Can anyone reccomend me an MMORPG?

I dont really no anything about MMORPGS, the only thing close to an MMOrpg ive played is guild wars, which i enjoyed and it kept me playing for about 70 hours. But since im so bored with general PC gaming im looking for a MMORPG to keep me playing for a while.

THe games im considering are:

EQ2 (got the trial, its just updating now, but its gonna take 3 hours :P)

World of Warcraft

City of Heroes

Vanguard

LOTR: Online (when it comes out)

So can anyone give me the good and bad points of the games ive just listed, and perhaps reccomend some different ones?

THanks

Tom.

edit: Would prefer something with still plenty of people playing.

if your more or less new to MMOs you will probably love WoW. beyond that I would do what most of the MMO vets are doing and waiting on the next wave AoC, WAR etc.

Personally, I *highly* recomend City of Heroes/Villains. If you'd like, they just started a referral system, so I can get you a 10 day trial if you'd like to try it.

Depends what kind of games you like.

If you are into endless raiding go with WoW.

If you love casual play and lots of quests go with LOTRO.

If you're in between maybe try EQ II.

All 3 games are good in their own way.

My opinion of the games you listed are as follows:

EQ2- Haven't played it, but heard it's a solid game.

WoW- Perfect for a new and/or causal MMO gamer.  It's a good place to start.

City of Heroes- Haven't played this one in a while, but the gameplay is nice and fun to play.  Like WoW, it's fairly easy to just pick up and play.  The best part of this game though is creating characters, it's very extensive.  The missions got a bit boring after a while but I guess the PvP is better not with CoV and all.

Vanguard- Haven't played it but I hear it's buggy and aimed at a more hardcore/MMO kind of crowd.  Not the bet place to start, at least not without playing a trial, which has yet to come out yet.

LOTR:Online- Played the Beta, wasn't impressed.  Not a "bad" game per se just felt way too much like a slower paced less fun version of WoW with no real PvP.  Unless you're a huge LOTR fan, you're better off with EQ2, WoW, or CoH/V.   But there's plenty open beta keys floating around, like in the current PC gamer, so you could check it out that way.

As for up coming MMOs you might want to check out Age of Conan, Warhammer, Chronicles of Spellborn, Aion, and Tabula Rasa.  Those are more or less the ones I have my eye on and they should be coming out later this year or early next year.

    Edited for grammar.

Well, i can give you some pointers.

CoV/CoH: A very intresting game, not in the bad sense. Every server has a good community, Coh/Cov has one of the best communites of all time in a MMORPG. E.x I needed some help, and i went on the forums, it was like 40 seconds later, i got all the help i needed. Most servers do CC's, which are Costume Contest, extremely fun to do, you can win prize money, or just meet some friends, i've won over 2million infamy just by doing that, and hell yah thats good for a level 5. The game has some awesome new systems, enchancement system. Oh and don't forget THE best character creation system in the world.

World Of Warcraft: I'm currently playing it, i tried it again a few weeks after BC was released, and i am very impressed, you ever you play WoW or the WoW Trial, play the burning blade server, and me and my guild will hook yah up with some stuff and give you some pointers!

Very good game indeed, i really don't find it much of a grind since there are tons of quests to do, tons of people to help you, and of course, very good instances for lvling!

Hi all. Cane someone please suggest me a game too?

I'm a very big fan of the Lineage. Played WoW, Eve, EQ2, GW. Some ideas to hlp you.

    1. WoW. easy game, and boring. no real threat in game. no needs. just lvl mobs and thats all. good craft thought. No buffers/healers needed. not very nice guild system. no hlp needed in game at all. Tons of servers which is bad.

    2. EQ2 pretty same as WoW. but it even more boring, more slowly, less crouded.

    3. Eve. while nicely overall, but also very boring sometimes, and all you do is just kill pirates, make money and learn skills. And sudded topic in russian forums (that GM's aid opposing alliance. And they really don't lie) don't make this game very fair.

    4. GW. This game owns. but. lvl 20 and 2kk exp and you hate it because nothing else to do after you amasses plat and have all greens. But some good sides: good classes. very active gameplay. healers/buffers available.

What I like in L2, is that it has probably perfect craft system (bad that only dwarfs can craft). Very fast and active PvP system. Hard to play (thats when you get 76 at L2 you really acheive something, not like WoW). Lots of interesting places. Many groups. Different classes including support and healers and various others. Very good guilding system, and help from guilds. Bad things that atm it's very botted and most server population are big and old ppl with very high lvl. or botters. I was originately on Teon, and tried to move to other server, but still it's not good.

So if you guys can suggest it would be very appreciated. Because I have the big feeling that there is no interesting games out there which has hardcore PvP (not Wow, and not Eve), good craft, hardcore lvling, good community and cool guild organization.

    Thnx all.

