In stead of thinking about politics and other crap he should focuss on staying alive. You have fun in your safe ivory tower and have fun judging people you don't know.
Perhaps he shouldn't believe the propaganda, but on the other hand, if it keeps him sane, then why not.
I hope he's going to a quiet area and has the chance to make a minor difference for some iraqis, but I'd rather see him come back in one piece, without post traumatic stress disorder.
Then later on he can think about the "why".

Why am I stoked? It's not because I think it's cool, it's not because I'm young, it's because you got two options: You can think of it as a soldier or you can think of it as a civilian.
I'm fucking terrified as a civilian, but I'm excited as hell as a soldier. I focus on the soldier part because it's better for you. That's not being an idiot, that's what some of you older guys would call "Gung Ho". Everyone's afraid. I know people who were literally minutes from being vaporized by car bombs. One guy was doing a checkpoint for 12hrs and when he was replaced and going home, he was 1mile away when his exact spot got hit by a carbomb and his replacement was vaporized because he was standing right next to the car when it went off. Checkpoints are between two 15-20ft concrete barriers and it only fits two cars. The other car in the barrier was launched half a mile away... what was left of it anyway.
So, yeah. I'm scared. By to focus on the bad part is just stupid. You have to focus on the part of being a soldier.
But, of course I'm not really scared of death per say. I'm afraid of coming back missing something or seeing one of my friends get hurt. I don't understand the fear of death tbh, everything dies... the act of dieing though is another thing. I don't like pain. lol.
You also need to remember that it's not as bad as news makes it out to be. The News is a TV Show like Seinfeld, they give people what they want to see. Good things are not entertaining. Ppl dieing and explosions are.

I would suggest turning off your TV and walking out from under the shelter you live under called the US.
The world is nothing like what it is in the US. People are afraid to realize that, but it's true.
And as far as body armor goes, ours is top of the line of there. At first the armor was sub par, but now it's very good. I know alot of people who have bit shot and hit by IEDs who walked away unscaved.
But like I said, turn off your TV and go learn what the world is really like.

I don't think I'd ever want to be a soldier. The fact of death doesn't sway me, it's the other war effects. Loosing eyesight from being too close to a gernade, limbs flying off, paralyzed, loosing hearing from gunshots. I guess it's because I'm a musician. Imagine being drafted and then serving my 3 years, coming back blind and deff. I wouldn't have a job. And then you have the messed up life afterwords from the extreme training and watching all your friends and soldiers in your division die. I can't imagine having war flashbacks...
I love how liberals can go around talking about supporting the troops, then as soon as one says that he's about to be shipped to Iraq they take it as a chance to talk about how much they hate the war, and how foolish people are who want to serve the country. I completely agree with saying that there are some people who abuse Snakeys deployment to get a point known to the world. And yes, it's sad. But I don't see how they're liberals. Fascists and communists have both used total governmental control. Does that make fascists communists and vice versa? I don't think so.

I don't own a TV...never have.I spent 10 years in the US Air Force and have lived, either TDY or semi-permanent, in 7 foreign countries. I don't need any "advice" from you youngster. Now blow!
