Which Class?

Crispy1513Crispy1513 Member Posts: 21
Which class would you say is for me? I love dual wielding so I want a class that is one of the best dual wielders, I like high agility, I prefer frontal attacks over back attacks, however, I wouldn't mind having a class that could sneak behind and attack and then go into frontal attacks after a back attack, and I don't want to be a tank.

Thanx for any help!

P.S. I also would like to know if you think this is a good game because I'm not sure if I want to buy it or not.

Being new myself the best class I can think of for duel wielding is Nin, but you have to get level 30 in a different job before getting that. Someone else would be better at answering that question for you.

Personally I'm loving this game and I think well worth the money spent. Give it a try and see what you think.

Only one class can Dual Wield, and that's Ninja. So you either have to be ninja main or have ninja as a subjob. Dual Wield is learned at lvl 10.

If you really want to Dual Wield, your only real options are: NIN, WAR/NIN, THF/NIN and BLU/NIN. I'd say THF/NIN is your best bet. NIN is expected to tank. WAR/NIN sure isn't a sneaky job with high agility.

You will be forced to level ninja wich will force you to tank because levelling ninja will also mean levelling war, again more tanking.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

First, this the probably the best game ever made, imo. The game is VERY fun, it has the best community out there, etc etc etc.

Classes, as you call them, are called jobs in FFXI. You MUST start with one of the basic ones. If you change your mind after you chose a job to start with, this isn't any problem at all - in FFXI you use 1 character to switch any time between jobs you wanna play/lvl. There are 6 basic jobs to choose between:

    1. WAR - Warrior
    2. MNK - Monk
    3. THF - Thief
    4. WHM - White Mage
    5. RDM - Red Mage
    6. BLM - Black Mage

After you hit lvl 30, you can start unlocking the so-called "advanced jobs". There's a total of 12 (18 jobs in game incl basics), and you need all the expansions to get them all. Not a problem since this game is now sold as a bundle with all 3 exp packs.

As others said earlier here, NIN (Ninja) is the only job with Dual Wield. NIN is probably a job you will have to wait a bit with - it's quite expensive to lvl since you have to buy lots of "tools" (shihei, etc). The only job which has a sneak attack from behind, is THF. After THF reaches lvl 30 (i think), you learn Trick Attack. Sneak Attack / Trick Attack, called SATA, makes a THF a very good DD in a party.

As Rpro say, a NIN is usually expected to tank, but you MUST have WAR as subjob to do that. Which means that if you wanna lvl NIN, you would have a hard time without lvling WAR at the same time, and even more problems if you don't wanna be a tank.

This is how I recommend you to play, after reading what you want/don't want to do, since i believe THF/NIN is the job for you:

    1. Do NOT starts as a Tarutaru if you wanna be a melee/fighter. I highly recommend Hume, since it's just as good for melee as for mage, if you wanna try that later.
    2. Start with either THF or WAR and solo it to lvl 12. Then swith and lvl the other job to 12. It will be a bit of boring, but it will be worth doing both before progressing. To save money on equips, you can switch between them several times and use most of the same stuff for both.
    3. At lvl 12, take your WAR job to Valkurm Dunes and get a party. Even though you don't like it, expect to be a tank till you have it lvld to 18. At lvl 18 it's time to stop, but continue if you have fun, or wanna get a so-called "exp buffer". Ask your party about subjob quest items, and hold on to what you can get. You need: Damselfly Worm, Crab Apron & Magicked Skull.
    4. Get the subjob quest done (get in-game help for it if the items didn't drop earlier) and change to THF12/WAR6. Subjob will never be higher than half of your main job, except from when main is lvl 1, which also means that when THF becomes lvl 14, /WAR will become lvl 7, since it's actually lvl 18 and you raised the subjob cap.
    5. Go back to Valkurm Dunes and lvl THF to 20 or so. Then just do as everyone else, and continue lvl THF at least to 30. Then get the NIN job unlocked. You WILL need help with this. (Btw, make sure you get the chocobo licence after lvl 20!!!)
    6. Lvl NIN to 37 if you can afford it. You WILL have to sub WAR and you WILL have to tank, again.
    7. Then the fun begins for real, due to your specifications.
    8. Switch to THF/NIN and lvl it all the way. You'll be THF75/NIN37, and will be able to get there without ever being a tank again.

Of course, during this progress, you should take your time to do what ever you want just for fun, including do quests, explore, experiment with other jobs, do BCNMs for money, etc. Also, do a few of the missions in your hometown as early as possible. This will prolong the effect of signet. You will probably not understand what I'm talking about now, but you will once you start playing.

Quite a long and somewhat detailed suggestion, but due to what you ask for, this is really the only way I can recommend. But don't be so afraid to be a tank. Tanking in FFXI is NOT like in WoW, EQ2, or anything else I've played.

This post is obviously late for the OP, but for those of you who like to Melee, the best path is as follows:

Step 1. Level Monk to 18, Complete Sub-job Quest.

Step 2. Level Warrior/Monk to 37 (In this span of time, it's also suggested to get Thief/(Monk or Ninja) to 37 as well

    Step 3. Unlock Ninja

    Step 4. Level Ninja/Warrior to 37

    Step 5. Level Warrior/Ninja from 37-75

Keep Great Axe and One handed Axe skill leveled. In the early levels you'll do marginal tanking, but post 40, Warrior becomes a heavy DD. At level 55 Warrior gains access to the Weapon Skill "Rampage" which is going to be your bread and butter til 75. WAR/NIN Dual Wields with Axes or Axe/Sword, and WAR/THF (level 30+) uses Great Axe for Sneak Attack + Sturmwind, and etc.
