When should i submit my MMO to mmorpg.com

me and a small collection of programmers, artists, and wannabe's are in the process of developming an MMO that i've been conceptualizing for a couple of years now. Only recently (early this year) did i get it out of my head, make a website, and start putting things on paper (and program)

When should i start making things more public? I dont want to be one of those games that seems to take forever to come out, simply because it was publicized too early, but on the other hand, i wouldn't mind some more attention.

EDIT: A couple people have asked, so i'l say this. Preliminary information on this "IN DEVELOPMENT" game can be found at http://www.primalminds.com but like i said, it's IN DEVELOPMENT. I didn't make this post to advertise it, or ask input just yet.

Please refer to the faq for our requirements a MMO has to meet before it can be listed on MMORPG.com.

there is an part within the FAQ on this site about adding sites. This is the minimun. You migth want to see if that is enough for you. However it would completly depence on your marketing strategy.  If you want to Hype the game you migth want to start doing this a long time in advange. Disadvantage is that this can actualy backfire if you give to much information with poeple might dislike and not enough information poeple might like.

You could give information with you know poeple will like to moderatly hype the game. Give some information once every while. Last option is what I like is just release it when you have it as good as done. When its late Alpha stage, so you can inform poeple correctly what you game will become, without greating an to big hype beforehand meaning that poeple will less likely disapointed.

Disclaimer: I have in no way expierence in this kind of stuff.

Thank you for your quick reply. I would ask clarification on one point though.

Requirement: 500 or more simultaneous players in one world.

What does it take to get your game listed as "Development". I dont have 500 people on staff as in-house testers, but i doubt any MMO does. Are these advertised games only?

I think he's refering to capability.

My suggestion is to be further along then you have to be to start advertising... just my suggestion though.

That's kinda rude... let this man create his dream.

At least he's not (yet) here on the boards claiming to have some huge revolutionary game that will topple WoW.

Or here asking for help that he can put his name on.

He found his own friends to do work with a similar dream they've put together.  You should be saying "Thank you for being an Indy Dev, you guys rock, the big wigs see your projects and copy it with a larger budget!"...

But hey, you do what you do.  But at least he has the drive to help the situation.

In my humble opinion, you should wait until your game is in a state where you can bring in Alpha testers. Further, you should have a clear and realistic timeline/plan for when you will enter a Beta and finally release stage. If these are more than 2 years from your initial Alpha I would wait until you are within 2 years time.

I say all of this for one purpose: do not build up hype and expectation for your game if you are not ready to make it playable for the public. You will squander that resource if you cannot go live within a realistic timeframe, and eventually serious gamers will simply disregard you as a casual dreamer.

    That's my 2cp.

Really, if you don't understand that the following statement is refering to a sisgle "SERVER" load...

"500 or more simultaneous players in one world."

... you are probably not ready to tell anyone about your game.

I've actually conceptualized an online solitaire game, even broken down the anti-cheat methods and client reporting that would be required... everything. However no, this game i'm speaking of is not Solitaire: Online.

Truth be told, the game is in a very early development stage. If anyone is interested, you can find more info about the game at http://www.primalminds.com , but i'm not here to advertise it. Most of the development is in the password-protected wiki, and on our local machines.  Chosing what to make public, even on our website that nobody knows about, is tough.

I thank you all for your input, except for the guy who misunderstood my second post and assumed i didn't know what a server load was.

All I see is a floating Tree.

I don't mean to be rude, but I don't think MMORPG.com needs more vaporware in it's develoment section.

I wonder about the website support.  Does Vangaurd currently offer support on their website?  They current have no forums, but other people can support the game with forums.  But this seems to disqualify Vangaurd from currently being listed....

Show me it when it is ready for testing.

Cool. Remove Vanguard. Problem solved and rule upheld.

Actually you do mean to be rude, otherwise you would have noticed when i said "I didn't make this post to advertise it, or ask input just yet.". The purpose of this post was to gather information, not ask permission to list my game, or show it off in any way. You could have also read the news articles or FAQ at my site to find out that that "floating tree" (which is in fact firmly attached to the ground) is from a test environment, which has nothing to do with my game.

So please dont disclaim yourself, pretending that your protecting the integrity of this site with your ignorant slander.

    Hi Kileran,

I think its great that you are in the early stages of development. Ignore the trolls that come here to  this site. As someone who has been a gamer a long time I know that you will need a bit of support. Now I do understand why some mmo players would be cautious when a new mmo surfaces. Good example is Dark and Light  ect. Many people got burned on that.

I do believe if you are honest and you let the MMORPG staff know where you stand that they may come to a arrangement. I personally would stay on it. Be persistant. Also if this is your first mmo I would set development dates. I plan to have this done by "blah blah" date. Alpha begins at"blah blah" date.

If you are having troubles in development I would recommend throwing the mmo towards some sponsers. Get sponsers to help.

I wish you the best. Hope it works out well.

We were in this same boat about a year ago. We had finally got out of the concept stage after over a year. We had finished putting most of everything we had down on paper, formalizing the company and all of that. We came to the conclusion that we may want to start thinking about marketing. We started asking questions first and this is the same point at which you find yourself in now. We are a fairly small company as well (20 on so on the team). We started asking questions to sites just like this and to other "more experienced" development teams. We even contacted a couple "pro" elite designers (who i'll not name) to get some insight. We decided over all it was best to hold off until we had a lot more to show since you only get one first impression. We were also advised to get at least one game conference under our belt at least (we're at 2 now). Clear defined documents, estimation dates all help. Good luck with your game.
