Tales of Pirates: Interview with Daniel Lin

StraddenStradden Managing EditorMember CommonPosts: 6,696

Daniel Lin, the Manager of Overseas Marketing for I.G.G., stops by to discuss their game Tales of Pirates.

MMORPG.com:

What classes are available in Tales of Pirates?

Daniel Lin:

In Tales of Pirates, each character has a variety of classes they can specialize in. When players reach level 9, they can talk to the respective NPCs to start the quest to select their basic class. When they reach level 40, they can specialize further into their basic class by doing another quest. There are ten classes in all: Swordsman, Hunter, Herbalist, Explorer, Crusader, Champion, Cleric, Seal Master, Sharpshooter and Voyager.

Read it all here.

    Thats just weird...

    ToP: Interview with Daniel Lin.

    MMORPG.com:

What is your job at Funcom? How did you get your foot in the door?

    Daniel Lin:

I was hired as an Item designer and currently I'm leading up the Items and Magic strike team here, making sure that it all fits together. My responsibilities cover managing a few excellent people on the graphic team, as well as trying to coordinate our needs with other content production team needs so that we can achieve a better workflow.

I think that getting this job was just a chain of random events, as one of the friends I made while working for Blizzard sent me a message one night saying he was going to apply for it and included the link to the job offer page. So after thinking a second, I thought why not, and sent in an application as well. After the usual processing time I was interviewed, got a job offer, moved to Oslo and started working.

    and before that...

That was a formatting error on my part, and I apologise for the confusion. The offending section has been removed.

It was pretty obvious it was an error.

A lot of lies in this interview

China for one thing doesn't even consist of island battle system, and you say a few months? seems very short time if you ask me

On the ToP website it indicates it is on the Patch 1.33, why isn't there any information at all on it? None of the monsters or maps are introduced as part of the campaign.

Also, ToP website is nothing but a rip off from http://www.piratekingonline.com

Why did the new management not even change the info?

Next, look at their forum. Their mod TOTALLY rip work off the Pirate King Online forum (http://www.piratekingonline.com/forum), and admin does not discourage any of their moderators to doing so. I believe that's a very bad management to just copy and paste, not to mention without asking.

ToP does not even bother to proof read their works. In the bug section of ToP, the manual actually say "PIRATE KING ONLINE", how can such error exist if the management bothered to read over the item descriptions on their server?

I was a former mythwar player, and you can't even fix a text bug , it still say "uSe" instead of "  use ". How are you convincing enough you'll fix bugs and not leave them rotting like mythwar?

    MMORPG.com:

Can you describe the sea combat?

    Daniel Lin:

For Tales of Pirates, it is the first and newly designed system that allows for large scale and exhilarating sea battles. As the number of participants increases, different strategies [are] utilized in fighting, [and] the battles become ever more important.

    MORE LIES.

IF you play the game, you would know only VOYAGERS has sea skills, how on earth are other classes suppose to enjoy you so call sea combat? Are you joking with me? What strategies are there if all I can do is fire normal attack?

    Prove me wrong.

    Daniel Lin:

As I said, ToP is a really success production without errors in-game, so I.G.G. brings the latest version to North American audience. It means [not much is] different so far, however, the expansion for [the] North American edition is coming and the game spotlight events are suit[able] for all North American audience[s], undoubtedly.

Why do I FAIL to see ANY so call nice events in the other games you manage? I fail to see any so call 'event' that was nice at the time you took over mythwar.

All you care is money, you took everything we had in shop and putted it on item mall and took it off inside the game, what promises you have events aren't lame and retarded winning some item that were were originally able to reach ?

    MMORPG.com:

Does ToP run on a level based system, or a skill system?

    Daniel Lin:

Well, it runs on level based [system] but skills play very important role. The level indicates the basic ability of a player, but good use of skills can sometimes play decisive role.

    ANOTHER LIE

Have you even play the game yourself? High level in this game does not mean you're god. Skills you pump points on is important, but EQUIPMENT plays a heavy role.

I fail to see how a level 70 with crap EQ and crappy build can win a level 70 with good EQ and a nice planned build
  • They didn't steal stuff from Pirate King Online.

It  IS Pirate King Online, just released with a different name for the north american market..

Crap games like this must stop, ffs.
    Ragnarok ripoff ?

Judging by the interview...haha, even the guy knows the game has nothing interesting going on.
OH GREAT, I can choose from 4 faces n 5 hairs. Awesome.
I doubt this will make any success, specially since they are not changing anything from the asian version. -.- Different markets, geez.

    Such poor Engrish.

