Lord of the Rings Online: Monster Play Overview

Lord of the Rings Online gives an overview of Monster Play. This is a unique take on PvP which allows players to act as monsters in the game and fight against characters.

Monster play. Often spoken of in hushed and fearful tones over a pint of ale, some believe the stories, while other stalwarts consider them simply fireside tales told to frighten wide-eyed young hobbits. Now you'll learn the truth!

You've read all about the Ettenmoors, home to monster play in The Lord of the Rings OnlineTM: Shadows of AngmarTM (LOTRO). You've heard tales from our Beta Program participants about their adventures on the wild side. You've said to yourself, well, how does one begin this dark journey? The following overview will tell you everything you need to know to get started!

What is Monster Play?

LOTRO offers a unique form of player vs. player combat known as monster play. Players are transported to the Ettenmoors, a consensual PvMP (Player vs. Monster Player) region about the size of the Shire. Here, the Free Peoples and the forces of Angmar are in constant active conflict, and players can choose to join the fight as either their normal Free Peoples character, or as one of the servants of the Enemy!

I've never liked PvP in any game, but I have to say, monster play is probably one of my favorite parts of LOTRO. It might not be considered 'hardcore PvP', but it's a lot of fun and there have been some great keep raids and pretty epic battles in closed beta.

When scary things get scared, that's bad...

It sounds like great fun, maybe I should think about trying this game out!

oh my god, what are you guys? LODR developers trying to make some commercial for the game to get better sales numbers ?

"maybe I should think about trying this game out"

sorry but this sounds like a dev to me trying to manipulate players to buy this average game...

this game is nothing but average and thats a fact... nothing really new and will propably fail like vanguard saga of vanbois...

Im glad that Im not the only one who feels this way and that players are smarter these days and instead of wasting your money on vanguard, lord of the rings online or any other "average" game, take your girlfriend out, go to the cinema with her instead of wasting your money on half finished piece of crap games...

what I have found about myself is that my requirements to a mmorpg are just too high for games like lodr online or vanguard, but thats just me and Im propably the only one who feels like that right? :)

I got reasons to write stuff like that and you guys will soon realise what I mean...

    SOE and NGE-Star Wars Galalaxies:
Raph Koster: "It's like dumping the girlfriend who has always been patient and loving to chase after the supermodel who probably won't love you back."

LOTRO may be average in mechanics, but its storyline, quests, and crafting are some of the best I've seen. The only reason I'm not going to play right away is because I love EVE Online too much...

Yes it may be considered average because its built to play sorf of like WoW, but then again most new MMOs will be too. WAR's UI looks like LOTRO's and WoWs.... its the 'standard'.

Oh, and "sorry, this sounds to me like a troll who has never played the game is trying to tell others how crappy the game is when he never tested it himself"

    Currently: Playing EVE Online
Previous: FFXI, Dragonrealms, sad little stint in WOWland.
Awaiting: Fallen Earth, Hero''s Journey, Tabula Rasa, Age of Conan.

I didn't try MP until the last few days of closed beta, by that time I had a butt load of points to spend and was able to really deck out a couple beasts. It was a good time, as long as there were enough players to enable you to actually do the quests. I can't say it was the best part of the game but it was a good way to waste a few hours. (Now I'm off to collect my payoff from an unmentionable game developer, yep, say a few nice things - get a check. Sure beats busting a vein bitching about all the evils and stupidity of the online experience. blah. blah. blah. snore!)

In this thread of the LOTRO boards of this site a dev said:

I am stating this because people that have not played the game need to hear the truth.
Player incentive is priority one for the monster play team, and has been stated numerous times as we wind towarf the end of our closed beta period. We recognize the needs and are working toward providing players with incentives which should endear them more to the area and the cause of the Free People in the Ettenmoors.

Monster players are deliberately designed to be weaker than players. This weakness can be overcome through the sheer number advantage they are likely to have over normal players in the area. As monster players become more potent and achieve greater rank, the difference in their ability to stand toe-to-toe with a player increases and the advantage players enjoy against newer monster players diminishes.  So, yes, you are seeing that 2-3 monster players are needed to fight against a player. As heroes are the main focus of the game, we made certain that the players felt a little more heroic than the villains.

So essentially the Dev is admitting PvMP has no incentive for players to show up at the moment.  Also, the Dev admits PvMP is tailor made for the monsters to loose.

    Thats fun!

I'm gonna play the open beta and will found out for myself soon but I am still curious if playing as a  monster character benefits you in any way like getting rewards or is just meant for fun?

The destiny points you accumulate can be used on any of your characters.  For monsters, destiny points are used to buy your skills and traits for your rank.  For characters, destiny points are used to purchase 24 hour buffs.

i admire this monster pvp option and hope it works well - although perma-death would make it far more interesting. Any one know what the death penalties are like in LOTR online?

I for one am GLAD that certain wee kiddies find LotRO and Monster Play boring - because it confirms that the devs have done something Right.  This is a Good Thing as it keeps the little ones OUT of OUR game.

Rather than pander to the least common PVP moron factor found in other mmogs, the devs have done something original and unique and FUN for the players who appreciate and enjoy the depth and breadth of  LotRO.

To the small children who can't grasp the significance of a sophisticated system - hey go be a big mean green Orky-worky in WAR - Oh Yeah that's REAL original and all grown up - or go wet your bed and play with yourself in "hard core" pee-v-pee mmogs like Shadowbuns or DorkFall, where you can run around and "teabag" the other pre-pubescent girly-men confused about their manhood.

The sad truth is, the REAL reason you don't like monster play is because:

YOU'RE NOT FKING GOOD ENOUGH TO COMPETE with real gamers.
