Minny ships are very versatile and can be very forgiving of skills. Most minny ships can be either shield or armor tanked, they have a natural resistance to energy vampires, and they are naturally fast. The Rifter is an excellent ship for almost any kind of gameplay. Stabber is a very fast cruiser class ship excellent for solo PvP or solo, so is the Typhoon battleship.
However if you want to do missions (PvE), there is only 1 way to go - Caldari ships. If you want to seriously PvP - go with Gallente ships.
Gallente hands down, its not even close. They are beasts and tackle well.
Mini ships can be fun, but they are a pain in the but they are the least versitial. Thats right see, while they all do a ton of junk, you need to have the skills to back that up, its easy to buy a ship, a gun , but its not easy to get your drones, armor, shield, missle, and projectial skills to 5/5. If you are gallente or caldari all you need is 3 or 4 weapon/tank sets to 5/5 , minis need 5. Thats not fun or versitail.
Caldari are fun for their passive tankign abilit , but use of missles, missles, missles, missles, and a rare arti ship makes for long range slow battles.
Get gallente , its worth it.
(ps i fly both caldair and mini)

Rokh. I like how the Rokh looks, I think is the best design Caldari has. Taking into consideration all the other designs are ugly. Although, you can get used to them. I use the Drake, my Raven is still catching dust in a corner of my hangar, until I get money for the insurance.
drake is awesome gunboat with great resists,i use all the time for missions, for pvp it's kinda ok missiles are kinda slow but turn it into a ewar ship with a fleet and it rocks again.
i find i like my gallente nano-domi for pvp close range better , i know it's a classic set-up but still good in the age of new ships .
hmmm not sure what the poor amarr ships are good for these days.

Not a gunboat... It doesn't have turrets hard points. I call it a missile pod. I think is great for PvP, but then it always depends on fitting and personal preference.
I think minny ships are the most "fun" mostly because of their speed. Caldari are the best at PVE (especially when you're newer to the game) and Gallente are the best at PVP with low skills (and even with high skills they're still very very good, in fact the Gallente BC's dish out the most damage, period). With High skills any race's ships are good though.

I disagree caldari can be pretty good at PvP, especially if you have decent ECM skills.

"Decent ECM Skills"
And you need to be able to fly a decent ECM Ship:
Read Scorpion, Falcon or Rook.
IE: A realitely highly skilled player
The Blackbird is "decent" at ECM but it's really not all that great unless you have VERY good ECM skills.
I fly Caldari... yes they're decent at PVP. But Gallente, Minmatar and Amarr are easier to fly in PVP at lower skill levels than Caldari, imo. Primarily because caldari ships are slow, and most of their bonuses are to range for guns so they suffer on the damage arc. Their GOOD ships are mostly missile boats and anyone who has ever flown a missile boat in PVP will tell you:
GREAT in a gang or fleet.
Not so hot in solo.
Caldari also suffer because we're shield tankers which means fitting Web/Scram on our ships means we have to weaken our tank. So most Caldari ships are not going to be keeping the enemy from running away. Both because we can't stay in range to keep an enemy locked down because they just outrun us and/or because most pilots just don't bother fitting it because it weakens the tank to much.
(with the exception of a very few caldari ships, that is).
I'm not saying caldari ships are bad at PVP. I fly Drakes, Rooks and Cormorants in PVP myself. And have even used Caracals in the past. But the other races ships ARE easier to use in PVP because of the way they're configured.

I can fly all races spread across my two main chars. Both chars are primarily specialised in another race, but I always seem to end up flying Minmatar ships like the Vagabond. Sabre, Muninn etc. Must say I like the other race t2 specialised ships as well, like arazu, falcon, deimos and pilgrim for example. Mostly, choose ship class, the preferred race within that class. Just so happens that within medium and small class the minmatar ships are exellent and often the most fun to fly.

Caldari: Kestrel, Crow, Drake...
Gallente: Brutix and Myrmidon look nice...
Minmatar: Rifter, Cyclone, the Probe as small and fast freighter...

oh yeah, raise some hell in that baby.
but yeah I love not being out of ammo just because my cap it out.
even if only gives me like 20 secsa of extra firepower, I want to go down in a blaze of glory
