I think we're going to see some changes in the future with regards to how MMO's are charged anyways, industry wide. With so many titles coming out soon and on the not too distant horizon, the market is going to be re-adjusting.
I would like to see more of an SOE station pass model where for a little higher monthly fee you can have access to a range of titles. I think over the next couple of years it's going to be hard for publishers to pull off a $15.00/month subscription fee off of any title. Or maybe just the very cream of the crop MMO's will be able to do this. There are just so many options that are going to be available for players in the next couple of years that one of the enticements is going to be lower fees (my opinion).
For example, take Auto Assault. This is a fantastic game (imo) and really provides excellent game play. I don't know what the actual subscription numbers are, but I know the numbers are nowhere near what the other mainstream MMO's are. They charge $15.00/month and continue along these lines. I picked up two copies at the local computer store for $10.00 and am currently paying for two accounts. What would happen, for example, if they changed to a $2.99 monthly fee and sold in-game advertising - essentially changing their business model. I'll bet you the subscription numbers would shoot through the roof. Why? The game is excellent and the price is right.
Another example is a game like Dungeon Runners, and other games like this. Not exactly an MMO mind you, but I will use it as an example anyway. The game is free to play until a certain level and then you have the option to pay. Also the initial code is free to download.
The 'Guild Wars Model' again - different and successful. Free to play on-line with expansions driving the repeat revenue. Highly successful and I'll bet we will see more of this in the future. Also, the LOTR life-time charge is another great example.
Overall I think as a consumer, we win. More competition will most likely mean more games for less money as competition vie's for our monthly fees.
Right now I pay for 3, $15.00/mo accounts for a total of $45.00/mo. That's my personal limit. For $45.00/mo I get more entertainment out of these titles than I do from cable tv, movies etc. But $45.00/mo is a stretch for a lot of people, especially when it comes to gaming. As more titles get released and the publishers no longer hit the revenue numbers they are shooting for with a $15.00/mo fee, there's bound to be changes coming to this way of charging for MMO's...
Newegg.com dropped the price to 39.99 about 2 weeks ago a few days later Amazon dropped theirs to 44.99, now it seems everyone has dropped it to 39.99.

Most games do not lower to 39.99 within 2 months. It usually takes the better part of a year to drop. Games that are great stay 49.95 for almost 1.5 years+ Look at God of War and Halo1/2...couldn't find them new for under that for a while. World of Warcraft and Everquest 2 stayed 49.95 for at least 6 months. Companies like New Egg always have their stuff at a discount, shipping usually outweighs that though.
I think this is the acknowledgement by Sigil that their game is not grade A. Most people could deduce that for themselves though.
Nice, gets done with most games after 2 months of release. Might make a difference for some people to spend 39,95 instead of 49,95.
No they do not. Most games do not go to the bargain bin this early. Next it will be in that basket with cassette tapes at the end of the register.
I can not even imagine anyone buying this game at this point.
39,95 bargain bin? basket with cassette tapes, they still sell them? Anyway keep believing what you feel best, maybe one day you even start to believe yourself.
ps might you worry bout me DON'T and if you don't care no problem with it either.
Maybe it's just me but if I were a consumer looking to invest in an MMORPG, I would be discouraged to buy a game that hasn't been out for even 3 months before seeing a price-drop. That sends up a signal that I should stay away because they are trying to salvage it. And this reigns true for most new game purchases, if I don't see a 50$ then it must not be worth my time (except if I know it's a classic) and this is especially true for newish MMOs.

Spoken like a true poor consumer. That kind of attitude is what they pre upon.

I tried to buy it via digital download earlier, linked from the Vanguard website.
It was shown as $39.99 on the website, when i got to the part where you fill in your credit-card details it showed me a price in UK pounds of £249.90 . Obviously an error, but i wasn't going to risk it.
People who bought the game for the original price should get a free month of play.
BRILLIANT.
After a few months when (if) the game is fixed, improved and enhanced, SIGIL and SOE should send an email with a free month of gameplay. An apology for early (incomplete) release, and a picture of Brad with his head between his legs and kissing his own ass for the victims of censorship.

Yes it is odd that if you really was wanting to buy the game why are you posting here about that error. Should you not start over the purschase or something if you thougth the first time was an error?

I just thought it was amusing.
I did try it again, i even reported said error. I just wasn't prepared to test whether it actually would bill me that amount. I also tried Direct2Drive but that was USA, Canada only.
I have every intention of trying it again later, if that fails i'll just have to buy it the old fashioned way.

This is definately not true of the UK market where games decrease in price very rapidly and can vary widely at launch (eg you could save the equvalent of $26 on the VG CE edition pre-launch if you shopped around). Also shipping is free to anywhere within the UK; I have never paid shipping or P & P on any of my SW purchases.
Just check out the variance of prices for the WoW expansion -
Play.com (a store I use regularly) is selling it at the rough equivalent of $20 with shipping free. Wasnt it $40 when it came out just over 2 months ago?

LOL. Guess it is really expensive to ship things over the internet to England.
Uhm, here's my view on the 39.99 $ sale price. I still think that is 39.99$ too much for a beta ...
Yeh we know you didnt enjoy your 8 days in the actual beta, you told us that a few weeks before launch....now dont tell me you still actually went out and bought the game after not liking it??

Played with buddy key recently to check out the progress. And there was progress, but just not enough.

Should have been $39.99 to start with if not lower.