HAHAHA IGG is a crappy company. just look at VOC they lamed that game up too. their staff all seems to be inexperinced support staff lol really sad.

as for pko or whatever the hell you want to call it.

the game SUCKS. the sea zones are boring you have to sail for hours before you find 1 sea monster then they more then likely will kill you because unlike a voyager you get no sea attack skills. which is really stupid.

the land maps are more populated but still crappy alot of clone monsters with higher levels and names

personally from my experiance closed testing PKO and from playing it for a few months after OB.

the game needs a harsh overhall.

sea areas should be heavy populated with monsters.

classes need to be fixed. swordmen get no parties at all. most useless class even as a crusader they are overlooked :/

customization needs to be increased the 4 characters are junk they should add more or add more hair/face looks you wind up with 20 people all with the same hair and face because there are only like 5 hair/face per character

and the whole drop/item mall only books to change the hair colour is crap. you need so many books, and other junk to get 1 hair job its not worth it.

last time i played faires did nothing but use up food and money which made them pointless.  the character body wings did nothing. all in all their updated version is garbage.

they have to go f2p cause as a p2p this game is dead worse then indo-rose lmao

i think VOC and POTBS are/will be better then it

I really don't understand why they have such poor english skills. As far as I know, they are an NA company. and even if they aren't, then hire someone to proof read. the whole game and website is filled with poor english, its rediculous. Games like Lineage 2 and Granado Espada prove that it doesn't have to be like that if the company is willing to put enough time in the translation. there is no excuse.
  • IchmenIchmen Member UncommonPosts: 1,228

lmao if they are na based im a space alien, IGG has the worst engish spelling and grammar. just look at a quest of VOC lol

OH and before someone things (oh 4 classes that sounds fun) what that guy failed to mention is there are 4 characters.

lance: swordmen/explorer (becomes crusader or voyager)

the big fat guy who can only be a champion after swordmen

ami the creepy girl who does herbalist and voyager

and the pirate chick who does voyager and i think herb but i forget now.

they all look the same no matter what class you pick. if your a crusader you will look the same as all the others because GEAR IS NOT CUSTOMIZABLE! and the faces and hair all seem the same as well lol

i think IGG is from singapore or something lol maybe they are mayla who knows but no way they are usa based

I downloaded this game about a week ago. I wasn't expecting anything special, because you know, it is just an Asian port and in the past, many other such games of that genre have been pretty bad.

Needless to say, there was no exception here. My first few minutes of gameplay was swamped with people with names such as 'hentai' and 'yomomma' screaming random junk across the Global Chat channel. It wasn't just that, the gameplay was equally as bad.

Thinking about giving this a go? Dont. Then again, you've probably figured that from the interview.

Played - AO, CoH/CoV, DDO, Eve, Guildwars, LOTRO, WoW.
    Waiting - For WAR, Fury.

Ya, IGG has made some mistakes, but their games are still good game, at least to me. You know, there are too many  game that are too bloody and too violent  for children and teenagers. VCO can teach people a lot about the geography and how to manager a guild and even a city. TOP and Myth War  are good companion for the kids and and teenagers. I feel very comfortable to play their game .

I have not yet played TOP, but I think their marketing director is not to be blamed. He or she is just a marketing director, not a developer, you can not expect him to get all the knowledge of their new game. Don't be too tough on them.

But I hate the web site of IGG. There is always something wrong with their website, incomplete information, awful visual effect, terrible translation, tasteless events ( if you can call that a event ).

Guys,  just stop complaining and please take a look at the game itself. Don't you think it boasts a cute and lively graphic design? I admit  some text errors and part of the translation are ridiculous but I'm still fun of  the bright colour in the game.

Let's look at this from another angel. Well, i.G.G. is a young company that has been striving to do its best in gaming industry. To error is human and  everyone  knows it  entails experience to be mature. I don't think it's fair and decent to describe such a enterprising company as  crap. Be gentle, man!

Not to be a grammar nazi...but the mistakes in your writing suggest that you are not a native English speaker, and not just a gamer making a careless mistake.  I find it suspicious you are defending this company's product as it appears you do not know how to write in English very well.

Maybe I'm just being a Negative Nancy.  If I'm wrong, feel free to ignore this.  Just a thought that crossed my mind as a possibility.

Yup totally agree, really the games not that good and the camera view was what completely killed it for me. It was top down view, so i couldn't move the camera at all. The game just didn't catch my interest. I'm not saying this because of the camera. The Camera was just the final nail in the coffin. The game play was pretty boring to, it reminded me of conquer online ( I like that game) in an anime style. Not the worst game ever, but i wouldn't put to much thought into it.

    Hi nooby husky83,

You are having full of lies within lies. Get our facts right and do research before posting.

    Thank you.

Yes, Tales of Pirate aka Pirate King Online is nothing but yet-another-cute-chibi-type-MMO with grinding and simple-tasks-made-difficult flavor added into the game. Nothing surprising. Most of the features is full of hype and turns out ugly when release.

All canceled. Waiting on Warhammer Online : Age of Reckoning.

Everyone always whines about nothing new in a game, but they never talk about what a game does well that is not new. I downloaded tha game a few days ago and my intial impressions are good.

Yes the animation style is cartoonish but that is to be expected in the current market, as older gamers can still appreciate it and younger gamers won't have thier parents taking the game away for a few drops of blood. The quest system isn't exactly new, and does field a lot of the usual Fed-Ex type quests, but at least the quests are all properly geared to your current level, unlike Maplestory which I found to give you quests about 20 levels early. So if you enjoy doing min-quests the inevitable grind to gain levels isn't so bad.

So far my only peeve abut the game is a few minor customization issues, and I don't mean the Character customization. As far as I can find so far, there is no way to move/resize certain windows, like the chat window

As for the customization of characters this is a complaint that is voiced every-single-time a MMORPG shows up. It is simply not possible to make a game with infinite variations, so quit yer whining! at least this game lets you do something with it.

btw you CAN move the camera angle, it just won't go far enough to let you get a good over the shoulder view, but you can get a very nice three-quarter view