World of Warcraft, trust me, even if you don't know me. As a newbie to the genre you WANNA go warcraft. It's wonderful fun and a lot to do for someone whos not "in business" since the "80386 Multi User Dungeon"-Ages ;)

Again, go for World of Warcraft, best choice!

I don't think WoW would be a good starter game.

even if he started on a totally brand new server it would be overrun by oldtime hardcore players and he would be left out in the cold unless he allready have a good guild.

WoW is so extremely raidfocused that it's nuts.

it's more of a work than it's a game you play for fun.

It might be an easy game but i wouldn't recommend it for a newbie.

It's fun while you level up and that's it.

    Then the endless raiding begins.

I’d suggest either CoH or EQ2. WoW is an interesting option for a first time gamer, but EQ2 has a similar fantasy setting and more meat to it. (WoW borrows heavily from EQ1) EQ2 is a very well balanced game with something to offer almost everyone, and probably the best PvE game out there today.

CoH has even less depth then WoW if that’s possible but it’s extremely approachable, easy to find groups for new players and has a high initial fun factor.

i've just recently started to play the game rappelz, and so far i think that it's really great.

good points: it's free, doesn't  lag much...much at all, good graphics and themes, u can have up to about 5 or 6 characters on one username, no hackers or cheats so it's fair all around

bad points: not much character individuality choice, um.............and it takes long to download and instal the client

Id have to agree with Virtuella, the old school WoW players wouldnt give a newb the time of day. Best case, get on the most recent server and luck into a decent guild then start guild hoping to the top.

Now is the best time to actually start WoW, there are plenty of new servers going online and plenty of new players joining the game with TBC.

And you'll have a great time leveling up your toon which takes about 3 months...

For a new gamer WoW is a great choice, BUT it will ruin you for other MMOs where grouping is a MUST to do anything. and yes i know the whole point of MMOs is to group but when you can't do ANYTHING with out one it really sucks.

and no clue where that other guy is getting WoW is endless raiding, i never raid and i have fun playing and with the new expansion the difference between the raid gear and non-raid isn't that much.i tried raiding its just not for me its boring,i have friends that raid and ended up replacing their tier 1 and 2 armor for quest rewards.

another thing i mean by "ruin you for other MMOs" is because most other games lvling is like a second job and takes forever to cap. WoW can be done at your own pace and still see results every night, on average takes a couple months. and most games limit how many characters you can make to just a handful (around 4 or so) you can have around 30 alts or something like that on WoW 9 characters per server wich works with 9 different classes.

and getting started DO NOT roll a pvp server, i will admit this pvp servers attract the worst people. over all PVE people are helpful and you don't have to worry about getting ganked while you're still trying to learn the controls

if he does roll a new server its locked no transfers to it for 6 months wich is more than enough time to lvl cap. and no one forces you to raid i have been playing since Dec 04 tried raiding a couple times , not for me.

Okay, there is 3.. If your one of those gamers that likes Sci-Fi games then play Anarchy Online..

If your wanting a medieval game, then you could either play World of WarCraft, or Lord of the Rings Online.

LOTRO and WoW are monthly fee'd but Anarchy has a free version. But LOTRO and WoW both have free trials.. well.. WoW does.. LOTRO is in Open Beta At the moment.

EQ2 is a nice little game, but never would I recommend it for new players. Its too far away form a normal solo game. Its not polished enough and far from nice and shiny.

EQ2 and WoW are a darn lot alike, with WoW being th ebetter choice if you really start your MMO journey...

eve is the best sci-fi out atm, but tabula rasa should be coming SOON(tm)...lol. if you are more fantasy EQ2 is a good choice, both games do have a free trial.

Jesus Christ, you don't want to recommend EvE-Online to a newbie to the genre? Its a spread sheet game with pictures, a darn good spread sheet game but for someone who just started? You can't be serious...

What Meridion said. EVE online is a great game. But it is *NOT* a game you want to try if your new to the MMO genre, and gaming in general.

But seriously, go for City of Heroes/Villains. It's Solo *AND* group friendly, is great for casual players (You can play for half an hour to an hour and still feel like you've accomplished something), has a fun battle system that keeps you involved instead of the usual "Hit auto attack, use the occasional special attack, go read a book" syndrome that plagues some MMO's today, lets you get the ability to fly, superjump, run at superspeed, or teleport at level 14, and has some great writing.

Which isn't to say that WoW is bad, mind you... But it puts *way* to much emphesis on the "end game" and Raids.

    ((EDIT))

Also, I should point out that with the villain side (City of Villains) the Mastermind has the ability to lead a small army of Henchman. (The Mastermind can eventually have six Henchman out at once when they get to the higher levels). The Mastermind can choose as their Primary Power Set (Which is what dictates what Henchman the Mastermind can summon) Robots, Undead, Mercenaries, Ninjas, and Thugs.

So, you can controll your own army of *NINJAS*. Let's see WoW do THAT!
