Why do people downrate games, even if they don't know anything about it?

Hello !

I guess I am surely not the first one who rants about that ! But anyway... I just found out that always if the not yet known game Perfect World reaches the TOP 5 Hyped game list on the main mmorpg.com site someone rates it down again. I mean its obvious that they just do it because their baby got out of the top 5 but really... is this the sense of this system?

You may ask why this is so important for me... well its easy... I know that sooner or later Perfect World, the "chinese WoW" with more than 30 million registerd users reaches the western market and we will see the first MMORPG after a long time which favors an enhanced WoW style gameplay within the chinese Mythos called "Pangu". Please don't just downrate this game because you say: "Oh no its an eastern game, this is surely some grinding game from Korea or Japan like L2, RFOnline, etc. etc.... Please take the time first and discover some infos about this game yourselve before you rate it down. Everyone I know of, who has tried this game out (the chinese version), was amazed... so believe me one thing it will be a great game, if they just get the translation and distribution right... ! Give it a chance ... there is a reason WHY this game always hits the TOP 5 hyped games again and again...

let me put it this way. are a fan of metallica? well anyway lets just say that all the western games are all their albums pre black album. and all of the albums post black album are the eastern games. now we all know ( or at least should

) that metallica is coming out with a new album soon. we all want it to be good, we keep hearing great things about it, that they have changed and gone back to their roots, but theirs just that instinct in the back of your mind that says don't get your hopes up... you have been let down before.

Well I understand your logic... but there is just one minor mistake in it... if we would say PW comes from Japanese or Korean... then people would be biased sure. But now comes something completly new... not Metallica like in your example Just on the first sight it looks like another Metallica... even if its from a completly different brand (or to stay mmorpg related... from a completly different culture), thus not "Metallica" anymore... and exactly thats the case here!

There was never a very successful game made by chinese... ! All came from japanese as well as Korea... but PW is the FIRST chinese game which is at the moment one of the most successful mmorpg on their market right now, even more popular than their chinese version of WoW. In this case being biased is a bad thing because people think of it that it may just be an "eastern" game... however its chinese (sure its easter but we don't have any comparable games to chinese market)... and so we dont have ANY knowledge about it... ! And as I saw this game myselve I know that "eastern" and chinese seems to be VERY different... hope you got my point...

So I think being biased is one thing... but I say that people generally should judge more by themselves and not just throw everything into the same basket...

Pangu sucks. It smells like old baloney left in the sun to fester, and tastes like a canker sore. It's a grind from hell. You have to kill 8 billion rats just to make it to 2nd level, and that's when PvP starts. If you get killed one time, you lose all your items and XP, and have to kill 8 billion rats again. Man I hate those Eastern grind fest mmo's like Pangu.

This is nothing but a RFO clone, and playing RFO was like getting kicked in the gonads by your grandmother. I'd rather be tied to a chair, and my eyelids clamped open and forced to watch Brokeback Mountain than play Pangu.

Not only that, but it has that crappy anime art, where everyone has eyes as big as dinner plates, waists as big as a pencil, and spikey hair. God I hate Sailor Moon.

Why would anyone pimp this turd?

Maybe they are playing the Chinese version too, and basing their ratings downgrades on that?

I never rate games that I haven't played... but since these ratings can (and do) get skewed by anyone willing to create multiple accounts I wouldn't put a lot of stock in them.

I don't believe any game will succeed or fail based on their hype rating in MMORPG.com

As you mentioned... it would be the first major "Chinese" game to be released in the Western World... but I'm afraid we tend to group all games from east asia in the same category....

Maybe Perfect World will be the first.... we'll have to wait and see....

... and thats exactly what I mean ... how can you tell me that this is a grind game if you DONT know it? You just disqualified your argument... because badly PW is absolutely no grind fest ! You just throw a game you know nothing about into the same pot ...

BTW this game has nothing to do with any eastern grind fest! Because the game mechanics of PW are the one of WoW! You only level up with quests (you can also do some instances etc. with your friends) ! You get your equipment mostly from drops or quests... how can you tell this is some l2 grind fest maybe RFO or whatever? Where do you get this statement if I can ASSURE you its not true... as I have played it already...

The only thing you can really compare this game is to WoW... -> it also stays absolute true to the "pangu" mythos, which is a large legend... All quests are around this... there are so many different types of quest too. Oh and btw you dont drop every item... maybe we both talk about different games !?

But yeah at least now I know now why people rate games down even if they don't know nothing about it... sad but true

P.S. Believe me one thing... as soon as this game hits the western market and you finally have the chance to play it... I wonder what you will tell me then... I suspect this game to be a big success, just because its the first time a game comes with WoW like gameplay (from the love to the detail, as well as how polished it is) but takes it even a bit further...

I can assure you they havent played it! The problem is that the game itselve is not yet known... but everyone I know of who played it was absolutely amazed... and I am also very sure it will be a big success... its just so terrible sad if people like the poster above come in, tell something as they would know something about it and didnt even read one bit of the game! At least I have the proof now... because everything he said is not true with PW... ! I am also VERY sceptical on new games... thats also why I tried it myselve... but I would never comment like he on a game I absolutely don't know...

but by saying 30million chinese people playing it is amazing it really isnt that big because lets face it a large amount of the worlds population is chinese or some other kind of asian so certian games will be popular in the east that the west will never like because diffrent cultures diffrent tastes

Because the knowledge of asian MMORPG's in general on this forum is piss poor. many people think, oh, its asian, it must be a Lineage 2 clone!, because its completely fair to judge over 200 mmorpg's based on the few korean mmorpg's that came to the west [/sarcasm]. I say Korean, because we rarely receive Chinese mmorpg's, but that doesn't stop people from stereotyping.

But anyway, I don't take the hype and ratings on this site serious anyway. I mean, look at number 7. Stargate worlds. There is very little known about this game, but people hype it just because it carries the name "Stargate".

Indeed. Asian grindfest is a common term used to describe many games. Some of the games are probably very fun, but we don't give them a chance.

Yes sadly it seems so.. even there is absolute no reason to it. Also aren't the asian games usually the ones with least customisation? However PW uses one of the most complex character creation system I have seen to date. You can even import your own fotos to model them with this tool. Also there is some kind of social clothing, like Vanguard has where you can create craft your own custom clothing, besides the armor you wear. Isn't that also something absolute not common in eastern game...

I am really curious how this evolves and I am sure as soon as it reaches the western market it may change some opinions about the easter games. The chinese team really made something very unique. I love the WoW style gameplay and easy interface... it also has the addicton doing quests, getting nice armors and weapons from it etc. ! I just wish people would be a bit more open minded about it...

But I really know why this game always moves up to the top 5 hyped games (because of the few people who tried it)... but then yes... some biased people fastly rate it down again ...
