Yes it is better now. And, being able to run it on higher settings has improved the look of the game dramatically. I think it actually improves gameplay by allowing the player to not be pinged constantly by suckage graphics.
That being said, one still cannot really run it on max-qual and one still needs a fairly powerful system to run it on higher qual levels.
But, it really is better.
Note that they have also done some World optimizations (not for the better, I think) to fix performance problems. For example, the cities are now all but dead, with the NPCs bundled into clusters. Blech.
Worth the $15 to go back for a month if you had any interest in the game at all over the last couple of years. If you don't have your old CDs and Key, then the EoF expansion (retail box) is cheap enough.
I'm running it on max settings and don't have a pimped out system at all. 7900 Geforce, 2 gig RAM, 3P4.. etc.
Btw, the performance of this game vs Vanguard is night and day. Which is amazing because it looks so much better to begin with. So Vanguard has the unfortunate combination of looking worse and running worse. I am finding myself much more immersed when I play EQ2.. having a blast with it so far.
I have a 6600 GT which was a mid-range card when I bought it 2 years ago and it plays well at 1280x1024 in High Quality. Have to drop down to Balanced for raiding though. EQ2's graphics are amazing for a 2 1/2 year old game.
Extra RAM does make a huge difference though and 1.5GB or more will eliminate swapping and dramatically reduce zoning times.
With a 2GB of RAM and just about any 512 MB video card you should be able to run at extreme quality. How well it runs, comes down to how fast your processor is and if you tweak some of the more processor intensive settings like shadows.
With 256 MB of video memory you are going to have to stick to high quality or lower. With less the 2GB of RAM all bets are off and it’s a matter of tuning to get a combination of performance and appealing graphics or you could just stick to the lower default settings.

Yeah I noticed the same thing. I tried playing it on release and had a lot of issues. When I returned last month, this game runs like a dream.
Then again, I did upgrade my rig, too....
