Marvel+Cryptic+Microsoft Vs. DC Comics+Sony+Warner Bros.

While I am not sure how it will affect City of Villain's or City of Hero's; this might mean no more lawsuits from marvel. I was wondering what people think about a  new Marvel MMO.  If it was anything like the currant Marvel games would you play that type of MMO?

I am rather dubious of how SOE will treat the DC Comics game.

They could bork it up royally like SWG then try a "do over" at some point alienating the few players that remain.

They could make it an uphill-in-the-snow grindfest like EQ1 shooing away all the casual comic fans from it.

EQ2 seems to be the only game they are making positive strides with, especially since that creative team said it will take its time on expansions to give them more polish.  It still had a rocky start, WoW contributing to that I'm sure, at least the class/subclass system is gone (nice in theory didn't work well in practice).

All i know is they (SOE) have a bad track record. I impatiently wait for more new on these games i'm very excited to see that they are working on Marvel and DC MMO's. I just cant wait.

I am looking forward to see what Marvel will bring out. I hope that they develope a game that has a rich endgame, something that CoV woefully lacks.

Why on earth did DC choose SOE as their developer! Why!

It will be very interesting theses coming years with the marvel mmo and the Dc one but of course my best bet would be on Cryptic studios and I think Soe will most likely mess it up in the future don't know maybe they wont time will tell.

But theses 2 games will get a lot of people playing who want to see superman and spider-man the x men etc etc most likely being npc's but with the experience that Cryptic has with both city of heroes and villains and the lessons they learned over the years on what works and what doesn't work will definitely be a super great benefit to them with marvel universe online.

I've lost hope that existing IPs can be licenced and made into MMOs worth the time. And you'd think at SOME point with all the bashing SOE takes from people they'd try some fancy PR move, but year after year they just sit and take it... someday SOE is gonna take a sniper rifle up the nearest bell tower and start unloading on all the folks below. And when the media interviews Blizzard that night the only comment will be "SOE was always so quiet..."

I'm actually more worried about Cryptic doing a Marvel MMO.

    Why?

Cryptic is learning from their mistakes they have made on CoH/CoV but they are still learning because they are still making mistakes. Huge glaring blunders every single update. Which is the next thing that worries me, Cryptic's track record for updating. It's absolutely terrible. Cryptic makes a lot of promises with their updates and then only delivers half of what they promised months late. I guess we don't even need to go into the massive amount of content that's been "back burner"ed so much it's been completely forgotten about, the pathetic attempt at PvP, the horrible balance between Archetypes and the non-existant end game.

SOE has these problems and even worse but what were you expecting? The makers of City of Heroes and Marvel together on a MMO? Should be the best comic book themed video game EVER right? Well, we shall see.

Xiaoki, I do agree with you in some points you made but so far I rather go with Cryptic then Sony online  and remember city of heroes was there first mmo, Sony  has had far more experience  then Cryptic ever had and they still mess things up.

all in all will have to wait and see what happens as there release dates get closer we might very well be suprized hopefully in a good way for both games.

After SOE took over Everquest from Verant, all the games they control have not been very good. Planetside could have been huge. SOE owns EQ, EQ2, Vanguard, Matrix Online, SWG, Planetside and a yet to be released game called Gods and Heroes. Not one of these games has been the huge hit they were expected to be once Verant was removed from EQ. I don't hold out much hope for any SOE based MMO. And we've seen the kind of game Cryptic can put out. I love playing my Stalker. As much as people hate MS, you have to admit they do know how to put out and market games. And quite frankly, to me, Marvel > DC Comics. I'd say the gaming talent behind the Marvel line is much better than that behind DC.

No contest here marvel and cryptic will smoke DC and SOE

SOE's track record is horrible, especially with major IPs -- Matrix Online and SWG.  CoX has its problems, but it's still by far the most fun I've had in an MMO, and it was Cryptic and Jack Emmert's first MMO.  I'm fully expecting the Marvel game to turn out much, much better than the DC game.

well soon as marvel comes out ... imho ... ( and i hate to say this i loved city of villains ) .. COH/COV will die ...

as far as DC ... bah doesnt matter .. DC movies never make money ( cept batman).. DC comics barely make money ( cept batman).. a DC mmo will barely make money .. especially since SOE is heading the project ....

marvel ftw .. and id proly play it

FYI, Sony don't own Vanguard, they published it. SoE started off pretty well, they actually cared about their customers, even listened to them, but as soon as the big green pay-checks came in they became money hungry, and tried to squeeze any money out of their customers as much as possible. If SoE aren't the retards everyone thinks they are, they'll pull this off. But i doubt they'll do it right.

Doe's sony have a developer yet.or is sony making this in house? Cryptic has a decent engine, just needs a lil refinement

Microsoft was scorned for getting into the game market until they published such classics as the close combat series. They are also far more patient with developers than sony.but u r making a pact with the devil,u will have to make an xbox version.which hopefully will run on different servers.and the graphics on x-box and pc will be off the chain.since x-box by some coincidence is the only console that can run DX10 games.

