I think women tend to prefer the more casual games, such as card games and web-based games. There are 4 women on my guild's Ventrillo channel in WoW though, but they are all married

The rest of the female toons have either male voices or don't use a microphone.. That's nowhere near 54% though of course.

Speaking as a female gamer, sadly I think you're right.

Once upon a time I played DAoC and was one of 3 women I encountered on our server. The ratio was slightly better on CoH/CoV... there were 7 women in our SG.

Thankfully on WoW, our guild is more evenly balanced. Roughly 1 woman to every 3 guys in a guild of 250+.

I've encountered a handful of female console gamers and/or stand-alone PC gamers but alas the world of gaming is primarily male-dominated.

I work as a supervisor of a large nationwide call center so I encounter people from all walks of life and station. I'm regularly fielding questions from other women, "How can you play those games?" and "I just don't see the interest." and (my favorite) "It's just so violent."

Personally, I think gaming is a fantastic diversion. Particularly MMOs. One gets to emerge themselves in another world, explore the story-lines, build a toon, and stomp the crap out of anything that gets in the way all while remaining in contact with other like-minded individuals from all over the world. What's not to like?

From my experience, fellow female gamers generally are more technologically orientated people. Perhaps it is just the mind-set?

The standard female is not interested in competition and show-off... Thats all you need to know for MMORPG population. MMORPGs are all about "Uhaha, go hunt [epic item]... Look, UHA -HA, alpha male, Epic... GRRR"...

Thats it, you cannot deny this, if its football or sports cars, management or war... Men cannot free themselves of "whos the strongest bull",

Funny sidenote there: this will eventually be the end of our whole race ^^

That is very true on all accounts. There is definately a note of 'who's got the bigger gonads' in gaming in general and most (if not all) industry of any kind. lol

Most women I know could not imagine starting a conversation with "I will bitch-slap this mother all up and down this dungeon! Bring it!"

For WoW, I'd say there is easily far more males than females.

Personally I prefer tanking and healing in most MMO's, but not really that interested in getting ahold of the hardcore items etc... But from my experience in games I'd say 70% male 30% female.

There is an old saying from my Diablo (That's Diablo 1) days on Bnet that I think can be modified. It goes a little something like this: "Welcome to the World of Warcraft! Where the men are men and most of the women are men too!"

Yeah, I would have to agree that the their numbers are way off. I think they are counting way to many shims.. Though it does seem to be getting better.. When I played EQ oh so many years ago I knew a small handful of women that played.. The other were shims looking for hand outs by making the men think they were female. ( Yes they got them, pissed me off) When I played SWG again a very small handful of female players.. But here on WoW the female population has exploded IMO. Again no where the stated numbers but compared to the other games I have played? It is awsome .. I no longer have to hide what I am .. I can openly say * Yes I really am a female* When I started way back in wow there were so few that when it was found you were female you were harrassed, you were stalked .. Wether the guys wanted us off their games or they were just lonely horney nerds in their mothers basement I dont know..

I Have had to ask men why they play female chars.. I mean one woudl think it would be a blow to their ego.. they wont wear pink but they will roll a female toon? In EQ it was * I get free stuff* SWG it started to change a bit to I dont like male dancers, dancers should be female.. then to ( what my ex husband also says and now is the most common answer) I dont want to stare at a guys butt when I am running aroudn questing and killing!

Men, you want your GF/Wife to stop nagging about you being on the game all the time? Do what my boyfriend did. *Just try it if you do not like it you do not have to play.. but Hunny it would be a great way for us to spend time together.* Then show her the creation screen and how we can make a character really our own! ( yes it actually worked with me)

FYI: How to tell a real female from a Shim .. A real woman will not ask for hand outs, a real woman wil not ask you to run this or that for her.. A real woman has something to prove in this mans world.. That we can hold our own and in fact whoop your sorry butts. You find that female that refuses to get on vent and is always asking for gold, or this item or that .. run me here run me there .. there is not a real woman sitting behind that screen 100% guarenteed..
