would be nothing more than a second job to me that I don't get paid for.
