No, after seeing all the flak people gave Sigil for that monster download they used in open and in order to make this a free download not something where you would have to subscribe to Fileplanet they decided to not include the high res textures.

Not to worry though because the only place you can really see much of a difference is in the armor in my opinion. Most of the beta I played low res and think the game still looks and performs better than any other game out there including Vanguard. If you really cannot live without high res find a preorder box at a retailer for 5 to 10 dollars. That has the high res textures.

Where did you get that information?  I don't see it anywhere on the "World Tour" page, and no mention of it in the beta forums.  The only restriction given is the level 15 cap.  I believe there was a dev post that stated the current closed beta client would patch up to the open beta client, so I seriously doubt any "high res texture limitation" is going to be present.  The World Tour open beta client is a 3.9GB download, which is almost exactly the same size of the closed beta client.  So again, I seriously doubt any such restriction will exist.  Turbine wouldn't make the mistake of hiding LotRO's gorgeous graphics to over a million potential customers.  And not to start a flame war, but copying any of Sigil's actions is probably not a good idea.

BTW, Vanguard's client was absurdly large, over five times the size of the LotRO client, so whatever size restrictions they may have had may have been warranted.

You have to buy the DvD version for DDO to get the highest graphics. dont know if they are gonna do the same with lotro, but i wouldnt be shocked.

It was on the beta forums. There was at least one thread and maybe more on the high res client during the last couple of weeks where this was addressed. basically they want to keep the DL as streamlined as possible.

My data may be out dated though. The last post I can find is by Patience dated 13 March, do a search on high res

Well, that may be true for the boxed retail version of DDO, but it has nothing to do with the LotRO beta.  Turbine seems to be setting the stakes higher with LotRO than with DDO with their announcement of one million open beta invites, so other than a level cap, I doubt they would cripple the game any more than that.

There you go if the difference is all that important to ypou then go out and drop 5 bucks on the pre order disk at EB Games

I'ts not a cripple to anything or anyone. If ANYTHING it helps and is a benefit. This will allow those open beta without preorder to get the client and not wait 48 hours for it to download. You try downloading a 10+gig file on bit torrent with 10000000 leechers (no thanx). It doesn't effect the game one bit everyone who was in CB loved the game just fine without the VERY HIGH and ULTRA HIGH graphics settings. Thats all it adds 2 high end graphics settings for the release client and the preorder package. It would just be horrible buissness sense to try and make people download a file that size.

The difference on chain armor and heavy armor is much different than leather or light.  I've also noticed that the mobs look even better in HiRes, along with the terrain.  The whole environment looks fantastic without the HiRes client, but looks AWESOME with HiRes. :)

I'll do some side by side pics over the weekend.. once OB starts.

That is true JonMichael but the difference is not worth the extra time needed for downloading, even at low res it is easily the best looking game on the market. I played most of beta in low res and still ooohed and ahhhed at every turn. High res is just icing on a already delicious cake,  just my opinion of course.

    Totally true, Jack!

I played most of beta with the lowres client too.  I was just AMAZED when I loaded the HiRes client!

Just when I thought the game could not look any more detailed or beautiful than it was...

When I played beta with the Low-Res client, the game looked like garbage to me (have screenshots to prove it).

I really am hoping that the high-res client is a huge improvement. I'd like to believe that the high-res client makes the difference to make the game as beautiful and stunning as people keep saying it is. As opposed to the garbage I saw when I played before.

Unfortunately, as I'm unwilling to drop the cash to find out, I guess I'll never know.

Has anyone heard of an actual trial of the game? Or any way one can try the game with the high-res client before making the decision to spend money on it?

Take a look at this post: http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/119048/page/1

There's some screenshots I took in game with the HiRes client.  That's far from garbage :)

No, there is none. You can pay $5 for a pre-order at Gamestop and see, and then switch that $5 to some other game you want if not happy. You can go over to a friend's place that has pre-ordered, which doesn't really matter unless they have the exact same setup (vid card, drivers, monitor as you do. Aside from that pre-order DvD, as has been stated many times to your question, there is no current way to get the hi-res textures.

Personally, I don't see an issue with dropping a whole whopping $5 to get what you want, especially when if you don't like it, you've lost nothing. That $5 can be moved to another game or kept as store credit for when you purchase your next game. Just bring the pre-order DVD and the pamphlet inside it back. I mean, if you're indulging in the luxury that is video gaming, then financially $5 shouldn't hurt you, especially when you have all the aforementioned options.

As I've said before Khalathwyr, we don't have gamestop up here. Additionally, none of my friends are even remotely interested in LOTRO. I've simply been playing MMOs long enough to want to give it a chance. I believe in being fair when judging an MMO, so i try to judge it on all the available sources. I also prefer to rely on personal experience rather than what a reviewer is telling me.

That being said, when I tried the game it looked and felt like absolute garbage. When i mention this, people say "Oh, well you need to play with the high-res client to see how truely beautiful it is". However, seeing as there's no real way to play the high-res client without handing over some money, I am forced to judge the game on what I played before, which was garbage.

I refuse to pay for the high res client for a number of reasons. Simply that a) Turbine has been producing crap lately, b) I shouldn't have to pay to be enticed into the game, and c) the garbage client I played before has made me wary of spending any money on the game before I see it plays better.

What kind of setup are you using?  This is a link to the low-res client with screenshots I took before I installed HiRes.  It still looks fantastic.

These pics were on the High setting: http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/118205

Still doesn't look like garbage. :)

For the record I was playing with all settings maxed out. This is what I saw when I logged in:

    http://img165.imageshack.us/img165/6466/screenshot00010qw0.jpg

I was so shocked and disappointed. I thought they can't possibly release a game that looks so crappy. Thus I'm trying to find a way to play it on the high res client. Otherwise that's all I really have to go on.

Ack!. Sorry Blurr I guess I missed it where you said you didn't have a Gamestop nearby. That is a bummer. Oh, and I can see what you mean by those screenshots. I have a Geforce 7950 GT KO 512mb and 2 GB of DDR2 RAM and my low res game looked better than those screenshots, defintly. When I upgraded to Hi-res it brought out even more detail, like the screenshots Jack posted in another thread. Of course, in motion it looks tons better. I genuinely wish you had a chance to see it on my machine.

If I recall correctly, PC Gamer May issue has an open beta code and disc that is the same disc found in the pre-order boxes...

Wow.. those are with all of your settings maxed?

Something is certainly missing there.  Before you bother locating the HiRes textures, I would check my video card and try reinstalling the game.

Even on the lowest setting, the game never lacked that much detail to me.

wow you really need to double check your settings Blurr, here is one I took with the low res settings to show a friend who has an older machine with a NVdiia 5900 what the game would look like on his box

Hi, I had purchased the PcGamer issue with the open beta cd, and from the screen shots posted on these forums; I think the Cd uses the low res client.  My  graphics from the game did'nt seem very inspiring to say the least.  I'll have to look into the high res version, maybe it will change my current opinion of the game.