True, MS is much more patient with their devs (jesus christ look at Rare......) and they have the cash to fund it very well. The marvel game will own the DC one. What i would like to see (and this may never happen) is to see an MMO fusing the DC & Marvel world. If only.....

You mean like how DC keeps borking up and pulling a "do over" with their universe?

I have a small pile of issue #1's from DC where they restarted JLA and some of the other titles - the last reboot started with issue 0

I hope this doesn't mean I'll have to switch to being a Marvel>DC fan...  Batman was always my favorite, followed by JLA, though Spidey and the Xmen [NIghtcrawler and Gambit especially] not far behind.

Edit:  Yeah Rehmes, a CrossOver Classic ftw!

    So heres my thing.

This could be my lack of information on the Marvel MMO. But this is my theory

I’ve played all the Marvel Super Hero Board deigned games. I have a feeling that is were they are going with it. I think the marvel alliance and marvel Apocalypse were testing grounds. I personally didn’t care for those games they don’t have the MMO World feel. I feel a little claustrophobic on those maps. That’s one of the things.

Another thing would be Patent ideas. Although the City Of tittles are verry different from the marvel tittles. The comic concept and power concepts are similar. My worry is that there is going to be conflicts with both games coming out with new ideas related to the fighting systems, and power abilities.  With one game patenting there ideas before the other game can come out with them. It will limited the Devs on both sides with there creativity.

For example. I always wanted to see the Combo system implemented on COX. Were 2 or more heroes can combine there powers to create a new one. Witch the Marvel game have already implemented.  There fore I doubt if I will ever see something like that on the City Of side. I think conflicts like this will go back and forth with both games and will cause issues with the amount of creativity that comes out of both games.

    That’s my theory.

Actually, it is not as bad as people seem to think.  They have truly screwed up one game, the rest of the flack that they are getting is because of the Sony name.  It is, after all, in fashion to bash the PS3.

Marvel is just as bad as DC is when it comes to restarting their universes.  Hell, Marvel did 2 or 3 in a row in the last couple years, starting with Avengers Disassembled.  They even completely rebooted their universe just to 'fix' Tony Stark.

Don't forget the rootkit fiasco, their involvement with DRM, and widespread reports of employee abuse.  Some of us dislike Sony because they treat their employees like cattle and their customers like criminals.

I don't see how this is true. SWG had two forces on it, SOE and LA .SOE had made MMO"s before, LA never had. And it's a joke to say every game LA makes is gold. In the end of the day I say LA had more to do with the fall of SWG then SOE did.

As for MxO, they probably saved it more then anything. True they haven't released expansions, but considering what Monolith had handed over, I would say it's not doing that bad.

One thing bugs me about Cryptic doing this. And that's where does CoX fit in all of this? Lets look down the road when both games are released.  A brilliant idea comes up, does it go to marvel because they are an IP so deserve more love? Do the better devs go to the marvel game? WIll the marvel game just be a carbon copy of CoX? Basically I'd like to see a different company try it. Yes they might screw up but they also might approach it in a way cryptic never considered.  I guess the only thing we can do is wait, but by then it will be too late to determine if they were a good choice or not.

Wait a minute. Does this mean I have to choose from a pre selec of heroes, or Do I make my own?

Marvel and Microsoft are smart. If you want to make a comic book MMO who better to call? They called Cryptic solely because of CoX, Cryptic has done it and did it very well in fact. As for devs, why can people not consider they have more than one group? Cryptic has been hiring for months now, why do you think they need more people?
  • mmcguire2mmcguire2 Member Posts: 310

I remember when CoH was first announced, They had so many great ideas but ran into issues because some things looked too much like other copyrighted characters.  But everyone needs to face the fact its hard to think up a character that is 100% original.

How does a person make a scraper with a healing ability with out someone calling it a Wolverine rip off, How do you make a indestructible strong man with out thinking of Superman, how do you make a nimble wall crawler or teleporter?

It will be nice to have known characters we can model after with out worrying too my about copyright infringement.  Marvel already knows how to make good superhero games, Almost all of the Spiderman games, the Newest Hulk game.  I think having Cryptic working with the Marvel Universe fueled by Microsoft is a winning idea.

When it comes to DC there are only 2 heroes I care about, the Dark night and the Man of Steal.  I have never played a good DC based game and I could say stuff about SoE but I would get banned from the internet.

To sum it up, CoH is a game with limits and if the company that applied those limits is releasing them to make a MMO its going to be great.

Is this a Q4/2008 release time frame? It certainly seems that way.CoX is very much appearing to be in maintainance mode atm.Guess you could kinda call it a beta for thier next game.I would do the same thing if I were them.It would just be a waste of resources to get cox where it should be.By the time they would fix it there will be under 100k accts. and thier new release on the way.
