But everything you have a problem with in WoW sounds like the community and not the game mechanics itself. How can Blizzard be blamed for that? They have a EULA, and every EULA (End User license agreement, for those who don't know) is VERY hard to police, especially the age, if the parents are buying their kids the game. I agree there are a lot of kiddies in WoW, but can you blame the game of WoW for that?
Ultimately it's a business of making money, and you will notice trends in these online money making games to anything commercial, it's just a fact.
I'm not trying to insult you, you are exposing yourself with some of your comments, and I'm just pointing it out.
You don't like it, don't play it. If you went though WoW and learned the lore and actually read the quests instead of power-levelling to 70, you may have enjoyed it along the way.
You said you played EQ1 also, did you REALLY enjoy it taking months to get to level 65 (when 65 was the cap)? Quest XP was almost non-existent (no one really bothered with anything other than the Epic weapon quests, pre-level 70/75 cap anyway) It was just a constant mob killing grind... farming items... 8 hour raids... Waiting hours on end in front of your PC for a particular mob to spawn? No, this was refined in next generation MMOs.
WoW is in no way a cheap copy of EQ1 my friend. You can call WoW a VERY VERY refined version if that floats your boat. Other than that, not much similarities to EQ1, other than it's an MMO. Pre-WoW release anyway, I am not sure how the current EQ1 plays anymore, since I quit that when WoW came out.

I said WoW simplified the whole genre. If you know how to play and you have a few friends with you, there is absolutely no challenge in game. Thats why I said there are only a few guilds on every server capable of doing end-game (naxx before), and only those minority of wow community are people that played some other MMO before, and know their class and know how to prepare. There is no challenge for that kind of people, there is only challenge for btnet kids that is unfortunately majority of the population.
I am blaming WoW as a whole, that is overpopulated by the worst community possible, because the system is made that way. It's a simplified version of everything it tries to copy (and yeh in that simplicity WoW was unique). Before the people that played MMOs were mostly mature and reasonable people, it was a minority, .. now WoW brought all those BTnet kids and diablo players into mmo genre making it as mainstream as it can be. I am not blaming WoW managers, and I'm not blaming people, cause I realize how poor critical thinking of average person is... and so .. ... this leads to ...what I tried to say at the beginning, that Lotro is not a copy of WoW, but instead Lotro is a clone of Eq1 Ac2, because those were the two games that brought some originaly into MMORPG, and those inspired majority of the games made after including WoW.
You know what? I'm sick of people going on about WoW, I'm not 'jealous' of it's success, that was Sony Online Entertainment when they decided to bring that retard of an update called the NGE, I'm actually happy that MMORPG's are doing so well in the market these days, it means that there will be more jobs, more money and most importantly that economy is on the rise so that means anyone who wants to work in the games industry will get paid well and that means folks who just simply couldn't cut it in their exams will still have a chance even after they leave.
But, to go to such lengths just to keep a games' reputation intact is pathetic, why don't you try and convince us to come back instead of flaming us? Give me some proper reasons that will make me want to come back to that static and uninspired game, If you can convince me, then I might actually agree with you a little that the game has some appeal, but funny thing is, all I've heard about WoW is "Go play it for yourself and see" or things like "It's got over 8 Million people playing it!" as if that's going to be enough to bring me to play it again, apparently scions of fate has over 70 million players on it, ohh that sounds a lot more tempting than just 8 million, go back to your game and just play it instead of attacking everyone everywhere. I was told that I should get out of the world of warcraft forums here on MMORPG.COM but what do I find? WoW trolls everywhere, just bugger off, play your game and let us make our own decisions for ourselves and you yours, I personally do not want to meet people like you anywhere internet or no.

