Jon Wood met with the people behind NCSoft's new visual masterpiece: Aion. The game offers breathtaking graphics and much more. Find out what's behind the beautiful pictures.
Heading into E3, NCSoft had announced that they would be demoing a new game. All we knew heading in was that the games title was Aion. Other than that, we had no real details until Laura Genender and I had a chance to run through the gauntlet of NCSoft presentations.
Aion is a game being developed for the Korean market and localized at the same time for the North American market. Joey MacArthur, the Localization Manager for the game who gave us a hands-on demo later in the day, told us that they are hoping for a simultaneous launch.
My first impression of the game during the presentation for this particular title was that it was visually impressive. The environments were particularly interesting, especially when you added in their weather effects, which, as it turns out, not only look appealing, but also serve a function in the game, affecting some player skills. Fire magic, for example, doesnt work as well in the rain, and heat waves reflecting off the desert sands might impair your characters abilities. |

Not saying they stole their combat system from Everquest II, but I have played EQ2 before and that chain combat skill system works the exact(I mean exactly) the same way that they described it. When you use a skill, a second one will start flashing so you hit it and it does a chain attack, then another might flash indicating you have another skill to add to the chain. They even made it to where your party's skills will interact with each character.
Game does look neat but I seriously dought I will be playing it.

I always wanted to play In Nominae Satanis and for some reasons, it just never happen.
The setting is definitely appealing, the many servers rules let's me suppose I will maybe find a server that exclude all forms of PvP, maybe...
The first time I read their name, I was thinking...is that the RPG with that disastrous launch? But not, have no link.
It will be unable to escape the Rating M 18+ and if they manage to be successful, I would advice that they just get their team of lawyers who scare Marvel to be ready to work. Having angels and demons might draw the attention of one of the 0938392742 religious groups plaguing NA!
But, I am definitely looking forward this game now...the setting is great!
Tigris, you do realize EQ2 stole this flashing feature from the oldest electronic games? Way before there was something to be called a computer? You know, memory games...personnally I don't particuliarly enjoy this, but well, maybe, I don't dislike it either. In fact, in EQ2, beside graphics & guild stuff, there is nothing I find innovative. *shrug* In EQ2 you can barely jump...in this game you can fly, the only other MMOs featuring fly are...CoH and CoV and it was nicely done, so I expect it to be nicely done! The graphics are definitely outmatching all I have seen in current MMOs...and the thematic in Aion (which I tend to want to write Aeon, bad bad me) is just sweeet...at last a religious oriented MMO! CRUSADE!

As for Aion, I came up with a mock game design for one of my classes two years ago that's basically the same concept. I was shocked when I heard about this a few months ago. Definitely something I want to play.
If you wanna see how flying can work: Try Horizons! Shurely it could be better, but if Aion meets it, it will be nice!
On the other hand: Give me one of the dragons, and keep the angels and demons for your own!
Where did you get the Dragon pic? Was it on this site?
I'll try Aion just because it looks so gorgeous, but it sounds like NCSoft is trying some weird stuff if you read the website. Players effecting a server and deciding things like whether a server is RP? Well, it should make watching this game develop interesting if nothing else!
EDIT - My bad, I re-read the article more carefully and players won't determine if a server is RP. Players will determine the servers 'attributes' whatever those are

Actually, I think that tthat is a fancy way of saying that the servers will just be what they "become". In Lineage 2, each server is identical in concept but different because some have more pvp, some less, one has even become the unofficial roleplaying server.
Each group essentially plays how they like and the server developes its own personalityl
Probably will be the same for Aion.
Having said that I am really looking forward to this game.

I was VERY excited about the idea of the Angelic vs Demonic but I'm such an anti PVP'er that this part will
Probably ruin what I thought could be a very creative game. Being part of what is becoming the minority that dislikes PVP I'm sad to see more MMORPGs turn to that direction. This will lead me to other non-monthly fee games so I guess there is a silver lining... sorry I digress.
I was hoping for free flight (it may still come) and a way to balance the scales, or weight them in the favor of good or evil by quests and the influence of the masses... but a straight out fight, quake, doom, half-life, halo etc are more what I think of when I want a straight fight. The investment of time and effort to have someone grief me out of the time spent... ok digressing again sorry.
Anyway you get the point. Visually I love the look so far, even this early on. The potential for something a little different is high. I'm hoping to see more, but worry about the "same old pvp" game that it may become.
This is only my 2 coppers
"Common sense is NOT common!"
I can see this happening - afterall, like you pointed out servers develop their own personalities on their own. It's interesting that Aion is going to work in a game-mechanic that addresses this well-known side-effect on MMORPGs.
There was this quote from the article that needs addressing:
"Currently, in this build of the game, players are limited to a specific flight track, but we are told that there is a possibility that this would change, giving players a free-flight experience."
PLEASE give characetrs FREE-FLIGHT!
Who wants boring flight paths like in WoW? Let the characters fly wherever they want like in City of Heroes/Villains! Who else agrees with this?
This game looks hot! The graphics look out of this world and according to this article the gameplay sounds very interesting. Classic good vs evil struggle is quite typical but if the graphics and gameplay are there then it should be a great game.
One thing I am hoping for is more in depth Character customization. Lineage 2 is poor in that regards and with this game looking so good so far, it would be a shot in the foot to fall short in that department.
Looks great guys! Please don't let us down!!

Hmm It looks like Dark and light will have free flight!
but does anyone know if they will have crafting in Aion?
Specifically Tailoring!
the game looks nice but i have seen this before you bait with eye candy, but the game plays terriable
I am going to need more then eye candy to play this over some of the other bigger games coming out
I'm looking forward to hearing more about this game-- but it is probably going to be released in 2009 or something stupid like that. I'm not going to get my hopes up unless I hear a release date before 2007. I have been without a mmo for more than a few months and I need a good one RIGHT NOW! NOWWWW! (Don't make suggestions. There's nothing currently that interests me!)
So very true.
Also anymore I will make note of games however after following some for several years only to be disappointed by either the game play or they cancel I won't get emotionally involved anymore until it is very very close to release.
Still those shots are just gorgeous, I hope this one makes it.

"According to Yong Taek Bae, Associate Producer for NCsoft Seoul, there
will be none of the level-grinding which is common in Korean MMOs.
Although not fully disclosed at this time, the leveling-up system will
be different from what you would normally expect."

Lend a hand and break the chains of regularity you lean so closely upon
I do not care about PvP. But a flying char like an angel without free flight? NO WAY! Without freeflight I might try it, but I wont buy it!
Well, I played L2 (hindemith), EQ2, SWG, RF, GW and for some reason WoW but this game so far exceeds my expectations. I really like the Angels vs Demons part of the game(more into the demons side hehe) Also the PvPvE sounds appeling. LMAO, I do like the part about "each player contributes on each server story". but of course lets see what happens. Good Luck to all and see you in the future to come.
Anagaton.
Well, no one knows as it is not even in beta yet.
For a game like this it will most likely be around 50.00 USD or so (taking into account inflation) and the usual 15.00 usd or so per month. But then again, who knows. They might experiment with alternate pricing models.
