There are a lot of games available at the moment and all are now big business. My MMORPG experience started with the ill fated Earth and Beyond. I then moved on to Anarchy Online and spent 2 years having great fun with great people. When WoW came out I went into it and spent a couple of years enjoying the game. I also tried SWG, Ryzom, FF XI and Beta LOTRO. Recently, I started to play Vanguard.
I have read quite a bit on these forums about games and assume others come here to try and get some ideas about games. Personally, I take all that I read with a pinch of salt because the only way to know if you want to play a game is to PLAY IT.
Do not listen to the flamers or supporters on any of these forums. Playing a game is the only way you will ever know if it is for you. And by 'playing' I do not mean a few hours or until you meet your first bug. I mean to try and immerse yourself.
If your hardware can't cope and this causes a lack of enjoyment then maybe return to it when, at some future time, you have upgraded. Although it does appear to me that many of the new games coming out are going to make demands of hardware so be ready to upgrade if you want to get the most from the new crop of MMORPG's.
It also helps, when deciding on a game, to know what it is you actually want from a game. I enjoyed Anarchy Online because of the community and being part of the game's evolution. The game membership I experienced were friendly and courteous, working together to have fun. Ryzom and SWG also had communities like this. When WoW came out the early days were great fun and the community great. But it was not long before the general chat language started to change and the community began to go downhill. Apart form the regular usage of foul language there was a feeling of disrespect which I can only account for by there being an income of immature players. Whatever the reason for WoW's declining community spirit, it's poor community made the game less social.
As for FF XI and LOTRO, I found both games to be unplayable because the camera movement gave me motion sickness very quickly and, search as I might, I did not find any workable solutions.
Vanguard is not everyone's game. But then no game is. I like it because there is a good community feel. The chat is mature and friendly and there are enough elements in the game to provide a challenge. I know there are software and hardware issues and I did say earlier that I think many of the new games will be hardware intensive. As for the bugs, I quite enjoy the feeling that I am part of something evolving. It's rather like being on the first floor of a new building and that is part of the adventure for me.
I am not trying to praise or denounce any game. What I have done is to quite simply say what it is that works for me: good community and adventure. I tried Vanguard and liked it.
Whatever type of game you seek, my advice is to try it for yourself - you are the best judge of what works for you not the ranters and ravers on these forums.
Have fun!

You have just listened to the commercials from an alt. And now, here is the news. Vanguard is sadly a pretty generic MMO which should have been free, at least in the first few months of its release. Even the lead developer came out recently to apologize for the games' issues from gross bugs to performance problems, from unfinished content to empty servers. That was the missing part in the commercials.
It is true that Vanguard has a great potential which may be realized in the future. Be forewarned that the game is still going through its fundementals being fixed and tweaked. It should have been free and in beta testing currently. Do not pay for the game as of yet. Either ask for a buddy key or wait for the trial. There are nice people in the forums here who would have an extra key and might give it to you.
CONTRIBUTE INTO THE GAMING INDUSTRY! STOP PAYING FOR BORING COPYCATS, UNFINISHED BUGFESTS AND CRANKY JUNKWARE. BE A RESPONSIBLE GAMER!
Very well said. Enjoy Vanguard my friend.
Thank you Joejcva for replying. I intend to enjoy myself and I hope others do too in whatever game they are playing. When the enjoyment stops the playing stops.
Name one MMORPG that was finished and completely polished at release. Please make your answer genuine. Having said that, if a game held off from releasing due to bugs needing fixing, game being completely polished and tweaked, and to attuned to everyone's dream MMO to the point of where everyone absolutely loves it...then games would NEVER get released and remain in beta.
Atleast Brad came forth and admitted there were many issues, but the game is far from a generic MMO.
Ya know I read these forums alot, and it amazes me that those folks who bash Vanguard, whine and bitch about it being unpolished, attack the people who enjoy the game......are still browsing these Vanguard forums and making posts. LOL. I can't stand SWG anymore, I thought WoW was a bore but you don't see me going to their forums and making ignorant posts there.
Frankly, I think you're an idiot. But thats just me.
I don't deny that it is still unfinished. Yes it has performance issues, bugs needing fix, pvp imbalance, etc. That doesn't exclude the fact that alot are enjoying the game including myself. I could be playing WoW, but no thanks. I could be playing LOTRO, but that game was a bore. AoC and Warhammer? Sure, but they aren't slated for release until the end of this year so I'll play VG until then.
And I didn't flame him for stating facts, I flamed him because of the manner of his post not to mention the fact that he bashed a player for enjoying the game. The fact that people who bash others for enjoying the game are still making these posts completely blows my mind. If you like Vanguard, that's fine...if you don't...that's fine too but why not move on somewhere?
In FFXI you can actually turn the camera locking off. It's in the config menu under gameplay. It makes the game a lot better. I'm still trying it out. The community is great but the game itself not noob friendly at all.
I did not want this post to become a flamefest but more an opportunity for members to comment on how they decided to play the game. When I first came to these forums I was dismayed by the numbers of flames and the vitriol which people used against games, companies and forum members. I did read one early post which denounced Vanguard and then a few weeks later the same author was praising the game having just "started to play it". So on what basis was his/her first post based? (no need for reply). It just strengthens my case for ignoring these authors and making your own mind up by playing.
Enjoy and thanks to all replies.
If you would have known that they released it to early because they run out of money then you wouldn't be saying it should have been free, would you?
I really wonder if you've played the game since last patch and can say that it's still unplayable and ppl shouldn't buy it, I havent played it since february so please do tell.
Your post looks as much as an attempt by another company to troll the game as that guy is really from sigil or SOE, trying to promote the game.