Hey Thillian.
I think your post is really interesting in that i value your points and agree in part with WoW's simplification of the genre to a certain degree perhaps.
For example there were MMORPG games around at the time that included all of the below features that WoW did not ever intend to include and because of its Massive success it could be said that it indirectly simplified the genre in some ways...
Player Housing Availability, Complex crafting and economic mechanics, Individual Player Shops / Vendors, Multi Tiered Skill trees (as opposed to level based advancement), Weather Effects (Added to WoW now), Low Technology Engine to increase its approachability to a mass of gamers varied hardware as opposed to High Tech Engines that struggled on 2002/2003 hardware etc. (Everquest 2 for example), Player Veichles.
However there is another slant to this view perhaps and i truly believe that, that is WoW also raised the Bar and benchmarked the industry and genre in other ways for your average gamer.
Solid Release Code, Polished first time play experience in an MMO, Approachability and Applicability of what before was a very niche genre of gaming, Fulfillment of design intentions (They set out to achieve however basic in content a strict design plan and what they delivered was a solid game).
I am not disagreeing with you, i thought your post was really interesting on that particular subject and you made really valid points. Its just my opinion that for all WoW might have with its success brought the genre "back to basics" its success can also be contributed to the fact that in other ways it raised the bar for the industry and gamers in terms of a polished solid product. A somewhat double edged sword if you like.
Upon conception Blizzard decided with WoW to look at the MMORPG market and take the things that WORKED and combine them into a game. Very little to nothing can be said to have been innovative about WoW, it was simply an act of observation and implementation. So when you say something is a WoW clone, you are saying the people making it are not completely retarded.
This is my rant, that is all.
Dunno if someone said posted this before (not going to read 8 pages kthx):
Perhaps people mean that "Ok nothing new in this game, been playing WoW for X-amount of time and this is just like it ... only worse/better and it sn't/is worth playing."
I like WoW. I just wish LOTRO would have copied more stuff ( but not all ) from WoW so I could actually like it.
You know what? I think it's obvious you are reading into this thread what you want and it's building up some sort of anger in you. Read the thread title - "What it means to be a WoW clone...". We are all just expressing our opinions in a thread that actually means just that. You have the option to not click on a thread if you don't like the subject. I also do not like trolls. A troll can be one who out of context blabs their opinions/flames/whatever in a topic that is completely different than where it should be posted. This is exactly where these posts should be. Also I have read nowhere in this thread anyone saying stupid reasonings such as "Go play it for yourself and see" "It's got over 8 Million people playing it!"
I am a huge LOTR fan, I wanted nothing more than this MMO to be exactly what I wanted. But ultimately what I found is a game VERY similar to WoW. If I had never played WoW, or LOTRO came out first, LOTRO would be my MMO. I just can't see anyone leaving WoW to play this game, unless they are totally inspired by the LOTR story line, which I also have a hard time perceiving here, other than names like "Underhill" or "Took" and the fact that you can play as a hobbit...
But again, to each his own. Play it if you like it. I am still in beta and still plan to play at release and hopefully I will find that this game has some playability over WoW. Discovering new worlds is always fun, even if it's very linear.
Oh did i mention to advance in crafting for lord of rings you need to do advanced craft quest in order to advance in your crafting idea is again from wow. By the way, the only thing they didnt rip was character traits. Map function where you can label and pinpoint each location on your map that idea appeared in wow first.
Are you saying WoW invented all the gameplay concepts and mechanics you've mentioned in the thread? I.E. You would NEVER have seen these things before WoW?
eq2 doesnt have rested exp when i played it at launch. Unless they copy the rested exp concept from wow.
Wrong again mate. EQ2 always had resting XP (or vitaliity as they call it) from launch to now. Only difference is they took a few months to make it black and white to players. Guess you didn't read the posts closely enough.
I just can't see anyone leaving WoW to play this game,
After playing Wow for 2 years, this alone is one of the biggest charms of LOTRO for me never see that community again! (Kudos to the mature minority in wow !)

Rofl you read much ?? tolken stole from pleanty , i know i read too much. So many good books out there yet people worship such a scant few.
But the argument sof LotRO has nothing to do with IP and all to do with the fact that it will play like a sluggish Wow game where i do everthing and almost nothign else than i did in WOW...

ok in my opinion whether or lotro ripped off concepts from wow or not really doesn't matter i believe being in closed beta of lotro i was getting a quality product....game runs pretty darn smooth with minimal of lag. as far as clone game and i am really not trying to get flamed here but wow took a lot of eq1 concepts flipped them and made them better....so hence moral of the story is everyone including wow have some sort of u.o. or eq1 dna just my thoughts. does it mean wow is a bad game or lotro is a bad game i say no pretty much the same deal but i like lotro community alot better
Not sure what everyone's point is here, since the wholde discussion is pretty pointless, but WOW had 0/ZERO/NO innovation. The whole concept behind WOW was copy the fun and easy stuff from all other MMOs and bring it together in one game. Everyone that wasn't new to the MMO scene at the time knew this going in. Blizzard did a good job copying everyone else, and they did a good job sifting through the crap that other games did to irritate people. It's MMO candy, and people ate it up. All these features are part of the MMO and RPG community. They're standard tools that all games pick and choose from. Saying any game copies another, just means they have a similar toolset. So, again, I'm not sure what the point of all this is... games copy most of their material and mix and match pre-existing tools. Each new game puts a very small spin on things and sometimes adds a new idea, but very few ever add anything huge. These games cost a LOT of money to develop. How many of you would fund a project that was full of unproven concepts? WOW is a collection of copies, so get off your slightly retarded high horse and stop giving the damn game more credit than it's due. I like WoW and have played it since open beta, but I'd never credit it with any kind of ingenuity. Pointless.
Wow had the most important inovation ever.... make all those old ideas work and apeal to new players....
BEST innovation ever and they were rewarded for it.
I do not like WoW but I remove myself from much of my bias before i open my mouth.
The superiority is not about the newest or bestest (i know) , they are about who sells more , who produces more and why.
WoW produced becuase it used many ideas that existed before but made them attractive to the masses... that means a great deal many find the game to be great. An expert may say it lacks many important quilities and it may, thus its not the best or perfect game, but for the majority it is what they want and this is all that counts.
As for me in my eyes LotRO just replicated much of this from WoW but did a poorer job at it.... Ill wait for WAR becuase level is differnt questign is different, 16 different classes from the start, and pvp is certre. Those are what to me makes a new game worth playing, REAL NEW content. Also AOC's combat system is somethign that is very interesting to me, but that does not trump WAR's content for me.

To me tolkien didn't steal from anyone. Stealing in the writing world is called plagery. He was inspired by what came before he wrote his books. He took parts of the other stories and mythos that came before him and put a new twist on them and made them unique to the world of middle earth. That is not stealing. Besides all great writings at some point draw inspiration from something they read or have done in their life.
No MMO has stolen from another MMO. They draw inspiration from what works in other MMO's and they put their owne twist on it. WOW is the prime example of this. If it was blatant outright stealing then WOW would of never made money cause they would of been sued by all of the games that had similar game mechanics in them. It doesn't matter to me that you can find things that are similar in a game to a previous game. As long as i enjoy playing the game and am willing to pay to do so that is all that matters to me.
Blizzard has always been known to polish a genre. That's what they do. They decide on a genre, look at all the best games that fall into that genre, and then take all the good features from those games and wrap them up in their own game with using ongoing theme. That's it. That's what they do, and the do a really good job.
Another thing that they do is cause a turning point in genres. Since they've polished the standard game-play elements so well, it's not very easy to compete. It's very rare to see another game company compete with them and win. With that said, the only way to compete with them and win, is to add a whole bunch of new features and innovation to the genre. Unfortunately, that's not such an easy task. While some new features will be incredible, others will not, and that's how Blizzard capitalizes on the whole situation. There will be a slew games with some great new ideas, and Blizzard will take all those ideas and wrap them up in yet another game.
That's just the way they run their business... and they're GOOD at it.
At this point, to compete with Blizzard in the mmo market, you'll need to offer a lot of new things. Game-play features that no other mmo currently has. And you have to make it work.
Games in this genre that have a chance to compete will have:

But the argument sof LotRO has nothing to do with IP and all to do with the fact that it will play like a sluggish Wow game where i do everthing and almost nothign else than i did in WOW...

- action oriented combat
- players can change the world around them
- a single-player experience in an mmo
- large outdoor battles
- more skill, less stats
and the list goes on.
